Peter Leonard Retiring?
February 9th, 2007 at 11:49pm
I received an interesting tip today claiming that Peter Leonard is about to retire and Phil Small is set to take over his position. Whilst I don’t doubt for one moment that Peter Leonard is about ready to retire, I do have a small doubt about Phil Small taking over as anchor, mainly because Phil is very knowledgeable when it comes to sport, and if he were to take over as anchor, somebody would have to fill his void.
If Phil were to take over as anchor, I suppose he could continue to oversee sport, but somebody else would have to do most of the sport reporting. I also have a slight niggling doubt that Phil would want to take over as anchor…I’m sure he’d do a great job, but I’m not convinced that he would want to do it.
If Tony Lynas was still with Win, he would have the anchor job in a flash, but he isn’t there, and Jessica Good is his replacement. I am getting the impression that Jessica’s current fill-in anchor role is a trial for when Peter Leonard does retire, and so far I think she has put in a solid effort and, if Phil Small declines the anchor role, she will most likely get it.
Anyway, thank you to the nice person who sent me the tip, it is most appreciated.

Here’s hoping Phil Small declines !

Why’s that John? Not a fan of Phil? Fan of Jessica? Just prefer Phil to stick to sport?

Between you, me, and the fencepost Samuel, I wish Phil would get a job elsewhere.
He’s been hanging around WIN like a bad penny for over
17 years now !
Time for him to move on.

Fair enough…that’s a very long time in one job these days!
In some ways I think it’s a pity that Win don’t televise any of the local sport, Phil has proven himself to be a good commentator covering the Raiders’ NRL matches for 2CC and I think that would be a good job for him. I’m sure some of the local sports would love to get some television coverage.

Not that it really matters, because I avoid WIN news like the plague, but Phil Small has the most annoying voice in news.
The pitch of his voice when he is reading the news grates on me, especially how he ends a sentence with an upwards inflection.
Annoying!!! Hope he doesn’t get it though. Just means he’ll be on TV more and I’d have more chance of seeing him….

Precisely why I’d like to see him ‘move on’ Phil !
It’s not only the tone of his voice, but I get the overall impression
of his on-camera performances being delivered with an ‘air of
arrogance’. ( Quite a contrast to the ‘humble’ voice of Peter Leonard ).

That should be “Mick”, not “Phil” .

On the topic of voices, I like listening to Janelle Bloom on the 2UE
Sunday afternoon ‘cooking’ programme with Glenn Wheeler.
I’m not the least bit interested in the cooking, but I find Janelle’s
voice rather pleasant. As a matter of fact she sounds better
on the radio than on television.

I find Phil’s voice to be more like a sport commentator than a newsreader, but I let it go during the sport segment due to his knowledge of sport.
I’m certainly warming to the idea of him not being Win’s anchor though!

Ms. Saly (can’t remember her fist name…but I know her last name is spelled that way) from CommSec Finance is much the same. She appears on Channel Nine’s morning news but sounds better on 2UE when she appears on John Stanley’s show.

Yes, it’s interesting.
Another reason I’m not too keen on watching Janelle on TV is
because everybody in the studio seems to be about a foot
taller than her – including the women !
