Samuel’s Persiflage Update

Those of you who keep track of this kind of thing would know that we have just passed the middle of the month, and it is about the right time for another episode of Samuel’s Persiflage.

It’s coming, probably early next week, just need to get the interviews out of the way, then I can do all the post production work. Unfortunately I made a mess of scheduling one interview, all these timezones can be a pain in the nexk, especially when trying to calculate what some future time on another day is over on the other side of the world. Hopefully that interview will be appropriately rescheduled in the next couple of days.

On another topic, we seem to have a bit of a multimedia feedback section this month, with a few people sending in remixes of the original intro music, as well as one original song about this blog. If you would like to slip some feedback in you can do so by emailing podcast@samuelgordonstewart.com

Dream of Electrocution

I had a very odd dream the other night which took place in the foyer of my high school, which is extremely odd considering that the last time I was in that foyer was when I was paying them a visit in late 2004.

Anyway, in the dream I was standing in the foyer when a fire alarm started in the distance, I walked over to the fire alarm control panel where a light was slowly beginning to glow, the light got brighter and was accompanied by an electric hum which got louder and louder until there was a large bang and a bright white flash, which was accompanied by a feeling of electrocution.

The lights were out and the fire alarm was now beeping away loudly, meanwhile I was was unable to move my left leg which felt numb and looked burnt. I dragged myself into the principal’s office via the dorr next to the fire alarm control panel, and saw the postman delivering the mail to the front office.

These dreams seem to be getting stranger and more abstract.

Samuel’s Musician Of The Week

This week’s award goes to Burl Ives, well known for singing songs such as “On Top Of Old Smokey”, “The Little White Duck”, “Mule Train” and a stirring rendition of Bob Dylan’s “The Times They Are A-Changin'”, however I have chosen his rendition of “By The Time I Get To Phoenix” as the feature song.

By the time I get to Phoenix she’ll be rising
She’ll find the note I left hangin’ on her door
She’ll laugh when she reads the part that says I’m leavin’
‘Cause I’ve left that girl so many times before

By the time I make Albuquerque she’ll be working
She’ll prob’ly stop at lunch and give me a call
But she’ll just hear that phone keep on ringin’
Off the wall…that’s all

By the time I make Oklahoma she’ll be sleepin’
She’ll turn softly and call my name out loud
And she’ll cry just to think that I’d really leave her
Tho’ time and time I’ve tried to tell her so
She just didn’t know…I would really go.

The 2CC Bunnings Broadcast (and most of my afternoon)

It was about 12:30 when I finished lunch and caught a 116 bus (an orange one) to Belconnen, having forgotten my headphones I carried out my backup radio listening plan of turning the volume right down, putting the speaker to my ear and turning it up just enough for me to hear it clearly, at this volume it is impossible to hear the radio any further than 10cm from the speaker.

This early bus trip meant that I was well ahead of schedule, so I decided to have a coffee, but on my way across the bridge from the Belconnen bus interchange to the shopping centre I noticed this fantastic view down Benjamin Way, the road I would later walk down.
Benjamin Way

I went in to Westfield Belconnen and went to Cafe Mochalat (oddly enough, this cafe was the focus of a discussion I had been a part of earlier in the day where nobody could remember the name) where I had a flat white and a jam tart. I then visited an ATM and its associated queue as I realised I had almost run out of money, not that I spend much, but you never know when you might need it.

At 1PM (well, a tad after, Kris was already into the news) I left Westfield and made the journey down Benjamin Way. Near the end of the road to my right were the Belconnen Fresh Food Markets and beyond that Bunnings Belconnen, I wasn’t sure if the carpark was open at both ends though, so I opted to walk the long way around, onto Belconnen Way and then into Bunnings. I’m glad I did as it provided me with some very nice views.

