Samuel’s Musicians Of The Week: Sneaky Sound System

This is one that I’ve been planning on running for a while. I tend to have trouble picking my favourite Sneaky Sound System song, usually struggling to pick from 16, Because Of You People Think I’m Crazy, Kansas City, and the song I am featuring this week (there also happens to be a few songs from this group which I like, but not as much as the ones I just mentioned, and then some which I simply can not stand…it’s funny how that all works).

The song which I am featuring this week is one which I have played loudly in the car more times than I care to count. Almost no trip to Deniliquin has been complete without it and it has nicely filled the void between areas without 3G mobile reception out that way a few times. It was also given a good run on my way back to Deniliquin from Shepparton one night in March, 2009 after I had seen a movie at a cinema in Shepparton.

Anyway, the reason I decided on this song and not one of the aforementioned songs is that, a few weeks ago, as I was driving in to work, I was listening to The Sean Hannity Show (or maybe it was Mark Levin, to be honest I’m not entirely sure now) and heard him take a call from a caller in Portland, Oregon, who was listening through KUFO-AM. I hadn’t realised before this that there was a station with the callsign KUFO…it’s such a great callsign, and I thought there was a lot of potential in it. I figured that with a callsign like that, it had to be an affiliate of Coast To Coast AM, which specialises in discussions about UFOs, aliens and other unusual phenomena…alas, I checked, and it isn’t, which is a real shame as there is a whole heap of imaging which could be built around that callsign for that show.

In my attempt to check if KUFO is an affiliate of Coast To Coast AM, I went to type KUFO in to the search box on the Coast To Coast website and accidentally left off the K, which naturally resulted in the search being for UFO. This produced a lot of results, but in amongst the results were a few mentions of bumper music used during particular episodes of the show. As would be expected, the song which I’m featuring this week, Sneaky Sound System’s “UFO” has been used as bumper music a few times on Coast To Coast AM, most recently on an episode entitled “UFO Year In Review” on December 27, 2009. In this show, the song was used as bumper music leading in to the hard break (a break which airs at a set time, and which the program must accommodate, unlike other breaks which “float” and can be taken whenever they seem to fit the show, within certain time constraints) at the bottom of the first hour.

(h/t Premiere Radio Networks. The more recently archived shows have higher quality audio available to subscribers. This episode’s subscriber replay audio comes from their older, lower-quality streams)

It’s a pity that it was used leading in to a break and not out of a break, because songs get a longer run on Coast To Coast coming out of a break. Still, it’s great that such an aptly titled song gets a run on this show.

Enough of the back story; on with the song. Here is the video clip for the radio edit of the song (I can’t decide whether I prefer the radio edit or the full version, but the video is only on the radio edit so I’ll run with that). My favourite part of the video is the alien creatures which appear in the second half…they always give me a good chuckle.

I just don’t wanna be lonely (lonely, lonely, lonely)
Cause the lights were shining ever so bright (bright, bright, bright)
In my hand there’s a pulse of my beating heart
I’m biting my tongue there’s a plastic man on the telephone
Can you see the bright light, shining, I don’t know
Can you see the bright light, shining, shining….

I saw a UFO but nobody believes me (believes me, believes me, believes me)
I was 16 miles from home with nobody in sight (sight, sight, sight)
I saw a UFO but nobody believes me (believes me, believes me, believes me)
(oh oh oh, oh oh oh, oh oh oh)
(tonight) And what’s it gonna take to get me back home tonight
(oh oh oh, oh oh oh)

Can you see the bright light, shining, I don’t know (don’t know, don’t know)
And is it a reflection of anyone, the big glow (glow, glow, glow)
And tell me this is all good, and you say, I don’t know (know, know)
I’m very, very far from home (home, home, home)

I saw a UFO but nobody believes me (believes me, believes me, believes me)
I was 16 miles from home with nobody in sight (sight, sight, sight)
I saw a UFO but nobody believes me (believes me, believes me, believes me)
(oh oh oh, oh oh oh, oh oh oh)
(tonight) And what’s it gonna take to get me back home tonight
(oh oh oh, oh oh oh)
(tonight, tonight, tonight, tonight, tonight) (hello, hello, hello, hello, hello, hello, hello)
(hello, hello, hello, hello, hello)
(hello, hello, hello, hello, hello, hello)
(hello, hello, hello, hello, hello, hello, hello)

