Samuel’s Musicians Of The Week: Infernal

It’s a rather interesting coincidence that when I went to Google Video to find the video clip for the feature song, the first thing to catch my eye on the Google Video home page was what appears to be the entire science fiction film TRON. This is a coincidence because the video for the feature song has a very TRONesque feel to it, and even steals the TRON Light Cycle. Until today, I had not seen the video for this song, so it was quite a surprise.

The feature song is “From Paris To Berlin”.

From Paris to Berlin
And every disco I get in
My heart is pumping for love
Pumping for love
‘Cause when I’m thinkin’ of you
And all the things we could do
My heart is pumping for love
You left me longing for you, you, you

From Paris to Berlin
And every disco I get in
My heart is pumping for love
Pumping for love
‘Cause when I’m thinkin’ of you
And all the things we could do
My heart is pumping for love

Patience is a game
And every night I say your name
Hoping that you’ll answer
’cause I’m going insane
It’s quite along time ago
You brought me out of control
Hungry for your lovin’
Like I know what that might be

From Paris to Berlin
And every disco I get in
My heart is pumping for love
Pumping for love
‘Cause when I’m thinkin’ of you
And all the things we could do
My heart is pumping for love
You left me longing for you
You left me longing for you
You left me longing for you
You left me longing for you

Teasing was the thing
And now I just can’t let it go
Meetin’ you was something no-one else needs to know
I quess I’m thinkin’ of you
Like I would know what to do
If and when I found you, but I don’t
I’ve got no clue

From Paris to Berlin
And every disco I get in
My heart is pumping for love
Pumping for love
‘Cause when I’m thinkin’ of you
And all the things we could do
My heart is pumping for love
You left me longing for you
You left me longing for you
You left me longing for you
You left me longing for you

Who-hou-u
Who-hou-u
Who-hou-u
Who-hou-u
Who-hou-u
Who-hou-u
Who-hou-u

From Paris to Berlin
And every disco I get in
My heart is pumping for love
Pumping for love
‘Cause when I’m thinkin’ of you
And all the things we could do
My heart is pumping for love
You left me longing for you

From Paris to Berlin
And every disco I get in
My heart is pumping for love
Pumping for love
‘Cause when I’m thinkin’ of you
And all the things we could do
My heart is pumping for love
You left me longing for you
You left me longing for you
You left me longing for you
You left me longing for you
You left me longing for you

Samuel’s Musician Of The Week: John Williamson

This week’s award goes to John Williamson, and the feature song is Old Man Emu.

Let me tell you of an interview with an Old Man Emu
He’s got a beak and feathers and things, but the poor old fella ain’t got no wings
“Aren’t you jealous of the wedge-tail eagle?” – dom ba da littra da da da

(Spoken in tempo) “While the eagle’s flying round and round, I keep my two feet firmly on the ground
Now I can’t fly, but I’m telling you, I can run the pants off a kangaroo”.

doo dee ba doo doo doo , boo da da doot doo doo doo
He can’t fly, but I’m telling you, he can run the pants off a kangaroo.

Well he was the model for the fifty cents – oom ba da littra da da da
The designer should have had more sense – oom ba da littra da da da
“If you take a look, it’ll prove to you, ha ha ha I ran the pants off that kangaroo”.

Doo dee ba doo doo doo…Boo da da doot doo doo..
Take a look it’ll prove to you, he ran the pants off the kangaroo.

He can’t loop the loop like a cockatoo – Oom ba da littra da da da
Swoop and toss like an albatross – Oom ba da littra da da da
“You silly galah, I’m better by far, than a white cockatoo or a budgerigar;
They squeak and squawk and try to talk, why me and them’s like cheese and chalk”
Ba da da Doo dee ba doo doo doo…Boo da da doot doo doo doo
He can’t fly but I’m telling you, he can run the pants off a kangaroo…

Well the last time I saw Old Man Emu – Oom ba da littra da da da
He was chasing a female he knew – Oom ba da littra da da da
As he shot past I heard him say “She can’t fly, but I’m telling you
She could run the pants off a kangaroo”. –

Ba da da Doo dee ba doo doo doo Doo dee ba doo doo doo
She can’t fly but I’m telling you, she can run the pants off a kangaroo

Well there is a moral to this ditty – Oom ba da littra da da da
Thrush can sing but he ain’t pretty – Oom ba da littra da da da
Duck can swim, but he can’t sing, nor can the eagle on the wing
Emu can’t fly, but I’m telling you, he can run the pants off a kangaroo.