Firstly Bunnings from near the corner of Benjamin Way and Belconnen Way
Bunnings Belconnen in the distance

Then Bunnings from near the traffic lights shown in the previous picture.
Bunnings Belconnen Carpark Entrance

Followed by the grass around Bunnings and its carpark, which was provided by Canturf (a Canberra grass business), hopefully they got a discount for showing the Canturf signs, of which the photographed one had fallen over.
Bunnings Belconnen Lawn

Next up an overview of the Canturf lawn, the carpark and the Bunnings Belconnen store itself.
Bunnings Belconnen

All Bunnings stores seem to have the same exterior, including the slogan “Lowest Prices Are Just The Beginning…”
Lowest Prices Are Just The Beginning...

Yet another angle, the radio of the pictured ute was tuned to 2CC and was clearly audible, when I heard it I checked to see if it was a 2CC staff member, which it wasn’t.
Bunnings Belconnen and a 2CC listener's ute

I started to have a look around Bunnings, and ran into some people I know, who were doing some shopping, they were very impressed with the new store, I accompanied them on their shopping adventure, before going with them to a coffee shop in the Belconnen Fresh Food Markets.

After this they left with their purchases and I returned the trolley to Bunnings and resumed my tour, I had finished all of two aisles when I spotted movement at the 2CC stand in the form of Mike Frame and 2CC office manager (whoops, sorry, I’m bad with names sometimes). I went over to say hello, and before long was embarking on a store tour with Framey…this was 2:30. Framey and I had a bit of a chat, mostly about the new Bunnings store, but also about lawn bowls and what we’d been up to lately. Whilst we were in the garden section we spotted some bonzai, which is when Framey came up with his catchcry for the day that “everything’s big at Bunnings except the bonzai”.
Little Bunnings Bonzai

Between then and 2:55 I acted as “Mike Frame’s Shadow” and there were many chats with many people, including a Bunnings staff member who had never heard of 2CC before, and correctly guessed that John Laws was on there…well, more or less, I think Lawsie’s name just flew off his tongue at the mention of talk radio. A few familiar faces turned up including Kevin Woolfe (Aka “The Wolfman” or “Woolfie”) and 2CC’s manager, David Leitch, who seemed to have a smile on his face all day.

Sometime around 2:55 Framey sent me off to get him a can of Coke, which I did and returned during the news, just in time to take two photos of the 2CC Bunnings balloons, and to get a video of Framey’s first moment on air (the voice before the voice over is that of newsreader Kris McKenzie).

(Note about videos, my camera is terribly inefficient when it comes to video bit rates, needlessly enocoding at almost double the required bitrate (maybe it saves on processing power). I have re-encoded the video in a number of formats with minimal to no quality loss. In all cases, the MPEG 4 video is the smallest, followed by the quicktime video, followed by the Real Media, followed by the Windows Media. In all cases, the MPEG4 is the best quality, followed by Quicktime, Windows Media and Real Media.)

A shortwhile thereafter they had their first OB guest, Bruce Huskings, complex manager of Bunnings Belconnen (I only remember his name because I wrote it down). In this photo from left to right, Bruce from Bunnings, Mike Frame and Kevin Woolfe.

There is also a short video of this interview where Bruce and Mike are alking about some of Bunnings Belconnen’s Grand Opening activities (Humphrey gets a mention). Note that this is before they fixed the PA so that the speakers emit the sounds from the microphones.

The lights in the background were turned on prior to the beginning of the broadcast, which had me wondering if they were to a reverse television thing where, instead of having stage lights pointing at their faces (and everything else), they lit up their backs…I think too much, I must have gone potty from all the pots in the garden area (third time I’ve used that joke in the last 24 hours, I will desist now).

Here we have a random video clip of Mike summarising some of the guests who would be on the show later in the day…and the PA works.

The “coming off delay” seven seconds of silence prior to the 3:30 news gave everyone a fright, thankfully Gareth The Tech had dropped by and was able to reassure everyone that it was normal. Recent commenter T-Bone also dropped by.

I decided to take a couple photos of the store, firstly looking lengthways down Bunnings from near one end of the store.
Bunnings Belconnen

And one looking in a direction at right angles to the last photo (it doesn’t give a proper perspective of the size due to a zoom accident).
Bunnings Belconnen

Then we have the video which I think is the best one of the lot, and I am very proud of it. I successfully guessed the final ad in the ad break, and pressed record right at the start of the intro, I then zoomed in one Mike as remained zoomed in on him as he spoke. A passing trolley moving stock can be heard at one stage, and the camera did its “overly cautious about having enough battery power to save the video trick” and cut the video off about two seconds early, but I still think this is the best video of the lot.