I saw a UFO but nobody believes me
I was 16 miles from home with nobody in sight (sight, sight, sight)
I saw a UFO but nobody believes me (believes me, believes me, believes me)
And what’s it gonna take to get me back home tonight
(tonight, tonight, tonight) (oh, oh, oh)

And what’s it gonna take to
And what’s it gonna take to
And what’s it gonna
And what’s it gonna
And what’s it gonna take to

2CC change their phone number

2CC, Canberra’s commercial talk radio station, have changed their open line number to something a bit more reminiscent of their on-air identity. The old 6255 4444 is gone, replaced with 6255 1206, a nod to their frequency, 1206 kHz.

This isn’t the first time 2CC have changed their phone number. In fact it has changed three times in the last fifteen years. Originally 2CC used 11611 as their open line number having somehow managed to retain it despite Canberra moving beyond five-digit phone numbers. Eventually (it may have been during the change from seven to eight digit phone numbers in 1997, but I thought it was later) 2CC changed to 6255 6666, and later on in the early 2000s they changed to 6255 4444. At the time of that change I was jokingly told that it was because a Feng Shui expert told them to do it.

It is nice to see the number change to something a tad more logical, especially given that 2CC’s sister station 1053 2CA has had both 6241 1053 and 6242 1053 for yonks. Hopefully the new number serves them well for a long time to come.

Fanatically following sporting teams

An email to 2UE’s John Kerr

Good morning John,

Well I can tell you that I definitely fall in to the category of a fanatic when it comes to supporting the Bulldogs in both the AFL and NRL. As an example, during the AFL pre-season I had to be at work while the Bulldogs' games were on, so I recorded the radio coverage of the games on my iPhone (Rex Hunt was calling the games and I love listening to Rex call football) and avoided the scores all night which is a tad difficult where I work, and then after work set off on a drive to Goulburn and back so that I could listen to the games through the car radio. The Dogs won the first game and lost the second game, and didn't progress to the next round, but it was worth the effort.

And it's not confined to me. In this household everyone is fanatical about their teams. In the AFL, Dad's a Carlton fan…well one week back in 2000 I won a competition on 2CA in Canberra where Daniel Gibson was working. Daniel, who is now a weatherman and newsreader for Prime Television, is an avid Bulldogs fan, and the Dogs were playing Carlton that weekend, so when Dad and I went to the radio station to pick up my prize (a vegemite t-shirt from memory), Daniel was wearing his Bulldogs jersey so he and I wound Dad up a bit, and the Dogs won that weekend. On the Monday, Daniel said to me that he could picture me and Dad sitting at opposite ends of the couch in our team scarves and beanies, one of us cheering and the other crying…that's pretty much what happened on that Sunday!

Anyway, this Earth Hour nonsense tonight…finally it falls on a sensible night. Kristina Keneally's fans will be able to turn the lights off and go home at 8:30. I, on the other hand, will be turning the lights on for Human Achievement Hour at 8:30 as a protest against Earth Hour and its promotion of the flawed theory of man-made global warming.

Have a wonderful day John, and thanks again for your note yesterday.

Regards,
Samuel Gordon-Stewart

3rd: Mix 106.3 16.9% (down from 18.0%)

5th: ABC Classic FM 7.6% up from 7.4%
6th: 2CA 6.8% (up from 4.1%)

Early incomplete results for Canberra Radio Ratings #1, 2010

The first radio ratings for the year for Canberra have been released to radio stations, with the public release expected tomorrow.

Jock’s Journal have received some figures which I’m unable to confirm at this stage. They have published the following figures:
FM 104.7: 20.2% (up from 18.3%)
666 ABC Canberra: 18.5% (up from 16.1%)
Mix 106.3: 16.9% (down from 18%)
JJJ: 8% (down from 13.5%)
ABC Classic FM: 7.6% (up from 7.4%)
2CA: 6.8% (up from 4.1%)
2CC: 6.3% (no change)

This doesn’t cover every station in the market, so I can only be sure that the top four are indeed the top four. It’s also interesting to note that with the exception of 2CC, most of the stations have jumped back to their approximate ratings share in last year’s first survey.

