I note from Mark Parton’s twitter feed that he has retired UK television talk show host Michael Parkinson joining him at some stage this week. I probably won’t be in a position to listen to it live, so I hope they podcast it.
Thanks to those who have posted supportive comments since the news of my departure from 2CC.
They have been approved for display on this site, but I don’t see them.
[..]
In any event I will be away for a few days but now that I have more time on my hands I will be posting more often on this blog.
[..]
I won’t make any comment on the article in The Canberra Times (no link) now, but will probably do so in the near future.
Well, that’s some good news. I look forward to reading your thoughts Mike…oh, and by the way, I can see the comments, you might need to clear your browser’s cache in order to see them.
Thanks for the link from your site Mike.
Also thank you to everyone who has emailed me about this (both Jeffreys departure and the update to his website). The emails are coming out my ears at the moment but I will reply to each and every one of them.
It is starting to get on my nerves that I can not post anything here for a week and I’m bound to get an email enquring about my health (and not just from a spammer offering to sell me some magic cure in exchange for my bank account details), but if the emails come, there’s bound to be others wondering.
Right now my Internet connection has been shaped (read: slowed down to a tad faster than dialup) as I’ve exceeded my monthly download quota (first time for everything eh?) and in order to make the Internet even remotely bearable I’ve disabled images on all websites by default (except for Seek which seems to have issues with the “apply for a job” form not submitting if the images haven’t loaded, and a couple other sites on a case-by-case basis) and even then I’m using the Internet less due to the annoying nature of the issue.
All goes back to normal in about four or five days, but for now I’m posting here less, because I have less to post.
Unfortunately this means that photos of the Belconnen Bus Interchange won’t be uploaded for a few days as I don’t feel like sacrificing the rest of the Internet for the next four or five days while the images upload.
On the bright side though, I can still get the KXNT webstream (it its 32kbps glory) without a problem, and it’s sounding better than usual at the moment as the ad replacement (where ads for the broadcast station are replaced by other ads on the webstream) doesn’t appear to be working, meaning that I get to hear the normal ads and promos from KXNT and don’t lose bits of sentences when the ad replacement kicks in at the wrong time. Oh, and unfortunately Rush Limbaugh is taking the next two days off (pity as I’ve been enjoying his show when I haven’t been on a 2am walk) but he has Mark Steyn filling in for him tomorrow (Friday 2am-5am Canberra time) which will be good, I haven’t heard Mark for a few months.
As I am going to be extremely busy with other commitments over the next few days, I’m making a few changes to the Easter weekend schedule for this blog.
Friday Funnies will be moved to today.
Samuel’s Musician(s) Of The Week will be moved to Monday.
The Weekly Poll will be published today.
Good Friday, Easter Saturday and Easter Sunday and Easter Monday will primarily consist of pre-written, scheduled content, mostly videos. I will use the weekend to try to clear the smallish backlog of stuff that I’ve been meaning to write about, but haven’t found the time to do so.
I will be around to reply to comments, but for the most part this blog will be in automation mode over the weekend. I will return to regular blogging on Tuesday, as I intend on relaxing on Monday after my nine days of busyness which wraps up with a climax of busyness on Sunday.
I wish you all a wonderful Easter weekend, and safe travels if you happen to be travelling.
Padders informs me by email that The Hutch has been closed, and has been replaced by The Right Aussie.
The move is apparently so that Padders can “pitch to a more targeted audience” with his musings. I assume, from that statement and his recent posts, that the new site allows him to write more from a conservative angle, on a site which unashamedly targets a conservative audience. I always thought that The Hutch targeted a conservative audience, but I can see how The Right Aussie targets it better.
So far I’m impressed with what I have seen on The Right Aussie and I look forward to seeing more posts there. Bookmark it or add it to your feed reader folks, it’s well worth the read!
Samuel’s Blog is now going in to maintenance mode while it moves servers and I clean up a few bits and pieces.
The photo gallery will be offline for a bit longer while I sort out a few issues with it.
Update 6pm: We’re now running off the new server. A minor glitch in the process means that a number of files are still copying across, however all “core” files are in place and the site should be operating normally. End Update
Update 10:30pm: All files which reside directly in the wp-content directory have been uploaded. This is the vast majority of general images and audio files. Files belonging to specific galleries or categories which were allocated their own directory are still being uploaded in alphabetical order.
At this time all Editorial Echoes and Samuel’s Persiflage files are offline.
Approximately 1000 files totalling about 1.5GB have been uploaded to the wp-content directory. A further 2300 or so files remain. End Update
Update 5:30amAll Samuel’s Persiflage and Editorial Echoes files are now online (they have been for an hour give or take a few minutes but I’ve been too busy with my AIR News commitments to notice) and most other files are online as well. Approximately 2,400 files have been uploaded, with another 900 or so to go.
The photo gallery will be offline until further notice. End Update
Update 7:15am: Files and downloads should now all be available, however due to file permission issues some files or pages might not be working properly. I’ll work on it when I’ve had some sleep. In the meantime, please email me if you run in to any problems with the site. End Update
I’m taking a few days off from the blog and other forms of communication. I am effectively in a full “do not disturb” mode and will be for a few days, possibly the rest of the week while I take some time to escape from the inane trials and tribulations of this planet.
This means that I am not accepting phone calls, emails or blog comments. Phone calls are being diverted to voicemail, emails are receiving an auto-response, and blog comments are being held for moderation.