During the ad break aroud 3:45 I decided to make my way home, and said goodbye to those who were still there (and waved to those deep in conversation), once out of the store I turned my radio back on, and started walking back to the Belconnen bus interchange. On my way, I took this photo of Bunnings Belconnen (and the Belconnen Fresh Food Markets’ carpark).
Bunnings Belconnen

It was around 4PM when I got back to the bus interchange, I soon discovered that the next scheduled orange bus would arrive at 4:30 or thereabouts, as I had some time on my hands I decided to avoid the green buses and wait for an orange one. Around 4:15 I gave Mike Frame a call, in which I jokingly informed him that it’s a good thing that David Young (2CC’s gardener) is in Africa and not in the garden section at Bunnings, because he will come back from Africa.

Some time close to 5PM I reached home and only heard a few more minutes of the OB, John B1_B5 informs us that there was a “music break” at one stage when the OB signal was lost, I can only assume that this was some time after the 5:05 “by the seat of their pants” appearance of the clown and the man on stilts, as I didn’t hear any break in transmission before then.

Anyway, well done to 2CC for the outside broadcast, and well done to Bunnings for their brand new Belconnen store, it is absolutely fantastic and I recomend that you take a look if you have some spare time or some hardware needs in or around the ACT. Mike Frame was right when he said that you could spend half a day walking around that place, there is just so much to see.

Cafe Review: Coffee @ Helen’s

It has been my view for some time now that I am long overdue for a cafe review, and there is a cafe I have been meaning to review for some time, so here for your reading pleasure is my review of “Coffee @ Helen’s”.

Coffee @ Helen’s is a cafe which could be described as being in the Civic Bus Interchange, between the newsagent and the entrance to Fernwood.

I first ventured into Coffee @ Helen’s when my Friday meetings with my bus driver friend were a common occurence and I needed somewhere to have lunch between the time I arrived in Civic and the time my bus driver friend arrived. Being a small store at a bus interchange I didn’t expect much, so I was very pleasantly surprised by the friendly staff, the lovely coffee and the excellent pies, sausage rolls, quiches (we all know I like a good quiche), sandwiches and more. I was so pleased that I kept coming back each and every Friday, and then at other times when I was around the area.

During various visits, I have had a few different lunches at Coffee @ Helen’s, and I can thoroughly recommend the various quiches, which are solid but mildly fluffy, with a cheese that has just enough flavour and bite to leave an impression without overpowering the rest of the quiche. The pies are also excellent, as are the sausage rolls, but if you are in the mood for a toasted or otherwise sandwich, then this is the place to go. Prepared right in front of you, with either a preset blackboard filling or one of your own choosing, the sandwiches just don’t come much better than what you will find at Coffee @ Helen’s, it could easily be described as “heaven on bread”!

The coffee is (as the name would imply) something else which they specialise in. One thing I have noticed about many cafes and restaurants is that the quality of the coffee depends to a large degree on the person who makes it…this is not the case with Coffee @ Helen’s. I don’t know how they manage it, but every coffee made there, regardless of the person who makes it, is just perfect, admittedly some staff are more creative with froth than others, but that is neither here nor there. The coffee is fantastic here, and I would recommend it to everyone.

Another thing which, whilst not part of the edible or drinkable experience, adds to each visit, is the friendliness of the staff, who always seem to be happy, smiling, and willing to have a chat. During a quiet time you may end up having a conversation for nearly the entire duration of your visit (if you want to), which is not only good for staff morale, but also for customer morale. It is very nice to leave any cafe leaving both refreshed and uplifted, and this is, in my experience, what happens whenever I visit Coffee @ Helens.

My Morning and CIT

Thanks to an interesting schedule change I can conveniently split today into two posts, one for the morning and one for the afternoon.

This morning started at 6:30 for me, as this was the time when my alarm went off. Having gone to bed nice and early I was happily refrshed and ready to wake up, so I got up and had breakfast. I wasn’t in any particular hurry at this stage so I spent a bit more time than usual enjoying my breakfast.

