Election 2007 – 9:29pm

Maxine McKew is clearly ecstatic, but is not quite declaring her victory, saying “Bennelong is on a knife edge”. I’m sad to see John Howard go, but congratulations and well done Maxine.

Election 2007 – 9:24pm

Bennelong (70% counted)
Labor: 45.95%
Liberal: 45.19%
Greens: 5.36%

This will go to preferences, but I can’t see the greens preferences going to John Howard.

I might have to play “It’s My Party” for Peter Costello after all. The “And I’ll cry if I want to” line would be very appropriate.

Maxine McKew is about to make her victory speech in Bennelong.

Election 2007 – 9:18pm

John Howard is going to concede shortly. 2UE/2CC have been reporting that they will cross to him shortly, and Nine crossed briefly when they were waiting for him to appear.

It looks like John Howard will concede before Kevin Rudd declares his own victory.

There is not going to be any change to any seats in the ACT. Annette Ellis (Labor) is keeping Canberra. Bob McMullan (Labor) is keeping Fraser. Kate Lundy (Labor) and Gary Humphries (Liberal) are keeping their senate seats.

Canberra (72% counted)
Labor: 51%
Liberal: 35%
Greens: 13%

Fraser (73% counted)
Labor: 52%
Liberal: 31%
Greens: 13%

Election 2007 – 9:04pm

Mike Kelly has declared himself the victor of Eden-Monaro, but it is far too close to call. It will go to preferences and that will probably favour Labor as the Greens have about four thousand votes. He will probably be right, but it’s still a bit early to call it.

Eden-Monaro (67% counted)
Labor: 26,406
Liberal: 25,400
Greens: 4,393
Acacia Rose (Ind): 1,293

Election 2007 – 9:00pm

Tracey Grimshaw, without sound on Channel Nine, looks like she’s just mildly tipsy. Rather amusing to watch

Election 2007 – 8:50pm

Nationally it is now beyond doubt. Labor have won. Even if all of Western Australia were to go to the coalition, the required swing to the coalition in the other states would be virtually impossible. I’m declaring it…Labor have won, Kevin Rudd is the new prime minister.

Federal (54% counted):
Labor: 67
Coalition: 42
Independent: 2

Election 2007 – 8:40pm

Eden-Monaro (60% counted)
Labor: 23,741
Liberal: 23,072
Far too close to call

Bennelong (60% counted)
Labor: 25,776
Liberal: 25,258
This is also very close, some say John Howard is out, but I think it is far too close to call.

November 24th, 2007 at 08:18pm

Election 2007 – 8:05pm

Nationally it’s looking very good for Labor:
Labor 53
Coalition 32
Independent 1

Queensland still hasn’t produced a definitive result, but it looks like Queensland and Western Australia will be the places which decide the result. The bottom line is that the coalition need to win these states to win the election. If the Queensland results don’t show a swing to the coalition within the next hour, you can expect Kevin Rudd to claim victory at about 9:30…otherwise it will probably be 10:30 or 11pm before we can be sure enough of the result to see a leader claim victory.

November 24th, 2007 at 08:04pm

Election 2007 – 7:45pm

Nationally Labor are winning by enough to easily win this election at this stage
Labor: 46
Coalition: 24

By the looks of it this is not an “actual win” figure but an “estimated win” from the AEC. They have given both ACT seats to Labor.

Fraser with 42% counted:
Labor: 52%
Liberal: 30%

Canberra with 14% counted:
Labor: 52%
Liberal: 34%

Eden Monaro is far too close to call with 34% counted:
Liberal: 13.558
Labor: 13,228

Hume 46% counted:
Liberal 48%
Labor 39%

November 24th, 2007 at 07:51pm

Election 2007 – 7:35pm

Eden Monaro still very close, but has just swung to Labor
Labor: 9,998
