Congratulations John Stanley and wife Elissa

Congratulations to 2UE’s John Stanley and his wife Elissa, who are expecting their first child in about eight weeks.

I’m almost certain that John Stanley would now agree that new episodes of Here’s Humphrey are long overdue and it would be good if Banksia Productions sign with a new TV station (I haven’t written that article yet have I? Hmmm, hang on, I’ll do it now).

2UE Movements Of The Week

2UE just can’t make their mind up about their schedule…Glenn Wheeler has supposedly taken leave after working seven days a week almost every week since Stan Zemanek resigned. Stuart Bocking is filling in for him for the rest of this week…Clive Robertson is filling Stuart’s middawn shift.

Friday is a public holiday, and being a public holiday right next to the weekend, 2UE have decided to run their weekend schedule on Friday put George Moore and Paul B. Kidd on breakfast. John Kerr is in Tamworth judging the Country Music Awards, and I highly doubt he will be back for Friday morning, and 2UE being the place it is, I wouldn’t be surprised if Clive Robertson hosts New Day. George and Paul will be hosting the “breakfast” shift, which being a weekend runs from 6am-midday…the upshot of which is that network stations will get them filling in for John Laws.

Update 12:09pm 24/Jan/2007: OK…nice joke from a usually reliable source…very funny. As albona said in the comments below, and as the source has since emailed to tell me, George and Paul are only doing the regular 5:30-9:00 breakfast. Tim Webster will be on the Laws programme…my source doesn’t know who will fill in for John Stanley or Steve Price, I’m tipping Steve Liebmann and Murray Olds respectively. I suppose I was a bit too eager to accept the notion of George and Paul being broadcast nationally again as we don’t get to hear them in Canberra any more.End Update

Apparently Glenn Wheeler won’t be back until Saturday, although that seems a bit odd to me…that shift is a mystery. Mike Williams should be heard on Friday night.

Looking further ahead, and John Laws is back on deck on Monday, with an increased number of network stations. Lawsie will now be heard on a record 73 stations covering 1,500 towns and cities, with an estimated daily audience of two million people. It must cost a fortune for Toyota to advertise on that show!

In further 2UE movements, it is now strongly rumoured that Stan Zemanek’s replacement will either be announced or start on Monday. Interestingly the majority of names flying around as the supposed replacement for Stan are the “beauties” from his television talk show “Beauty and The Beast”. I’ve got to admit that I still fancy Stuart Bocking, especially as he has been put in that shift yet again, and this time without Rachel Friend as a sidekick (that experiment drew more than a few complaints…I can’t understand why, I thought they made a great duo). That being said, my sources are all saying that Stuart Bocking, Clive Robertson and Glenn Wheeler are not in the running for the job.

Bill Caralis’ “Supernetwork” appoints 10 new journalists

Radioinfo are running a story about Bill Caralis’ “Supernetwork” appointing ten new journalists. The article quotes the general manager of 2LM/ZZZfm Lismore, Chris Lodge, confirming the story.

Well I don’t know when they are counting from, but if it includes late last year, then I would just like to congratulate Leonie Ryan, ex-2UE producer, who is one of the new recruits in the 2LM/ZZZfm newsroom. Actually, I’ll congratulate you regardless of whether or not you are part of the ten new journalists.

John Stanley is back (among others)

2UE’s voice of reason is returning today, and so is their reasonable timetable.

Midnight-5:30am: New Day Australia (with whoever happens to turn up)
5:30am-9am: Breakfast with Mike and Fitz
9am-Midday: Tim Webster (filling in for John Laws who will be back in a few weeks)
Midday-12:12pm: Midday News
12:12pm-3pm: Afternoons with John Stanley
3pm-6pm: Drive with Steve Price
6pm-8pm: Sports Today (seemingly random hosts)
8pm-Midnight: Nights with (Wheeler/Bocking/Someone else???)

I think I’ll send John Stanley an email about the dream I had where he was an AFL commentator.

It is also worth mentioning that 2CC’s breakfast host Mike Jeffreys will no longer have to tell us each day that he is there until 10am due to summer programming, and 2CC’s drive host Mike Welsh returns from holidays today (as long as he doesn’t feel like having a “2UE pointless change” moment).

Stuart’s Gone Missing?

An interesting rumour just crossed my desk. Apparently Stuart Bocking will not be on tonight, and this has been planned for some time. John Kerr was asked to fill in but declined, so Clive Robertson will be on tonight.

How that rumour ties in with Glenn Wheeler saying that it is strange that he will be on Stan’s shift tomorrow night, considering the “2UE rumblings” I published about Stuart Bocking taking over Stan’s shift, is anyones guess.

2UE is a funny place at times…

Bocking to replace Zemanek?

One of my more credible sources has sent through a list of the changes they believe we will see overnight on 2UE shortly…I’m not convinced that it’s correct, but there are probably a couple correct details in there.

