Curious Article In City Ads

I noticed a curious article in the City Ads today (I’m well aware of it’s real name being City News…but it is an advertorial-a-thon). It was regarding so called “exit interviews” where an employee who leaves a business can be interviewed by a third party to find out what problems may exist in the business they have left.

Naturally, as with all the paid articles in City Ads it contained a final paragraph with company contact details, but the reason I find this interesting is that a former City Ads employee once told me about the reasons City Ads have a high staff turnover, including an advertisers over staff mentatilty in management.

This prompts an interesting question, with such a high turnover, do City Ads use “exit Interviews”, and if so, did they get a reduction in fees for running this advertorial?

For those who are interested, it is on page 12 in the top right of the page and mirrored below for future reference.

The Importance Of Exit Interviews
Why is it that so many strong organisations continue to lose excellent employees? Organisations are facing unbudgeted expenses of hundreds of thousands of dollars by ignoring the costs involved in employee turnover.

But how can organisations discover the real problems causing high employee turnover? Simple as it sounds, the answer is to conduct an exit interview and record, analyse and action the information that’s revealed.

Exit interviews are structured discussions, preferably conducted by a third party, designed to uncover what is happening in organisation of which management is often unaware.

The information unearthed in an exit interview – if conducted correctly – can be used to improve employee retention/reduce employee turnover, with both immediate and long-term positive effects for the company.

Drake Canberra is holding a “Keeping the Best” business lunch from 12pm-2pm on Friday, October 14th at the Crowne Plaza, Binara Street. The briefing is tailored especially for business and government, line and HR managers with employment and employee retention responsibility. Delegates will learn why people stay, why they go and how you can keep your good people through the implementation of practical retention tactics including exit interviews and regular employee surveys.

The presenter, Stephanie Dinnell is Drake International’s Employee Retention Specialist who is speaking around Australia on this topic. She is an engaging presenter and is renowned for her informative and interactive sessions.

Samuel’s Musicians Of The Week

This week the award goes to The Eagles, and the feature song is Hotel California.

On a dark desert highway
Cool wind in my hair
Warm smell of colitas
Rising up through the air
Up ahead in the distance
I saw a shimmering light
My head grew heavy, and my sight grew dim
I had to stop for the night
There she stood in the doorway
I heard the mission bell
And I was thinking to myself
This could be Heaven or this could be Hell
Then she lit up a candle
And she showed me the way
There were voices down the corridor
I thought I heard them say

Welcome to the Hotel California
Such a lovely place
Such a lovely place (background)
Such a lovely face
Plenty of room at the Hotel California
Any time of year
Any time of year (background)
You can find it here
You can find it here

Her mind is Tiffany twisted
She’s got the Mercedes bends
She’s got a lot of pretty, pretty boys
That she calls friends
How they dance in the courtyard
Sweet summer sweat
Some dance to remember
Some dance to forget
So I called up the Captain
Please bring me my wine
He said
We haven’t had that spirit here since 1969
And still those voices are calling from far away
Wake you up in the middle of the night
Just to hear them say

Welcome to the Hotel California
Such a lovely Place
Such a lovely Place (background)
Such a lovely face
They’re livin’ it up at the Hotel California
What a nice surprise
What a nice surprise (background)
Bring your alibies

Mirrors on the ceiling
Pink champagne on ice
And she said
We are all just prisoners here
Of our own device
And in the master’s chambers
They gathered for the feast
They stab it with their steely knives
But they just can’t kill the beast
Last thing I remember
I was running for the door
I had to find the passage back to the place I was before
Relax said the nightman
We are programed to recieve
You can check out any time you like
But you can never leave
