More Radio Oddities

November 6th, 2005 at 09:24pm

Once again today was another odd day on 2CC. Weekend Magazine vanished into thin air, and listeners were subjected to the 2UE Sydney centric gardening show. Glen Wheeler seemed a bit more comfortable today but he still isn’t as entertaining as George Moore & Paul B. Kidd. Yesterday I started to think he had good taste in music, but he pulled a song right out of left field this afternoon that forced me to turn off the radio for a few minutes to avoid “sqealing and screeching with musical acompaniment”. If I wanted to hear that I would turn on an FM music station.

I am still very disappointed at the changes 2UE made to the schedule, and I’m not overly impressed with the absence of local programming between midday & 2pm which forced a Sydney gardening show through the Canberra airwaves. It is possible that Mike Frame had other commitments, but that gardening show was nowhere near as interesting as David Young’s Garden is.

They really made a right mess of it ….. and that Sydney gardening show is sooooooooo boring !

Yes, even the celebrity gardener seemed completely uninterested in gardening….I do have to wonder about a station that picks it’s own people as the special guests (celebrity gardener was John Mangos).

I’ve recieved a comment by email from the contact form (link at top of every page):

“Sydney people now have a real alternative for weekend listening. 2GB and 2UE had identical programmes in the morning. Gardening and Realty. 2UE have now given us an alternative. George and Paul will do well and give Glen Wheeler a fair go. He was popular on 2GB.”

I think it is pretty evident that Glen was popular on 2GB as he has certainly made a lot of people change from 2GB to 2UE (the phone calls from ex-2GB listeners proves it). He probably will settle in, he did well filling in for George Gibson on weekend New Day Australia earlier in the year, but he seems to be bringing a mid-dawn program to the afternoon at the moment…once he fixes that and settles in, I’m sure he’ll be fine.

I’m still not pleased with the fact that Canberrans don’t get to hear George and Paul any more, but if Glen settles in and 2CC have local programming from Midday-2PM I’m sure I’ll get over it. The 2UE webstream is always there I guess, but not really as convenient or as easy to listen to for extended periods of time as the radio.

Ultimately 2UE have to look after themselves first and the SC Syndication subscribers later because without a 2UE there wouldn’t be anything for SC Syndication subscribers to get from Sydney.