My source seems to think that Stuart Bocking will take over Stan Zemanek’s 8pm-midnight shift, and Rachel Friend (who co-hosted Stan’s shift with Stuart last night as they filled in for Glenn Wheeler) will get weekday New Day Australia. My source also thinks John Kerr will be relieved of all fill-in responsibilities, with Clive Robertson taking over as primary New Day fill-in.

Glenn Wheeler will remain as the fill-in for the 8pm-Midnight shift, but Clive Robertson will fill-in when Glenn can’t make it.

Clinton Maynard would be the secondary fill-in for New Day.

James Goodwin on 2CC

What a pleasant surprise it was to wake up at 7am and hear James Goodwin reading the news on 2CC…it’s a treat which is all too rare these days unfortunately. 2GB are lucky to have him as one of their federal political correspondents, he is very sorely missed from WIN News.

Larry’s Back!

2CA’s breakfast connumdrum has been solved, the show is once again going back to having only one host, namely Larry Appley. In the late 1990’s and early 2000’s, Larry was 2CA’s drive presenter. Welcome back Larry!

I’m still not quite sure what’s going on with the other shifts of the day, although I think it’s safe to say that ex-Breakfast Boy and current Program Director Leighton Archer will have a shift, I’m guessing drive, as I doubt Gerry Nyein, replacement for ex-morning/afternoon presenter Simon Pulis will be moved to drive.

I’ve got a recording of me telling a joke to Larry Appley and his sidekick of the time (can’t remember her name, and I think it was a fake name anyway) back in 2000, I’ll try and dig it up for Friday Funnies.

Update: 13 January 1:13pm: Just noticed that Hayden Miller (ex-3CS Colac) is also moving to 2CA…suddenly I get the feeling that 2CA are moving to weekday shifts of three hours each (9am-12pm, 12pm-3pm and 3pm-6pm). End Update

Canberra’s New Year Radio Movements

Over the summer break 2CA lost breakfast boy Paul Blunt to the Sunshine Coast, and music director/drive announcer Gregg Easton to nowhere in particular. However it looks like they are gaining Hayden Miller from 3CS in Colac. I don’t know whether he is a new breakfast boy or not, but at least 2CA are replacing lost staff!

FM 104.7 have lost Mason Edwards from Breakfast with Chris, Sarah and Mason. Their website indicates that the Chris and Sarah will continue as a duo. Apparently Mason has gone to sister station NXFM in Newcastle to anchor “Steve & Kim for Brekkie”, although seeing as he is neither Steve nor Kim, I’m a tad confused what the definition of “anchor” is in this case.

FM 104.7 and Mix 106.3 also lost their breakfast newsreader and senior journalist Matt Watson. Matt is currently considering his future, and 104.7 & Mix are looking for a replacement.

Other than that, people seem to be in their normal places (holidays excluded).

The sound of silence…and the sounds of silence

I know people at 2CC read this site, and I would like to let you all know that I am now at breaking point. Today has been an unmitigated disaster, with a strange attempt to fill in breakfast air time when the network programming didn’t come through, and now a complete failure of the automation and a constant repeating of the emergency tape’s copy of Simon and Garfunkel’s “The Sounds Of Silence”, not to mention yesterday’s failure to broadcast orange warning emergency information.

As for this afternoon, John B1_B5 made these comments a short time ago in the Rain, Hail, Blue and Orange Alerts post.

But let me just say this – I’m getting sick and tired of hearing them play “The Sound of Silence” every time they come back from a news break !

I’ve heard “The Sound Of Silence” being played 15 times in the past 2 hours !
They’re now playing it whenever thay go to an ad break as well.

Somebody obviously needs a swift kick up the rear end !

I then wrote:

It’s the emergency tape John…I hear it every now and then during New Day Australia, but today has been an absolute shocker for 2CC.

They obvious haven’t bothered to employ a panel operator today, they are automated, and either the pulses aren’t coming through from Sydney, or somebody killed the 2CC computer, or forgot to program the ad breaks…but that’s irrelevant, 2UE traffic and weather are coming through during the news, they need a panel operator for this show, and don’t have one.

I thought it was bad when they scheduled half the Christmas day ad breaks to be a minute overtime, drowning out 2UE with a cacophony of noise, but today is clearly worse.

I’m very disappointed with 2CC today, and for a fair bit of the last week, I’m surprised that the program director (whoever it is these days) didn’t recognise the need for a panel operator today.

In my opinion, senior staff should be monitoring the station, and the emergency tape should be setup to send a text message off to someone if it gets started…and if something like this happens, somebody should go to the station and fix things up.

In all seriousness, if I was a panel operator for 2CC, I would be making my way into 2CC right now (well, about two hours ago) to either panel until 6pm, or fix the automation.

2CC have been doing very well for the half a year or so, with minimal problems, and a strong commitment to making the station sound good…they should be ashamed of this latest effort…or lack thereof.

