Has anybody here noticed the minor change to the website? It now has a favicon which looks like the head of Samuel from Samuel In Dolgnwot.

Actually, I’ll show that to you at a larger size:

This should be appearing in your browser in the address bar, and in just about any other location you have a link to Samuel’s Blog, including bookmarks/favourites and the tabs in Firefox, Opera, Konqueror and Safari just to name a few.
It is unique as far as I can tell, and I think it adds a touch of useful branding to the site. I hope you like it.

Whoops, we exceeded 20,000 page views again. This time it happened at 2:52:32PM on ANZAC Day. This severely skews the blog view stats collected by Webstat for the month (free Webstat accounts stop counting after 20,000 page views), and as such I will be using the AwStats report generated by my webhost (Bluehost) as the basis for just about everything in the Blog View Stats which would normally be handled by Webstat this month. I will still provide the Webstat PDFs.
I am not currently in a financial position to throw money at upgrading the Webstat counter (which is, in my view, technically superior to the web server log analysing statistics tools (such as Webstat), but when I am in that position, it will be near the top of my priorities.

Based on the visitor numbers, and the increased comment activity, I get the feeling that there are a few people waiting around for Samuel In Dolgnwot and Samuel’s Musican(s) Of The Week.
I’m terribly sorry, but I’m going to have to push them back to tomorrow night. You see I’ve had almost no sleep in the last 36 hours (and my alarm didn’t go off during my quick nap this afternoon), and I haven’t actually drawn this week’s Samuel In Dolgnwot or chosen the Musican(s) Of The Week.
Anyway, for those of you who would like a sneak peak at the Balloon Fiesta photos click here. I have numbered them 1 through 48, and the ones which start with “thumb-” are the smaller versions of the photos.

As many of you would have noticed, just about every image you see here is buried somewhere in the /wp-content/ folder. Up until recently it was possible to browse this folder without hassle, which is something I don’t mind as I like people to be able to sift through the files in there, after all, it is all on the blog somewhere.
When I upgraded to version 2 of WordPress, the upgrade script added an index.php file to the /wp-content/ folder which produced a blank page instead of a directory listing. I noticed this the other day and it has now been removed.
Apart from people being able to peruse the files in there, it is also important to have this folder accessable so that the National Library of Australia’s PANDORA project can gather not only the posts and files I link to, but also an accurate a full collection and index of the files on the site. Back in January when the site was last archived by PANDORA they were able to do that because I had linked to one of the many Blog View Stats folders, and as such, were able to follow the links through to the rest of the directories. Having a blank index page on /wp-content/ would have made that task impossible.
Anyway, if you’re feeling curious, feel free to take a look around inside /wp-content/

As promised, at 1:56:44 there was a celebration of the birthday of Samuel’s Blog, which included a singing of “Happy Birthday”, some coffee, and a few photos.
First up we have Nattie, myself, and a cup of coffee. In the background obscured by my head there is a Samuel’s Blog birthday sign which is basically the current birthday page header.

Following that is a photo of Nattie and the sign.

And a closeup of Nattie

And a picture of me, my coffee and the sign.

Happy Birthday Samuel’s Blog!
Click here to hear “Happy Birthday”.

It’s 1:56:44PM, the time one year ago when Samuel’s Blog made a start as a journal of my activities at Linux.Conf.Au 2005.
As this post appear I am raising a cup of coffee with Nattie to celebrate the birthday, I should have a photo online soon.
Happy Birthday!

Happy Birthday Samuel’s Blog!

There were 5,955 views of the front page on all of its URLs.
The most popular articles were:
Google remained the most popular search engine, followed by Yahoo, and MSN.
The search keywords were mostly various combinations and misspellings of my name, and variations of “schnappi video”. Among the odd keywords were
- curious articles
- podcaster anonymous rings in once a week
- grass drill machine for doors
- channel 9 free cricket to watch
- uses os circular motion
- clarkconnect with lamp
- peep holes in public bathroom
- Reason Like Pineapples
- rambling “and my god have mercy on your soul” “no points”
- what to do when confused
- blog fire alarm control panel
- “a 90 minute” “47 minutes”
- Samuel 30 “3 – 6”

Internet Explorer dropped a couple percentage points but was still the most popular browser with 62.98% of the readership, Firefox gained nearly as much as Internet Explorer lost, and was next with 32.27%, and Safari seemed to pick up the slack on 3.75%. Opera, Netscape, Mozilla and Konqueror were all under 1%.
Windows was the most popular Operating System with 86.67% of the readership, followed by Mac with 12.53%, and Linux with 0.78%. Windows had a minor drop, as did Linux, which seemed to be picked up by Mac.
Australia, The US and Japan and The UK topped the Countries, with 83.76%, 5.59%, 4.52% and 2.09% of the readership respectively, which seems to show that people in countries outside of Australia are taking a growing interest in this blog.

I’ve now corrected the GMT offset setting in wordpress to take into account the change back to Eastern Standard Time (GMT+10). I remember having to change it to GMT+11 when Daylight Saving started in October.
It was actually Monday, October 31 when I noticed that I hadn’t fixed the setting, as I went to manually alter the timestamp of my Happy 30th Birthday 2CC post to 7am before hitting the Publish button right on 7am. I then went to the front page of the blog and was shocked to find that my post had disappeared, it was showing up in the admin interface but not on the public side. The timestamp was correct, everything was correct, so what could have caused my perfectly timed post to not appear at the right time, 7am, to coincide with the anniversary 2CC’s first moments on-air (7am, 31 October 1975).
I then started thinking about Daylight Saving, which had come into effect the previous day, and realised that I hadn’t changed the timezone of the blog to be in line with Daylight Saving. I quickly rectified that, and my post magically appeared…albeit at one minute past the hour of seven o’clock.
Just looking back on that post about 2CC’s birthday, and John Kerr appears in it wishing 2CC a happy birthday!