When I return to the land of communication, I will sort through whatever calls, emails and blog comments I have. Until then, enjoy your time in my absence.
Hello and the much goodly mornings to the people of doing read today.
Mr. Samuel has done ask of me to be doing write to you today as I have not been of do write in times of recent and he thinks of concern for Mother of Russia which may be shared of by readings.
I am the happy for Mother of Russia who is at her home again now but is still being looked after by nice Uncle Boris who is of staying in house after trip from other side of Russia.
The hospital did do of say that Mother of Russia made mix of accident of the medicines for her of regular taking and the tablets of give to for nice pet mouse Squeelivich who is pet of mine but does live with Mother of Russia as can not be coming to Australia for law of customs.
Mother had been going to have operation for direction and correcting of bones in arm shoulder of left and right in weeks coming and did have operation before instead as while she was in the hospital.
Doctor Vladimir Strosnichkov has say that Mother of Russia is going to do recover of good and soon if mediciesnes are kept on regular for days of coming, and then Nice Uncle Boris will be able to do of go to home on other side of Russia on Tuesday or Wednesday in middle of week which next is come.
Until that time of do does come I will be still doing ring to Mother of Russia on tephelephone so that for doing sing of to over tephlephone of international callings.
I am do hope that you are having day of much lovely and wonderful.
At 4:13am today, Cooma was Australia’s coldest place according to WeatherZone:
I can’t recall any other time where I’ve spotted Cooma or immediate surrounds listed as the coldest place in the country. I’ve seen places up in the mountains listed as the coldest, but not Cooma.
HONG KONG — Cathay Pacific has apologized for embarrassing a customer whose anguish after missing her flight was captured on video by an airline employee and posted on the Internet.
The Hong Kong airline said in a statement to The Associated Press on Thursday that the worker who filmed the video has been disciplined but that another person posted the footage on YouTube, a video-sharing Web site.
The three-minute video shot on a mobile phone shows a woman wailing, throwing herself on the floor, banging on an airport counter and trying to barge through a closed boarding gate at the Hong Kong International Airport on Feb. 4 after missing a flight to San Francisco.
“They have no compassion. The plane hasn’t even left, and they’ve shut the gate. They’re crazy! They’re crazy!” the woman shouted.
[..]
Cathay said it had apologized to the woman “for the inconvenience and embarrassment she may have suffered as a result” and offered to upgrade her seats on her next trip and reimburse her for frequent flyer miles she used for upgrades on recent journeys.
The airline said the woman has not sought compensation from the company.
As far as I’m concerned she should consider herself lucky that she wasn’t flying with EasyJet who regularly film customer tantrums for the television show Airline which is internationally syndicated.
The only difference between this video and every other video of people having a tantrum in public is that this one spread quickly on YouTube and was then picked up by the broadcast media and appeared on almost every news programme on the planet, whereas most sit on YouTube with minimal interest from anyone.
Madam, think about this more entrepreneurially, you could make a fortune out of television interviews about this video…or perhaps start a successful anger management course. Possibilities galore here…although if you’re really embarrassed about it, well you’ll know not to do that again in a public place.
For now anyway. I have been quite unwell for the last few days which is the reason for my absence here.
I have a few things to write here but most of them have a lower priority than some other work that I’m doing so it may still be a tad quiet here for a day or so.
In the meantime I have corrected link number three in one of the recent Global Warming posts as I managed to link to the world temperature graph twice, at the expense of the article which I quoted from fairly extensively. Thanks to Brad for pointing out the error.
The photo gallery is also back online now. It’s been off the air for a bit over a month and I kept putting off working out what was wrong with it. I had a dream about the main problem yesterday afternoon, so I decided to fix it, only to find another problem…half the galleries were not being recognised…simple file permission problem though, easily fixed.
That reminds me that I still haven’t made the photos of Googong Dam from April publicly visible yet. I should do that soon…but a number of photos need captions and I need to write a blog post to go with it, so it won’t be today.
More later, right now I have a headache to deal with.
Sadly I won’t have time to get any of these articles finished this morning, but I’m working on them and hope to have them to you soon:
The Bureau of Meteorology claimed that last year was hot in Canberra, but I’ve been looking at the figures, and they seem to disagree with the Bureau.
The “Global Economic Crisis” seems to be having a very sad side-effect…it’s difficult to go a day without a story from somewhere in the world about a suicide or murder-suicide shortly after someone loses their job.
And with more people apparently out of work, are recruitment companies becoming sloppier and slacker with their job advertisements simply because they know that people will apply?
Surprisingly (some people should sit down before reading this) I actually like a handful of the songs in Triple J’s “Hot 100” this year.
All that and more, still to come on Samuel’s Blog.
It looks like we’re having some connectivity issues with Telstra’s network. This may be preventing people on Bigpond and other Telstra connections from viewing the website, and is definitely preventing this server from connecting to the Bigpond mail server. As such, any users registering with a Bigpond email address will not receive their registration confirmation email until after the problem is fixed.
Our network provider is liaising with Telstra to fix the problem, hopefully it will be fixed soon.
Davky, if you read this, could you please let me know, in a comment, if the bizarre email which I just received from you is legitimate. You needn’t go in to details in the comments if you don’t want to.
Personally I think the email deserves the attention of Ruhtra Tolemac, but I’ll wait for your reply.
Update:Crisis averted, although Ms. Tolemac may still need to visit Nigeria. End Update