It was around 7:15 when I checked my emails and got iTunes to download the latest episode of Security Now! before going to clean my teeth and make my bed, I then took Nattie for a walk, shut down the computer and made sure I had what I needed for CIT and the rest of the day. (For those of you wondering, this morning’s post “What’s in store today” was written last night before “Thursday!” and scheduled for 7:27).

At 8:40 I left home for CIT, admittedly this was early but it provided me with the “just in case I get lost” buffer time which is important for new buildings. Last year I was 30 minutes early for a job interview so I did a bit of “sightseeing” (aka walking around the block, and the next block a couple times) before arriving five minutes early.)

I arrived at CIT at 8:50, which was half way through the weekly soap opera report, I decided that I should go inside anyway and find the room. The room turned out to be a lecture theatre with a lot of people waiting around in the foyer, closer to 9am I met someone I know and the door to the room was unlocked and the lecture began. The lecture was titled “Preparing for work in your chosen profession” although it should really have been titled “An introduction to studying at CIT in your chosen faculty”. Schedules were handed out and various things were discussed, and the morning tea break came ten minutes early at 10:20, so this friend of mine, a friend of his and I went to Cafe Yala (the cafe I mentioned in a previous article that I can’t find at this time).

The schedule said that the second block of the class would start at “10:45ish” and end at “11:30ish”, the law of averages being what it is, this was anything but true. Friend, friend of friend and I returned to the class at 11:45 only to find everyone already inside and seated, we made our way in and decided silently that it would be better to stand up the back than interrupt proceedings by climbing over people in order to get a seat, however the lecturer, being mildly witty and possibly seeing our reason for making this decision decided to interrupt the class herself to enquire about our comfort up the back against the wall.

We stayed in this position until 11:25 when the group split into two differently sized sections based on course choice for the “11:15ish” guest speakers. It was 11:40 or so when the guest speaker ended and the ambiguous section of the schedule began, according to the lecturer we were “free”, according to the schedule we were on an “optional self-guided tour of the campus” which would be followed at midday by a “barbecue in front of Cafe Yala” (there was no mention of optional, but it was treated as optional.) Having already made my plans for lunch I headed off.

It remains a mystery to this moment what the second half of the schedule page was for. This had five groups which went to five parts of the campus in sequence, each group in a different place at any given time.

Upon leaving the building, I pulled the radio out of my bag and turned it on, I soon discovered that the ad break in the middle of “Best Of Laws” was playing, I listened to Best Of Laws until just before midday, which is when I arrived at my destination for lunch.

What’s in store today

I’m going to make this post very very brief as I have a lot to do today and need to get started shortly.

Today will contain my first CIT class, which is scheduled from 9am-2pm (hopefully including some breaks). After this I will be heading to Bunnings Belconnen’s grand opening where Mike Frame will be running a 2CC outside broadcast.

Mike will be on-air from 3pm-6pm Canberra time (GMT+11) so why don’t you give him a call and say g’day. Of course it would help if you have something to contribute to the program, perhaps you have a view on a news issue that you would like to express. Give Mike a call on 62554444. Mike quite correctly states that he has “an open line and an open mind”, so I’m sure he would love to hear what it is that you have to say.

I will (hopefully) post a review of my day this evening, it should be quite a day.

Thursday!

Today was a pretty busy day for me. To start with I have found my sleep pattern to be in another timezone of late, and have been mildly unsuccessful in fixing it (I think I made it worse actually), so I have taken the step of completely killing it so that I can start over. This means that I did not sleep last night, instead I satyed up the whole night keeping myself busy with various tasks.

Naturally I had breakfast and took Nattie for a walk, which was followed by a bit of printing and paper finding, followed by morning tea and then a busy morning.

I had to go to CIT to get my student ID (which they refer to as a “CITCard” for one branding reason or another), this was a fairly painfree process which involved showing a receipt for my course fees and some ID, they then got me to sit in front of a video camera (good idea as people can see what the photo will look like and shouldn’t need to complain), used a single frame as the photo, printed the card, got me to sign it and sent me on my way.