It’s April, and that means that we are into the birthday month of Samuel’s Blog. April 17 will mark one year since the start of Samuel’s Blog.
This is actually a point of controversy as the first post was actually on the 12th of March 2004, but I don’t count that as the birthday as it was just a post to mark me opening my blogger.com account. I didn’t actually use the account for anything until April 17, 2005, and as such, I count that as the birthday.
Over the next couple of weeks leading up to the birthday, I will be running a “Year In Review” series which will look at some of the things which have happened on this blog over the last year.

I know that I am now very late with Samuel In Dolgnwot, and haven’t posted anything for a little while, but I’ve been ill.
I was a little bit off colour on Sunday, and everything posted on Sunday (except my notice about Samuel In Dolgnwot and the crossing out notice) were written and scheduled on Saturday night. I had quite a headache, sore throat and other problems on Sunday night, so my email and website check were brief, I didn’t feel up to drawing Samuel In Dolgnwot on Sunday.
I spent most of Yesterday in bed not feeling well, and got quite a lot of sleep. At the moment I feel reasonable, but not the best. I should, if all goes to plan, have Samuel In Dolgnwot online tonight, but I can’t guarantee it.

Quite simply because Internet Explorer doesn’t follow standards properly and as such didn’t like some of the crossing out in the most recent footy tips post. Firefox, Opera, and probably Safari which do seem to follow standards, did not have this problem.
The problem has now been fixed, and those of you using Internet Explorer are free from the crossing out, although I do have to say something along the lines of:

(Or Opera, or Mozilla Suite, or even Netscape if you are really desperate)

You may have noticed the recent suggestions from some people that I should bring back to Coffee-Cup-O-Meter and the Stepometer.
Well, it’s funny you mention it, as this has been on the cards for quite some time. I have every intention of bringing these back, but it should be noted that they are special features, and only appear occasionally. The stepometer was last in session around the middle of last year…and Steppy is ready and raring, so the stepometer will probably be back very soon. I will probably bring back the coffee-cup-o-meter soon as well.
Stay tuned for details.

Here we are again, with another look at the Blog View Stats for the previous month. I always enjoy this overview of the month, and I think it is really quite fascinating. Before I continue I must apoligise for the rather slow week we’ve just had here on Samuel’s Blog, I’ve been a bit busy and not really had any incentive to write an awful lot this week…we should have more in the next week.
I like the layout of last month’s stats that I’m sticking with that as a template, I will probably clean up the Samuel’s Persiflage stats next month as they will quicly become a mess if I continue to format them in this manner.
Anyway, on with the stats!
The Webstat reports for February can be found here
There were 18,327 page views in February, down from 20,002+ in January, and 5,025 visitors, down from 5,299+ in January.
There were 7,386 views of the front page on all of its URLs.
The most popular articles were:
Google remained the most popular search engine, followed by Yahoo, and MSN….no surprises there!
The search keywords were again mostly various combinations and misspellings of my name. “schnappi video” came in 91 times for some reason. Among the odd keywords were
- mikes-johns
- smoothwallsamuel@gmail.com password
- “To initiate the process for resetting the password for your”
- channel 9 free cricket to watch
- ready presentation
- the first time i saw the cow
- summary of the day after tommorow
- woman for stuart bocking
- phil-ricky
- bunnings belconnen window
- Tianjin to Wenzhou
- Where is my schoolbag?
- netherlands law 2CC
- taking listeners beyond the ad break
- practice conversation in the restuarant
- what is the function of dettol?
- ç‡ƒæ²¹é™„åŠ è´¹ extra
Internet Explorer was the most popular browser with 65.36% of the readership, Firefox was next with 30.52%, and by Safari on 2.81%. It would appear that the gains by firefox were at the cost of all other browsers.
Windows was the most popular Operating System with 87.36% of the readership, followed by Mac with 10.78%, and Linux with 1.82%. It looks like a few people jumped from Windows to Mac, and Mac recorded it’s first double digit percentage. I was surprised to find good old fashioned UNIX with 4 page views and OS/2 with 1 page view, it’s amazing what people will use from time to time.
Australia, The US and The UK topped the Countries, with 88.53%, 3.26% and 2.72% of the readership respectively.

I previously mentioned that Wayne Mac will be on 6PR tonight, he has since informed me that he will also be on 2UE tonight with Mike Williams (aka Shirl from the Mike Walsh Show).
I don’t know the exact time of Wayne’s 2UE appearance, but it should be sometime between 6PM and 9PM Sydney time (7AM-10AM GMT). 2CC (and possibly some other regional stations) relay Mike Williams, so you might be able to hear it locally, if not, the 2UE webstream is available on the 2UE website.
Wayne will also be on 6PR’s “The Way We Were” program from 10PM-11PM Perth Time (1AM-2AM Canberra Time, 2PM-3PM GMT). Again, some stations may relay this, but if you can’t receive it locally, the 6PR webstream is available on the 6PR website.
I’ll do my best to bring you recordings of the 2UE and 6PR interviews, although I can’t guarantee anything.
In response to the allegations that Wayne is an undisclosed advertiser on this website and/or my podcast…no, I just enjoy hearing his interviews, and where possible try to get copies for his benefit, he is not an advertiser or sponsor of this website and/or my podcast, just a friend.