Well the kookaburra laughed and he said “It’s true, oom ba da littra da da da,
Ha Ha Ha Ha Hah Hoo, He can run the pants off a kangaroo Hoo Ha Ha Ha Ha Hah Hoo Ha Ha Ha Ha Hah”

Samuel’s Musician Of The Week: Tommy Roe

And the feature song is Dizzy. As for the video, I think this one is the best of the lot in terms of sound quality on YouTube…not much I can do about the twenty seconds of buzz at the beginning before the song starts though.

Dizzy
I’m so dizzy my head is spinning
Like a whirlpool it never ends
And it’s you girl makin’ it spin
You’re making me dizzy

First time that I saw you girl, I knew that I just had to make you mine
But it’s so hard to talk to you with fellows hangin’ round you all the time
I want you for my sweet pet, but you keep playing hard to get
I’m going round in circles all the time

Dizzy
I’m so dizzy my head is spinning
Like a whirlpool it never ends
And it’s you girl makin’ it spin
You’re making me dizzy

I finally got to talk to you and I told you just exactly how I felt
Then I held you close to me and kissed you and my heart began to melt
Girl you’ve got control on me, ’cause I’m so dizzy I can’t see
I need to call a doctor for some help

Dizzy
I’m so dizzy my head is spinning
Like a whirlpool it never ends
And it’s you girl makin’ it spin
You’re making me dizzy my head is spinning
Like a whirlpool it never ends
And it’s you girl making it spin
You’re making me dizzy
You’re making me dizzy
I’m so dizzy

Samuel’s Musicians Of The Week: Dschinghis Khan

And the feature song is Moskau, the unofficial theme song of the 1980 Moscow Olympics. I’m using the English language version of the song for the lyrics, although I do think the German version sounds better.

And yes, I am aware that Maritz posted this video here when she filled in for me last year. The song was already on my Musician(s) Of The Week waiting list at the time, so I wasn’t overly pleased about it, although I was amused when she had trouble embedding the video and ended up embedding it twice.

Here’s the song…the English language version to start with.

Moscow, queen of the Russian land,
Built like a rock to stand, proud and divine.
Moscow, your golden towers glow,
Even through ice and snow, sparkling they shine.

And every night, night, night, there is music,
Oh, every night, night, night, there is love.
And every night, night, night, there is laughter,
Here’s to you brother, hey, brother, ho!
Hey, hey, hey, hey!

Moscow, Moscow, throw your glasses at the wall,
And good fortune to us all, ho-ho-ho-ho-ho, hey!
Moscow, Moscow, join us for a kazachok,
We’ll go dancing round the clock, ha-ha-ha-ha-ha, hey!
Moscow, Moscow, drinking Vodka all night long,
Keeps you happy, makes you strong, ho-ho-ho-ho-ho, hey!
Moscow, Moscow, come and have a drink and then,
You will never leave again, ha-ha-ha-ha-ha! Hey!

Moscow, la-la-la…, ho-ho-ho-ho-ho, hey!
Moscow, Moscow, la-la-la…, ha-ha-ha-ha-ha!

Ooooh….

Moscow! Moscow!

Moscow, Moscow, take Natascha in your arms,
You’ll be captured by her charms, ho-ho-ho-ho-ho, hey!
Moscow, Moscow, she will make you understand,
Russia is a wondrous land, ha-ha-ha-ha-ha!

Moscow! Moscow!

Hey!

And the German version, complete with words I doubt that I’ll ever be able to pronounce, let alone spell.

Great song!

Samuel’s Musician Of The Week: Michael Jackson

As promised I have , for this week, suspended the randomised selection of musicians from the ever-growing waiting list so that I can give the award to Michael Jackson.

The feature song is my favourite Michael Jackson song, “Beat It”.