After this I went to the post office to post a few letters and then made my way through Civic where a mass practice evacuation of public servants was taking place…I can’t say that I’ve ever seen so many public servants in so many coffee shops at one time before, it was very amusing. I then caught the next bus to Dickson, my next destination, which had to detour around the closed road from the evacuations, naturally the evacuations ran overtime which seemed to please the now loitering and gleeful public servants who got over an hour off with pay.

I spent a little while in Dickson delivering bits of paper and other things, as well as catching up with a few people I haven’t seen since last year. I then went home and had lunch, and awaited a tradesman. I was tired and took a nap during this wait as other household members were about. The tradesman came and went, I took Nattie for a walk.

The rest of the day was taken fairly easily, and I will be heading to bed shortly, which should put my sleep pattern back in my timezone. Perhaps if I was a cow and only had to worry about being milked, I wouldn’t have such issues when daylight saving comes and goes and doesn’t.

I’m beginning to make no sense, so I’ll leave this here. Apoligies to those of you whose comments are still in moderation, I’m too tired to even think about looking at them right now, I’ll probably do so in the morning.

The Lion’s Letter

I had a most unusual dream last night, it took place in an African settlement which looked like a suburban park in a TV show, as the areas of the park seemed to be in sections, there was no apparent continuity in the landscape.

Anyway, in this settlement there was a lion which seemed to be dispised by many, I met the lion who was quite friendly, and took him over to the local letter writer (who was also a professor) where the lion dictated a letter explining to everyone that he is actually quite nice and doesn’t want to hurt anyone. I carried the letter and the lion let me ride on his back. We rode around for a while (including crossing a road which looked much like Ballumbir Street in Civic), and went to see the Prime Minister (yes, John Howard was in my dream). John Howard was having a meeting with some advisors when we turned up and handed him the letter, he read the letter and said he would have a chat with the letter writing professor. He seemed quite pleased with the lion, and then the dream ended.

More from the cabling

According to the UEA website, the process used for this digging is Horizontal Directional Drilling. According to a person I know who knows about these sort of things, the direction of the drilling is controlled by water pressure, which is why it all starts on an angle but ends up going horizontally.

Anyway, a photo and some video of the Horizontal Directional Drilling machine in action.

It’s a dog’s life!

Here are a couple photos I took yesterday of Nattie enjoying life. First up, we have her giving her teeth a good workout by chewing on a yummy bone.
Nattie chewing on a bone

And after all that hard work, time for a nap in the sun.
Nattie having a nap

Unlike previous days, yesterday was a good day for taking a nap in the sun, with the temperature only reaching 22.9 degrees celcius at 2:18pm, which is close to the time I took the photos.

Bunnings and the 2CC Outside Broadcast

As you may recall from this post (I have been referring to previous posts a fair bit recently), 2CC will be running an outside broadcast from the grand opening of Bunnings Belconnen. To my horror I have discovered that this Bunnings store will not feature a cafe and I will have to add “picking up coffee” to my schedule. Either that or taking coffee in a thermos.

My plan for the day is below, but right here I am reproducing the multi-page advertisement that Bunnings took out in The Chronicle (click to enlarge).

Bunnings Opening
Bunnings Opening
Bunnings Opening
Bunnings Opening

Yes, that’s right, Australia’s favourite children’s entertainer (although you don’t have to be a child to enjoy his show), Humphrey B. Bear will be there to entertain all and sundry from 7pm-7:30pm. He will be performing a special show at that time, and I hoping that he will be walking around the store for a little while before that. He probably wouldn’t be great on the radio (he doesn’t speak out loud), but it would be nice to get a photo of him standing next to Mike Frame at the 2CC outside broadcast.

Anyway, Friday for me will involve leaving home at about 8:45am so that I can be slightly early to CIT, find the correct room (J028) and hopefully be there at the commencement time of 9am. As previously stated, this “Introduction to working in your chosen profession” class, assuming that it sticks to its name, will be one of the greatest pieces of irrelevant snoring material ever to be produced by an educational institution…I’ve already worked in my “chosen profession”, why do I need to have it explained to me for five hours?