I’ll publish a more comprehensive summary tomorrow when the official figures are released.

The Sunday Bits for April 4, 2010

The name isn’t original (it was the original name of the Mike Jeffreys highlights package of a Sunday morning on 2CC) but I intend on using it anyway as it is an appropriate name. Basically my plan is that whatever I don’t get around to writing about during the week but still want to mention, can be posted as a brief story in a collection of stories on a Sunday.

In a way, it’s cheating, as it means that I really don’t have to think too hard on a Sunday as I can write most of this during the week.

The Bureau of Meteorology’s national weather radar service has apparently recorded some peculiar patterns such as spirals and doughnuts, causing conspiracy websites to go in to meltdown. The Bureau are blaming “occasional interference to the radar data” but are refusing to comment on the matter.

Sorry BOM, but until you at least attempt to explain what could cause the interference, I’m with the conspiracy buffs…there is more to this story.

***

FlashForward’s ratings have hit a new low, continuing a general downward trend. In a way I’m pleased about this. I love the show, but as I said from the outset, it’s not a show which can viably stretch its storyline beyond one season.

***

On the subject of ratings, 2GB’s Alan Jones and Ray Hadley both recorded their 50th consecutive ratings victory, spearheading 2GB’s continued dominance of Sydney’s airwaves. It was 2GB’s 48th consecutive win. Every single one of 2GB’s weekday shifts rakes in double digit ratings, with all but Jason Morrison’s show taking out overall first spot. Jason is in third spot on 11.3% behind the Hamish and Andy juggernaut (I seriously don’t get Hamish and Andy…I know that a lot of people do and I congratulate them on their success, but I just don’t find the show funny) and the ABC’s Richard Glover.

There are two misconceptions in this world which never cease to amaze me. “Conservative = authoritarian” and “gay = left wing”. Both, while possible and in a number of cases, actual, are not necessarily true. President of “Right Pride“, an organisation representing conservative gay people, Mark Ciavola, appeared on KXNT’s Morning Source with Alan Stock to set the record straight. Mark’s motto? “Less Taxes. More Dead Terrorists!”

You’re a pastor at a church, attendance is falling, and you want to bring people in to share the Easter message. What do you do? How about giving away over $2 million in prizes to people who attend your Easter services? That’s precisely what a church in Texas is doing and, apparently it’s working. The question is though, will the people come back next week?

***

2CC and 2CA swapped breakfast hosts for half an hour on April 1. I was asleep and missed it (I got up at 8:30am Thursday and have been awake for all but 12 hours since). Apparently it confused a lot of people. Their news also ran a story about the service station in Campbell re-opening and selling fuel at something like $1.10 per litre. It’s that sort of within-the-realms-of-possibility April Fools story which makes so many radio April Fools Day news stories so much more believable than nonsense like Google’s vowel outage.

***

And finally, daylight saving has ended. I’m disappointed because I like the dark mornings, but I suppose that with the sun rising about about 7am in daylight saving time as it is, if we left it in place we’d be having peak hour in the dark by the time winter rolls around. Hmmm, if Kevin Rudd did that, the mechanics would be the beneficiaries, and would probably have to put massive grammatically incorrect electoral advertising useful and informative signs in front of their buildings.

Happy Easter everybody.

Crocmedia “AFL Live” webstreams

Update April 1, 2013: It seems that Google is still directing people to this page after all this time, despite it being very out-of-date now. Under the current radio rights agreement, Crocmedia’s AFL Live is streamed via afl.com.au and the AFL app. Depending on the day it is either listed as “AFL Live”, “CROC” or “Crocmedia”. On a normal weekend they are calling the Friday night match, the Saturday 1:30pm match, the Saturday 7:30pm match, and the Sunday 3pm match (or on occasion the 1pm match). Additionally they are relaying SEN’s call of the Saturday and Sunday twilight (4:30pm) match, which is interesting as SEN are not taking their first quarter of the Saturday twilight match due to a scheduling conflict, and AFL Live is only taking the 2nd half of the Sunday twilight match due to a scheduling conflict. They also share an AFL post-match show after the Friday and Saturday matches. It’s a surprisingly complicated agreement between AFL Live and SEN, but it is producing fantastic coverage and they should be congratulated.