And I’m sorry, but the irony of “The Sounds Of Silence” being on an emergency tape triggered by 15 seconds of silence has well and truly worn off.

The only good thing about this afternoon is that we haven’t heard yesterday’s weather report since Murray Olds started, but I would prefer to hear it than yet another repeat of the bloody sounds of silence.

The bottom line on this is that if we have a repeat performance of today’s disaster, 2CC risk losing me to the horrid local ABC station…it might be filled with insane people, but at least they have local weather, don’t play yesterday’s weather, and aren’t going to play the same song 500 times a day.

If I, as a staunch supporter of 2CC, am considering switching station, think about how many people you have already lost.

Update 6:12pm: The normally automated shows appear to have scheduled ad breaks…Sports Today has ads! Hooray! End Update

Humphrey will not be shown at the time he is never shown at

If Win Television are running on time today, we should see the daily “Hey kids, due to the cricket Humphrey won’t be seen at this time today, but will be on at the special time of 9am tomorrow” message around about now (3:30pm).

Considering that Humphrey normally screens at 10:30am after Kerri-Anne (correction, 9am instead of Kerri Anne during summer), it has been mildly odd seeing that message at 3:30 in the afternoon for the last couple days (even before the cricket, during the repeat of Carols By Candlelight on Monday). The foibles of automation are fun to watch and hear.

For the record, Humphrey will be seen at 9am until the conclusion of the fifth Ashes cricket test. I will be taking the opportunity to catch a few episodes.

Bert’s Family Feud

I just found out how Bert’s Family Feud survey 100 people for each question…via their website!

I took part in a survey, the instructions quite clearly state to write the first thing that enters your head, and as such some of the answers are a wee bit odd.

Name something you associate with coffee
Milk

Name something you might swat
A fly

Name an animal you’d find in a rainforest
Giraffe

Give me a word that rhymes with ‘lunch’
Hunch

Name an occupation that deals with animals
Vet

Name something you associate with fashion models
Catwalk

Name something that children get attached to
Toys

Name something you associate with an owl
Hoot

Name something you might do to show you’re happy
Smile

Name something you might borrow from a friend
A shovel

Wheel Of Fortune Theme Music

A big thank you to the Grundy employee who wishes to remain anonymous, who sent me a copy of the original theme music from Wheel Of Fortune during Rob Elliott’s reign as host for Christmas. It’s even better than I remember it. It certainly loops a lot, but you don’t notice it when it’s in the background.

Click here for the theme music (4.49MB MP3).

Festively Missing Newsreaders

It looks like 2CC and 2CA’s weekend newsreaders are missing in a suspected case of festively-induced absences.

Yesterday, weekday morning newsreader Jane Turner was reading the news, and as such her pre-recorded weather forecasts have been playing overnight as per standard procedure, it is unusual to have the weekday morning newsreader reading the Saturday news.

This morning we have had two scheduled local bulletins turn into 2UE feed bulletins. Laura Tunstall and the team at 2UE are doing a great job, but I have to wonder how long it will be until a newsreader takes over at 2CC. As unusual as it is for the weekday morning newsreader to read Saturday news, it is even more unusual for 2CC to not have a local newsreader (either scheduled or fill-in) by the 6:30 bulletin.

I can only hope they have one by 7am, as Jane’s weather is now a tad long in the tooth as it refers to last night as “tonight” and it is now daylight outside.

That being said, all is forgiven as it is the festive season and radio stations do strange things around the festive season!

Update shortly after 7am: Welcome to 2CC’s newest weather reporter, Mike Frame! Still waiting for a newsreader. End Update

Update 7:30: Still a 2UE feed…I’m starting to wonder if this was an unusual Christmas Eve way of handling the news. End Update

Update 9:05am: Regardless of what happened (and I think it was a newsreader not turning up) 2CC have clearly decided to just use the 2UE feed and have Mike Frame do the weather. It will be interesting to see how Mike goes at fitting the weather in the allocated timeslots for the automation this afternoon and tonight. End Update

Update 12:10pm: I nearly fell over when I heard Francis Keany presenting the weather after a 2UE-feed news bulletin. I was looking forward to hearing Mike’s voice reading the pre-recorded weather for the next 18 hours, but alas he has just disappeared on holidays after a sterling effort as the fill-in weatherman, and Francis will be the first local voice on Christmas day at 12:04:40 after the 2CC weather intro. I’ll run through a list of lineup changes on Boxing Day once I get my head around them.End Update

Autocue fails on Win News

I was just watching the first few stories on Win News Late Edition and it looks like the autocue has failed at Win Television’s Kingston studios. From the moment the bulletin started, Peter leonard was constantly switching between looking at the camera and reading from the desk. To Peter’s credit, he clearly pre-read the bulletin and had memorised a fair bit of it. Well done Peter.

Hopefully Win get the autocue fixed soon.
