You may recall that, three months ago, I was quite excited that 2GB’s Jason Morrison had agreed to come on to the 2QN breakfast show, on which I was filling in for Paul Dix, to have a chat about some of the stories which had made the news that week.
On the Friday morning, just after the 8:30am news, Jason and I discussed Annice Smoel’s release from a Thai jail which was undoubtedly the top story of the week, along with petrol prices and the discounting stunts taking place in Sydney, plus an amusing case of a large bank error and record bank fees.
I was quite pleased with how it turned out, as was the senior announcer at 2QN, and now that it is more than three months old, here it is for your listening pleasure.

In case you are wondering, it was not a coincidence that Jason’s theme song from 2GB played straight after the interview. It’s a great song, I’d been wanting to play it all week, and the segment gave me the perfect opportunity to play it, even if I didn’t mention that as a reason at the time.
So, once again I would like to thank Jason for giving up fifteen minutes of his time on that morning. I understand that it was a particularly busy week for him, so his contribution is greatly appreciated.

Incidentally, my childhood recordings continue to be published tomorrow…one tomorrow, one on Tuesday.

Ain’t migraines wonderful…you have half a dozen things planned for the day, and you get none of them done. It’s wonderful!
Anyway, without an ado or anything else getting in the way, this aircheck comes from the afternoon of the 6th of April, when news of the Abruzzo earthquake was just starting to filter through.

Incidentally, this Saturday marks the day on which I can release a particular aircheck under the three month rule, so there will be an out of cycle Aircheck Sunday on Saturday.

This week we have another 2QN aircheck. We will have a non-2QN aircheck when we next have an Aircheck Sunday in two weeks.
This week’s aircheck excitement is the 12:08pm 2QN Regional News bulletin from the 13th of March 2009.

Unfortunately due to the nature of the logging system, 2QN’s sister station, Classic Rock, can be faintly heard in the background of this recording.
Enjoy!

As noted yesterday, Aircheck Sunday is back on an alternating week basis, with my childhood recordings taking up the other week.
This week we have the 7:30am 2QN Regional News bulletin from the 31st of December 2008.

By request, I’m breaking with my usual “three month” policy for Aircheck Sunday whereby posted airchecks are at least three months old, and posting an aircheck of 2QN Breakfast from Wednesday. Enjoy!

Or “voicetrack” as we say in the industry.
It’s the 1WAY FM breakfast show from the 5th of January, 2009, and due to the death of a car, and the subsequent need to have it towed, I was unable to be in the 1WAY FM building during the breakfast show. I needed to be in Weston to be present for the towing of the car…although as it happened, the tow truck didn’t turn up until about 9:30 so I probably could have done the show live.
Tim, the station manager, was out of the country at the time and graciously allowed me to borrow his car, so I was able to present The Best of Open House the preceding night without any hassle, and as such I recorded the breakfast show after that at about 10pm. Unfortunately due to the way the automation system Startrax works, it was not possible to work out the exact time that the broadcast would go to air, however I made sure that my two hours would time out, and left enough spare time for the weather.
The weather segments were recorded a couple hours before the broadcast went to air so that they would contain up-to-date forecasts. From memory I had to pre-record weather for later in the day as well. Coming in early in that morning was useful for another reason too…I was able to make the 6am hour timeout properly (end at 7am rather than, for example, 7:03am) which was essential for making the breakfast show work properly.
It’s also worthwhile noting that the aircheck system at 1WAY FM doesn’t always record the audio in the few seconds around the top of the hour correctly…this is noticeable around the 8am mark in this aircheck. I also don’t have the last few seconds of the broadcast.
Listening to the aircheck I have spotted a trademark Startrax error (see if you can spot it), along with a “Samuel forgot to put the post-news weather in to the 8am hour playlist” error.
Enjoy!

I think Aircheck Sunday has had a long enough break…time to bring back some sort of Sunday feature, be it this or something else in a rotation.
This is the 12:08pm 2QN Regional News bulletin from the 17th of December 2008.

This week we’re heading back to the night of October 18 for 1WAY FM’s ACT Election updates. I was joined on the night by station manager Tim Malone who spent some of the night in the tally room, and by Kenneth Webb who was providing a bit more depth to the story behind the numbers. I also chatted with Kingsley Bruce, host of the Saturday night show “All That Jazz and Blues” a few times during the night, as the election updates were occurring during his show.
The coverage was going to start at 7pm, however when it became apparent shortly after 6pm that the electronically lodged votes were being counted by the electoral commission’s computers quite rapidly, we decided to start the coverage early.
You’re going to need a while for this one if you intend on listening to the whole thing. It might as well be an episode of Samuel’s Persiflage as it runs for an hour and twenty minutes.

This week we’re heading back to October the sixth, Labour Day in Canberra, when I filled in for James Scott on the 1WAY FM breakfast show, and this is probably a good example of “if it can go wrong…”.
Overall I was happy with this, as I had a fair bit of fun despite the various technical issues. It was clear that the day was not going to go so well when I couldn’t get in to the building, and then at 7am the news played at half speed (a bulletin which I aborted, and produced my own news headlines instead), effectively causing me to rearrange my half-written running sheet for the morning.
There were a couple points where, if I had remembered to load a sting or two before going to air, the show would have been a bit tighter…one or two occasions where saying nothing would have been better than rambling, oh, and the 8am news intro didn’t play…at least the bulletin did. I was skeptical of whether or not that bulletin would work after the 7am failure so I made sure that hour timed out so that we could use the satellite feed if the computer system went mad again.
As I said, overall I’m happy with it, and I think I’ve learnt a few things from it.

Something new for a Sunday on Samuel’s Blog, it’s Aircheck Sunday. Basically the idea is that I put various bits of my recent on-air activities online for your enjoyment/amusement/critique/ignoring. I’m going back to September for this one as I have a bit of audio to upload from the last couple of months and that should keep us busy for the next few weeks. Whether this feature continues on a weekly or irregular basis after that is a decision that I will have to make at the time.
At this, rather early stage, it’s quite possible that I might put it on a fortnightly basis, with a new series of Samuel In Dolgnwot filling the gaps. Just a thought.
Anyway, back to the afternoon of Sunday, the 7th of September, and the half hourly sport updates from 2pm onwards. Although technically the news service ceases at 5pm on weekends, we generally run with a 5:30 update for SA/NT network stations to use during the 5pm news in their timezone and for the other states to run with the 6pm bulletin if they so-desire. As it happened on this particular day, the AFL just took a bit longer to finish than expected, and we went with a 6pm update as well.
Enjoy!