Long story short. If you’ve landed here looking for the AFL Live webstream, please visit AFL.com.au or open the official AFL app. End Update

I’m hesitant to post this because I’m not convinced that the stations are supposed to be streaming, and I might be shooting myself in the foot by posting this, however…

Both Edge FM and 2AY are streaming Crocmedia’s AFL Live with chief callers Sandy Roberts and Rex Hunt.
Edge FM: http://live.edgefm.com.au:8003/edgefm.ogg
2AY: http://albury.aceradio.com.au:82/broadwave.asx

The Edge FM webstream is of a higher quality, but won’t play in Windows Media Player, whereas 2AY’s webstream will. Try both, see which one works for you. Other stations may be streaming this but I haven’t checked others at this time.

I must say that seeing as I was assured a while back that 2CA would be taking the AFL coverage and I was then corrected by Capital Radio, I am pleased to be able to find this AFL coverage online. If anybody knows of any other stations which are streaming “AFL Live” online, please let me know and I’ll add them to the list.

Farewell and good luck to Michael Watson

2CC/2CA’s production guru Michael Watson is leaving the stations after having worked there for 14 years, according to Jock’s Journal.

Michael has done a lot of great work for 2CC and 2CA over the years, although if I have to pick one particular thing which I have the fondest memory of…it would probably be the old Sgt. Pepper competitions on 2CA. I was also particularly fond of the piece he put together (OK, I’m 99% sure it was him…somebody please correct me if I’m wrong) after I announced my (later aborted) run for federal parliament on 2007. Just looking around for that now, I realise that I didn’t ever post it online…so here it is:

And of course, there was that brilliant remix of my original Samuel’s Persiflage intro
[audio:https://samuelgordonstewart.com/wp-content/SamuelsPersiflage/originalintroremix.mp3]

That anybody could make something good out of that ghastly (albeit fun) original intro is quite an achievement.

Best of luck for the future Michael!

Canberra Radio Ratings #2, 2009

Originally filed at 12:13am, September 24
Updates are now complete. All ratings data is below.

Nielsen will release the 2nd and last Canberra radio ratings for 2009 later today and, as usual, I’ll post the results here when they come in.

The figures were sent to radio stations yesterday and some details have leaked. According to Jock’s Journal, 104.7 leads the pack on 18.3% and Mix 106.3 is in 2nd place on 18%. This means that 104.7 have retained first place, but lost audience share, dropping from 20.5%. 666 ABC Canberra have been bumped from 2nd place and have lost audience share, they were on 19%. Mix have climbed from 3rd to 2nd and gained audience, jumping from 16% to 18%.

Unlike the ratings for “metropolitan markets”, the publicly released ratings for Canberra are only overall figures and not shift-by-shift and age group figures, which means those figures get selectively released in the press releases from the stations…and in leaks. So far all that I have heard is a figure which relates to 2CC…apparently the Mark Parton breakfast show, the Steve Price morning show and weekends all increased their audience share, while the Mike Welsh drive show lost audience share. I’m awaiting confirmation of this. (Update: Breakfast audience share didn’t move but the number of listeners went up, and evenings went up as well)

More details to follow.

Update: The ratings are in, and we have shift-by-shift figures as well.

1st: FM 104.7 18.3% (down from 20.5%)

I’ll come back and update this with further details, including a summary of shifts later on. Unfortunately I don’t have any time to do so right now.

Update 3:23pm: OK, back again, and time to go in to detail about the ratings, and as I’m in the unusual position of having a metro-market style report in my possession, I might as well cover the shift-by-shift and demographic figures, albeit without graphs as I’m not going to drastically alter my spreadsheet for what is probably a once off occurrence. This will take a little while so I’ll update the page every few minutes as I go.

Incidentally, I see that the less detailed public report is now online as well.

Jane Turner’s final day

Whilst Jane presented her final news bulletin for 2CC and 2CA a few days ago, she is still working there. Today is Jane’s final day with Capital Radio. Susie Thompson takes her place on Monday.

Jane is heading back to Tasmania, and I, for one, wish her all the best. Her dulcet tones will be missed in Canberra.

Correction and apology

Whilst I have updated the post in question, it is now so far down the page that I feel obligated to post a seperate correction.