My theory is, the earlier I get there, the earlier I can get out of there. With any luck there will be a break which includes 11:30am-Midday so that I can enjoy Best Of Laws in its broadcast form.

When the class ends at 2PM, what follows will depend on what happened during the CIT class. If there were no break (they may find me a bit agitated if that is the case), I will need to decide where to have lunch. However, as I suspect that there will be lunch and morning tea breaks, I will make my way to the Civic bus interchange and catch an intertown bus to Belconnen. With any luck, I will be able to catch a nice orange bus, and avoid a horrid green contraption. Due to the fact that I will be pressed for time, I will probably catch the first bus I see. It will probably be around 2:10 or 2:15 when I reach the Civic bus interchange.

One of the many problems with ACTION’s new green buses is the way they interfere with the AM signal, this generally means having to listen to 2CC over strange buzzing and whirring noises.

When I get to Belconnen (approx 2:30), I will enter Westfield Belconnen, walk to the food court, and visit one of the coffee shops I like out that way, pick up a take away coffee, walk out of the shopping centre, onto Benajmin Way and head off in the direction of Belconnen Way, and somehwere up there I will find Bunnings Belconnen. I suppose it will be close to 2:50 when I get there.

I intend on being there for anywhere from 30 minutes to an hour, after which I will probably head back to Westfield, have another coffee, and head home. Of course, taking coffee with me in a thermos might be a better idea, but I will make that decision on that morning.

Anyway, it should be a good day!

OK, which one of you has been trying to gain access to my email?

I noticed this rather unusual entry in the search keywords list for Wednesday February 1:

smoothwallsamuel@gmail.com password

At the time I didn’t think much of it, despite the fact that someone landed on my website three times by searching for it, however upon checking my hotmail account (I check it monthly, just to see if an old contact has sent me an email for some reason…I usually just find spam) today, I found the following email from Google:

This is a post-only mailing. Replies to this message are not monitored

My hotmail account is listed as my secondary account for Gmail, as it was the address which my Gmail invitation was sent to.

So what does all this mean? Basically it means that somebody wanted to gain access to my Gmail account, they foolishly thought that my password would be on a website somewhere, and then thought they would be able to change my password by clicking links on the Gmail website.

Just so you know, the webserver logs for that period of time, as well as the email from Google accounts, will be forwarded to Google’s abuse team. Whether they do anything about it is something I don’t know, but be warned, further attempts at gaining access to my email will result in law enforcement officers being brought in.

You have been warned!

Now back to normal blog operations.

Spam for the podcast email address

Sometimes I enjoy reading some of the spam I receive (On average, about one per hour). Gmail does a pretty good job of filtering it, in fact I’ve only had two spam emails slip into my inbox in the last couple months.

Anyway, this gem was filtered by Gmail today, addressed to the podcast email address (before you ask, all of my email addresses are directed to my gmail account, and placed under specific labels upon arrival).

Rowan Barker returns to work

As you may recall from this post a few weeks back, 2GB newsreader Rowan Barker was due to return to work today. I am pleased to be able to bring you the news that he did indeed return to work today, and settled in straight away.

Barker back at work today
As predicted by radioinfo on 27 January 2GB/2CH newsreader Rowan Barker returned to work today.

He was stabbed several times in early December during an altercation with two men outside a home in St. Ives.

It’s planned that he’ll ease himself back into it by working half days for the first couple of weeks – up to the end of Alan Jones and John Poole’s shows.

Erin Maher will then continue to fill for him through the weekday morning timeslot.

Macquarie Director News and Current Affairs Jason Morrison told radioinfo: “He started as normal at 5.30am and was brilliant and error-free – just like he’d only had a day off. After 6 he had a lengthy chat on the air with Alan Jones. It’s good to have him back.”

TV crews from all stations covered his return to the job plus a Daily Telegraph crew to greet him as well.

I heard a brief snippet of his work and an interview with him on Seven News this evening, and I must say that he is looking and sounding very well. It’s good to see him back at work after such a terrible and ruthless random attack.

Rowan, best of luck mate, it’s great to see you on your feet again.