They told him don’t you ever come around here
Don’t wanna see your face, you better disappear
The fire’s in their eyes and their words are really clear
So beat it, just beat it

You better run, you better do what you can
Don’t wanna see no blood, don’t be a macho man
You wanna be tough, better do what you can
So beat it, but you wanna be bad

Just beat it, beat it, beat it, beat it
No one wants to be defeated
Showin’ how funky and strong is your fight
It doesn’t matter who’s wrong or right
Just beat it, beat it
Just beat it, beat it
Just beat it, beat it
Just beat it, beat it

They’re out to get you, better leave while you can
Don’t wanna be a boy, you wanna be a man
You wanna stay alive, better do what you can
So beat it, just beat it

You have to show them that you’re really not scared
You’re playin’ with your life, this ain’t no truth or dare
They’ll kick you, then they beat you,
Then they’ll tell you it’s fair
So beat it, but you wanna be bad

Just beat it, beat it, beat it, beat it
No one wants to be defeated
Showin’ how funky and strong is your fight
It doesn’t matter who’s wrong or right

Just beat it, beat it, beat it, beat it
No one wants to be defeated
Showin’ how funky and strong is your fight
It doesn’t matter who’s wrong or right

Just beat it, beat it, beat it, beat it
(beat it, beat it, beat it)
(beat it, beat it, beat it)
(beat it, beat it)
(beat it, beat it, beat it)

Beat it, beat it, beat it, beat it
No one wants to be defeated
Showin’ how funky and strong is your fight
It doesn’t matter who’s wrong or right
Just beat it, beat it, beat it, beat it
No one wants to be defeated (oh no)
Showin’ how funky and strong is your fight
It doesn’t matter who’s wrong or who’s right

Just beat it, beat it, beat it, beat it
No one wants to be defeated (oh no)
Showin’ how funky and strong is your fight
It doesn’t matter who’s wrong or right

Just beat it, beat it, beat it, beat it
No one wants to be defeated
Showin’ how funky and strong is your fight
It doesn’t matter who’s wrong or right
Just beat it, beat it

Samuel’s Musicians Of The Week: Spacehog

This week’s award goes to British band Spacehog, and the feature song is one which borrows quite successfully from The Penguin Cafe Orchestra’s “Telephone and Rubber Band”…the song is “In The Meantime”.

Incidentally, thanks to our good friends the copyright police, YouTube don’t appear to have the studio version of this song, and audio has been disabled on the one video I could find where the studio version does appear…as a soundtrack to somebody’s footage of their skiing holiday! As such, today’s video comes from DailyMotion and loads more slowly than a YouTube video would.

Spacehog- In the Meantime
by Tunashaker

ohoooohoooooooohooooooooooh
ohoooohoooooooohooooooooooh
ohoooohoooooooohooooooooooh
ohohooooohooooooooooooooooh

And in the end we shall achieve in time
The thing they call divine
And all the stars will shine for me
When all is well and well is all for all
Forever after
We’re living in the meantime wait and see

We love the all the all of you
Where lands are green and skies are blue
When all in all we’re just like you
We love the all of you

And when I cry for me I cry for you
With tears of holy joy
For all the days still to come
And did I ever say I’d never play
Or fly toward the sun
Living in the meantime something’s gone

We love the all the all of you
Where lands are green and skies are blue
When all in all we’re just like you
We love the all of you

Well that sounds fine so I’ll see you sometime
Give my love to the future of the humankind
Okay, okay, it’s not okay.
While it’s on my mind there’s a girl that fits the crime
For a future love dream that I’m still to find
But in the meantime

We love the all the all of you
Where lands are green and skies are blue
When all in all we’re just like you
We love the all of you

We love the all the all of you
Our lands are green and skies are blue

Just like you
Just like you
Just like, just like
Just like you
Just like you
Just like you
Just like, just like
Just like you

Samuel’s Musicians Of The Week: Sting and The Police

This week’s award goes to Sting and The Police, and the feature song is “Walking On The Moon”.