The story which I wrote on the weekend about 2CC and 2CA dropping their local news service on weekends, is wrong. Whilst they did drop local news last weekend, it has been brought to my attention that this was a once-off occurrence, caused a temporary shortage of staff.

I apologise to the people at Capital Radio for this story.

Due to this story, and recent incorrect stories on this blog about Capital Radio, I have taken the decision to stop commenting on issues relating specifically to Capital Radio for the time being.

Capital Radio News dead on the weekend: Updated…it lives!

Update 17 June: I have been informed that, contrary to the information below, 2CC and 2CA are in fact not dumping local news on weekends, and instead only closed the local newsroom last weekend due to a shortage of staff. Needless to say, I am pleased to hear this.

I apologise to the people at Capital Radio. I think it might be worthwhile if I just stop commenting on things relating to Capital Radio for a while. End Update

I’ll sum it up in one word: “disappointed”.

2CC and 2CA seem to have dumped local news on weekends, opting instead to take 2UE news all day. Previously, locally produced news bulletins were broadcast every half hour from 6am until 9am, and then every hour until midday. Now, zilch, zero, zip.

This drops the local news service back to producing less news than they did before the local newsroom started producing the entire news service instead of just local news. I have vivid memories of a time when 2CC took 2UE news and followed it with a local news bulletin, even on the weekend…to not even do that is, as I said earlier, disappointing.

It’s possible that I have just been spoiled by a good local news service in recent years and that this dropping of local news on weekends just brings the station in line with what many other stations do, however this doesn’t change the fact that it is disappointing that a standard can be set, and then the service can drop away in such a manner, to lower levels than the old standard.

Whilst I have a very busy day lined up tomorrow, I will be sure to listen with interest in the morning to see if there are any changes to the weekday news service. I, for one, hope that there aren’t.

Update: Weekdays are not affected by this change, thankfully. End Update

Canberra Radio Ratings #1 for 2009

It doesn’t look like Nielsen Media Research have placed the full results online yet, however Jock’s Journal have this brief blurb:

104.7 has rated No 1 in the latest Canberra ratings (Nielsen Media Research – People 10+ Sun-Mon). They were followed by ABC 666 with 19%, then Mix 106.3 – 16%. 2CA rated 5.9% with sister station 2CC on 5.6%.

I’m assuming that they mean “Sunday to Saturday” and not “Sunday to Monday”.

Anyway, full results as they come to hand.

Update: Full details now online. Click here to view them. End Update

They used to work together…

Remember these two gentlemen?
Paul Blunt and Leighton Archer

It’s Paul Blunt and Leighton Archer hosting 2CA’s breakfast show, on the day of 2CA’s 75th birthday in 2006. At the end of 2006 the duo split with Paul leaving the station and Leighton staying on at 2CA and doing a number of jobs. Leighton left in October last year.

The reason that I bring all of this up is that I was tempted to write this article midway through last week when I noticed that Paul Blunt had returned to Canberra from Light FM in Melbourne, taking on the Drive (2pm-6pm) shift and the Acting Music Director role at Mix 106.3. Leighton returned a couple weeks ago and has been 2CC’s and 2CA’s traffic reporter.

On that basis alone it makes for a somewhat interesting story, but there is a new twist to it which has come to light in the last day which makes the whole thing even more interesting. 2CA have announced a change to their lineup for 2009…Ilija Dugandzic (afternoons 1pm-4pm and Music Director) has resigned, and will be replaced by, you guessed it, Leighton Archer. Leighton returns to 2CA in February.

In terms of playlists, I think it’s fair to say that 2CA’s immediate rival is Mix 106.3, so it’s rather interesting that the former “Breakfast Boys” are now “Afternoon Adversaries”. It’s such a pity that I don’t have access to the raw ratings figures as it would be interesting to see how the trend lines go on this particular battle.

I suppose this means that ATN will be looking for another traffic reporter…pity in some ways, Leighton sounded quite excited by the chaos of the traffic on many occasions, and I haven’t heard many Australian traffic reporters who sound excited about what they’re reporting.

Anyway, a belated “welcome back” to both Paul and Leighton, it’s good to have you both back on Canberra’s airwaves.