Giant steps are what you take
Walking on the moon
I hope my legs don’t break
Walking on the moon
We could walk forever
Walking on the moon
We could live together
Walking on, walking on the moon

Walking back from your house
Walking on the moon
Walking back from your house
Walking on the moon
Feet they hardly touch the ground
Walking on the moon
My feet don’t hardly make no sound
Walking on, walking on the moon

Some may say
I’m wishing my days away, no way
And if it’s the price I pay, some say
Tomorrow’s another day, you’ll stay
I may as well play

Giant steps are what you take
Walking on the moon
I hope my legs don’t break
Walking on the moon
We could walk forever
Walking on the moon
We could be together
Walking on, walking on the moon

Some may say
I’m wishing my days away, no way
And if it’s the price I pay, some say
Tomorrow’s another day, you’ll stay
I may as well play

Keep it up (repeat to end)

Samuel’s Musicians Of The Week: The Cars

The award this week goes to The Cars, and the feature song is one with an appropriate title for a band with such a name. It is “Drive”.

Who’s gonna tell you when,
It’s too late?
Who’s gonna tell you things,
Aren’t so great?

You cant go on, thinkin’,
Nothing’s wrong, whoa ho…,
Who’s gonna drive you home,
tonight?

Who’s gonna pick you up,
When you fall?
Who’s gonna hang it up,
When you call?

Who’s gonna pay attention,
To your dreams?
And who’s gonna plug their ears,
When you scream?

You can’t go on, thinkin’
Nothing’s wrong, whoa ho…,
(who’s gonna drive you)
(who’s gonna drive you)
Who’s gonna drive you home, tonight?
(who’s gonna drive you home)

(bye baby)
(bye baby)
(bye baby)
(bye baby)

Who’s gonna hold you down,
When you shake?
Who’s gonna come around,
When you break?

You can’t go on, thinkin’,
Nothing’s wrong, whoa ho…,
(Who’s gonna drive you)
(who’s gonna drive you)
Who’s gonna drive you home, tonight?
(who’s gonna drive you home)

Ho…, you know you can’t go on, thinkin’,
Nothing’s wrong,
(Who’s gonna drive you)
(Who’s gonna drive you home)
Who’s gonna drive you home, tonight?

(bye baby)
(bye baby)
(bye baby)

Samuel’s Musicians Of The Week: Franz Ferdinand

This week’s award goes to the Scottish band Franz Ferdinand, and the feature song is one which doesn’t get enough attention, and is in my view their best song, Come On Home.

Although my lover lives
In a place that I can’t live
I kind of find I like a life this lonely
It rips and pierces me
In places I can’t see
I love the rip of nerves
The rip that wakes me
So I’m dissatisfied
I love dissatisfied
I love to feel there’s always more that I need

So come on home
So come on home
So come on – home home

You’re where you want to be
I’m where I want to be
Come on we’re chasing everything we’ve ever wanted
Replace you easily
Replace pathetically
I flirt with every flighty thing that falls my way
But how I needed you
When I needed you
Let’s not forget
We are so strong
So bloody strong

Come on home
So come on home
So come on – home home

Blue light falls upon your perfect skin
Falls and you draw back again
Falls and this is how I fell
And I cannot forget
And I cannot forget

Come on home
So come on home
But don’t forget to ring

Samuel’s Musician Of The Week: Paul Kelly

This week’s award goes to Paul Kelly, and I have been waiting anxiously for the random number generator to pick this song ever since Jim Ball moved from 2GB to 2UE back in March last year.

The feature song this week is Jim Ball’s theme song, Paul Kelly’s “Sydney From A 747”.

Have you ever seen Sydney from a 747 at night? (yeah)
Sydney shines such a beautiful light
And I can see Bondi through my window way off to the right (yeah)
And the curling waves on a distant break
And the sleeping city just about to wake
Have you ever seen Sydney from a 747 at night?

Now the red roofs are catching the first rays of the morning sun (yeah)
My eyes are full of sand from my midnight run
And the captain says belt up now we’ll be touching down in ten (yeah)
So I press my seat and I straighten up
I fold my tray and I stash my cup
As the red roofs are catching the first rays of the morning sun

Have you ever fallen for a girl with different coloured eyes? (yeah)
And sent her letters with one or two lies
Have you ever longed to see the sun fall where it used to rise? (yeah)
And quit your job on the spot
Bought that ticket yeah spent the lot
Have you ever fallen for a girl with different coloured eyes?

Have you ever seen Sydney from a 747 at night?
Have you ever seen Sydney from a 747 at night?
Have you ever seen Sydney from a 747 at night?
Me I’ve never seen Dallas from a DC9

I just love that cheeky little line at the end. That subtle wit is a great match for Jim’s show.

Samuel’s Musicians Of The Week

It’s back, hopefully on a regular (read: weekly) basis, but that all depends on my ability to actually remember to write the article each week.

This week’s award goes to Duran Duran, and the feature song is “(Reach Up For The) Sunrise”.

Now the time has come (has come)
The music’s between us
Though the night seems young (seems young)
Is at an end
Only change will bring (will bring)
You out of the darkness
In this moment everything (everything) is born again

Reach up for the sunrise
Put your hands into the big sky
You can touch the sunrise
Feel the new day enter your life

Reach up for the sunrise
Put your hands into the big sky
You can touch the sunrise
Feel the new day enter your life

Now the fireball burns (ball burns)
We go round together
As the planet turns (turns) into the light
Something more than dreams to (more than dreams)
Watch out for each other
‘Cos we know what it means (what it means) to be alive

Reach up for the sunrise
Put your hands into the big sky
You can touch the sunrise
Feel the new day enter your life

Reach up for the sunrise
Put your hands into the big sky
You can touch the sunrise
Feel the new day enter your life

Feel the new day enter your life
Feel the new day

Reach up for the sunrise
Put your hands into the big sky
You can touch the sunrise
Feel the new day enter your life

Reach up for the sunrise
Put your hands into the big sky
You can touch the sunrise
Feel the new day enter your life

Reach up for the sunrise
Put your hands into the big sky
You can touch the sunrise
Feel the new day enter your life

Happy Australia Day

The Australian Flag

Normally on Australia Day I would post the national anthem here for your enjoyment, but this year I feel compelled to post a different patriotic song: Beccy Cole’s “Poster Girl”. It is incredibly moving to hear the pride and patriotism in Beccy’s voice as she sings this song.

You won’t listen to my songs any more
You ripped my poster off the wall
‘Cause I’m the singer that went to the war
You see no good in me at all

Well pardon me if I believe
I haven’t got it wrong
And before you turn your back on me
I’ll sing you one more song

‘Cause I shook hands with a digger
on the wrong side of the world
With a wife at home who holds her breath
and brand new baby girl
And the digger fights for freedom
in a job that must be done
And I let go of his hand
so proud to be Australian

And if unlike me you feel no pride at all
Then go ahead and take me off your wall
’cause I’d prefer to be a poster girl
on the wrong side of the world

And I’m just the girl who sings the crazy songs
not qualified to sit and judge
I’ve been right and I know I’ve been wrong
But I’m for peace and I’m for love

And I admire the burning fire
that causes you to fight
I only wish the wrong side of the world
had the same right.

’cause I listened to the wisdom
of the Aussie Brigadier
He spoke of widows and of orphans
and the need to dry their tears
And he leads the fight for freedom
in a job that must be done
And I’ve never been more proud
to say that I’m Australian

And if unlike me you feel no pride at all
Then go ahead and take me off your wall
’cause I’d prefer to be a poster girl
on the wrong side of the world

Maybe I’m naive to think we all could get along
But sir I read your words and all I ask
is hear my song…

I shook hands with a digger
on the wrong side of the world
With a wife at home who holds her breath
and brand new baby girl
And the digger fights for freedom
in a job that must be done
And I’ve never be more proud
to say that I’m Australian

And if unlike me you feel no pride at all
Then go ahead and take me off your wall
’cause I’d prefer to be a poster girl
on the wrong side of the world

I’m so proud to be a poster girl
on the wrong side of the world

By the way, this post doubles as the return of Samuel’s Musician(s) Of The Week, so on that basis Beccy is the musician of the week.

Happy Australia Day!

Samuel’s Musicians Of The Week

It has been a few weeks since I last did this, and I’ve decided not to bother with catching up on the missing weeks. I will, however, pick up where I left off, and as promised purposefully pick a song from the ever-growing list rather than allow the random number generator to choose for me.

As I said a few weeks ago, Michael Thompson left 2CC for 2GB and he has been intermittently bugging me to give the award to The Bee Gees. As you wish Michael.

The feature song is First Of May.

When I was small, and christmas trees were tall,
We used to love while others used to play.
Don’t ask me why, but time has passed us by,
Some one else moved in from far away.

Now we are tall, and christmas trees are small,
And you don’t ask the time of day.
But you and I, our love will never die,
But guess we’ll cry come first of May.

The apple tree that grew for you and me,
I watched the apples falling one by one.
And I recall the moment of them all,
The day I kissed your cheek and you were mine.

Now we are tall, and christmas trees are small,
And you don’t ask the time of day.
But you and I, our love will never die,
But guess we’ll cry come first of May.

When I was small, and christmas trees were tall,
Do do do do do do do do do…
Don’t ask me why, but time has passed us by,
Some one else moved in from far away.

Samuel’s Musicians Of The Week

This week the award goes to Supertramp, and the feature song is “Dreamer”.

Dreamer
You know you are a dreamer
Well can you put your hands in your head, oh no!
I said dreamer
You’re nothing but a dreamer
Well can you put your hands in your head, oh no!
I said “Far out, – What a day, a year, a life it is”
You know, – Well you know you had it comin’ to you
Now there’s not a lot I can do

Dreamer
You stupid little dreamer;
So now you put your head in your hands, oh no!

I said “Far out, – What a day, a year, a life it is!”
You know, – Well you know you had it comin’ to you
Now there’s not a lot I can do

Work it out someday

If I could see something-
You can see anything you want boy
If I could be someone-
You can be anyone, celebrate boy
if I could do something-
You can do something
If I could do anything-
But can you do something out of this world?

A-aah-aaaah
Take a dream on a Sunday
Well take a life, take a holiday
Take a lie, take a dreamer
Dream, dream, dream, dream, dream, dream, dream, dream along…

Dream on, dream on, dream along
Come on and dream on, dream along
(Move it on)
Come on and dream on, dream along
Come on and dream on, dream along

D-d-d-d-d-d-dreamer
You know you are a dreamer
Well can you put your hands in your head, oh no!
I said dreamer
You’re nothing but a dreamer
Well can you put your hands in your head, oh no!
OH NO!

Samuel’s Musicians Of The Week

This week the award goes to The Veronicas, and the feature song is Hook Me Up. I first heard this song on 2CC when Stuart Bocking played it after interviewing the band…it sounded absolutely awful on AM radio, which struck me as a bit odd because most of the music I like sounds great on AM radio. This song, whilst not one of them, sounds quite good as purchased from iTunes.

It is also nice to find a band who release their music on YouTube and allow embedding of it. It makes my job a lot easier, and works well as a promotional tool for them. If only I could say the same for Universal Music who seem to think that allowing embedding of their music will cause the planet to turn in to a bowl of cereal.

Incidentally, this song sounds better in stereo than it does in mono. The sound on the YouTube video doesn’t quite do it justice.

I’m tired of my life
I feel so in between
I’m sick of all my friends, girls can be so mean
I feel like throwin’ out everything I wear
I’m startin’ over new
Coz I’m not even there

Sometimes (sometimes)
I wanna get away some place
But I don’t wanna stay too long
Sometimes (sometimes)
I wanna brand new day
Try to fit in where I don’t belong

Hooooooooook
Hook me up
I wanna feel the rain in my hair
Hooooooooook
Hook me up
Where should we go I don’t even care
Anywhere is good enough
Hook me up
Hook me up

I like the lights turned out
The sound of closing doors
I’m not like other girls
Who always feel so sure
Of everything they are
Of what they’re gonna be
Sometimes I’m just a girl
Stuck inside of me; of me

Sometimes (sometimes)
I wanna disappear some place
But I don’t wanna stay too long
Sometimes (sometimes)
I’m feelin’ so alone (I’m feelin’ so alone)
Tryin’ to fit in where I don’t belong

Hooooooooook
Hook me up
I wanna feel the rain in my hair
Hooooooooook
Hook me up
Where should we go I don’t even care
Anywhere is good enough
Hook me up
Hook me up
Anywhere is good enough
Hook me up

Their gonna crash and burn
I’m gonna find a way
Nothin’ left to say

Hooooooooook
Hook me up
I wanna feel the rain in my hair
Hooooooooook
Hook me up
Where should we go I don’t even care (I don’t even care)
Hooooooooook
Hook me up
I wanna feel the rain in my hair
Hooooooooook
Hook me up
Where should we go I don’t even care (I don’t even care)

Anywhere is good enough
Hook me up
Hook me up
Hook me up
