New Day and 2UE’s Melbourne Cup Newlyweds

November 4th, 2006 at 12:20am

The next few days on 2UE will be interesting…John Kerr is back in the country, and logically should be on New Day Australia right now…but he isn’t, and that’s because one of 2UE’s recently married people, Stuart Bocking, has taken leave to attend the Melbourne Cup, so John will be filling in for him on the weekday edition of New Day Australia until at least Wednesday.

Clinton Maynard is also on leave, so Clive Robertson is filling in for John Kerr this weekend…a lovely pleasant surprise…and I seem to recall that last time I spoke to him on New Day, I promised to call him again when he is on New Day again…looks like I have a task.

John Stanley is getting married this weekend, and is having his honeymoon in Melbourne for the Melbourne Cup. This probably means that Murray Olds will be filling in for him, although it would be nice to have John Mangos back for a change…but he fills in for Glenn Wheeler on the weekend now.

In semi-related news, this year will more than likely be the first time since 2003 that I have been away from home for the Melbourne Cup.

That damn Clive Robertson ! Didn’t they boot that clown out yet ?

  • 2. the_total_cynic  |  November 4th, 2006 at 7:09 am

And congrats. to John Stanley. He will now be able to refer to his ‘wife’, instead of that most boring of all words – “partner” .

You’re a man (or a woman) of strong convictions Cynic.

  • 4. the_total_cynic  |  November 4th, 2006 at 10:33 am

As for Robertson – suggest he be tarred and feathered and shipped out of town in the back of a Black & Gold removal van.

I like Clive Robertson…odd man but very interesting.

the_total_cynic is indeed totally cynical … I am prepared to put up with hm until such time as links to odd sculptures are posted.

Where are you going to be for the Melbourne Cup Samuel? Are you going to John Stanley’s wedding?

    Is Stanley’s fiance’s surname Livingston?

  • 7. Roger Mellie  |  November 5th, 2006 at 1:38 am

Yes! I wonder about the total cynics views on cats Loki.

I wonder if Stanley ever watched My Three Sons?

Maybe her surname may also be Kubrik.

Yes Mr Mellie, Cats and Uncovered Meat have been in the news a bit lately, so I can only assume the “cynic” would indeed have an opinon.

Samuel, we would like to know Mrs Stanley’s former identity, or is the announcer now known as “John Stanley-Kubrick”?

In other talkback radio news, it appears an antagonist tried to drop a big rock on Alan Jones’ head:

    http://www.news.com.au/story/0,23599,20702520-2,00.html

RADIO host Alan Jones has survived a rock attack while being driven on a Melbourne freeway.

Jones, who had flown to Melbourne to watch his horse Get Square in yesterday’s Derby, was sleeping in the back of his hire car early yesterday on the Tullamarine Freeway when a rock, dropped from an overpass, shattered the vehicle’s windscreen.

“I thought a bomb went off,” Jones said.

The car swerved after the impact.

Too bad Jones survived the rock attack !

  • 11. Loki  |  November 5th, 2006 at 10:14 am

“I think I would have been killed had it not been a brand-new car,” Jones said.

“I was sitting in the back having a snooze because it had been a big day.”

Jones touched down at Essendon Airport in his private jet in the early hours of yesterday. The rock attack happened about 2.45am.

The broadcaster, in Melbourne to watch his horse Get Square in the Derby, had been in Queensland delivering the Bradman oration.

The incident was reported to police.

It is unclear whether Jones was intentionally targeted or whether he was victim of a a random attack.

The incident came less than two weeks after the release of a controversial biography on Jones that outed him as a homosexual.

Jonestown, written by ABC journalist Chris Masters, became a best-seller in just one week, grossing $600,000.

Jones returned to work at Sydney radio station 2GB last Monday after taking a week’s holiday that coincided with the book going on sale.

He had been travelling in a BMW 7 Series sedan, a range-topping model fitted with electronic stability control, anti-lock brakes and traction control.

Thanks for the update Loki. Rumour has it that Jones was listening to Laura Branigan’s ‘Gloria’ minus Laura Branigan on a pink iPod mini and that the rock was dropped by a disgruntled Nick Farr-Jones.

  • 13. Loki  |  November 5th, 2006 at 2:10 pm

Perusing the archives of this blog Mr Mellie, I see there are numerous references to big rocks being dropped on people’s heads and supposed subliminal influences (assertions in the past that I have effectivey debunked).

I do, however, wonder at this eerie occurence – an apparently random rock attack at a sworn enemy of the 2UE stable who goes head-to-head with John Laws.

Could it be that some very odd soul has been somehow inspired to carry out the attack due to the disparaging comments about Mr Jones and the repeated references to “big rocks being dropped on people’s heads” in this blog?

Meanwhile, Samuel was somewhat coy about how this Tuesday “will more than likely be the first time since 2003 that I have been away from home for the Melbourne Cup”.

I hate to be the one to put two and two together, but …

“Jones, who had flown to Melbourne to watch his horse Get Square….. ”

Seems somebody tried to GET SQUARE with Jones . hahaha.

I don’t add up to four!

Very amusing notion, but I can’t throw stones or rocks all the way from Canberra to Melbourne and surrounds, and hence I don’t add up to four, especially considering that three of my sum amount to an alibi.

This Tuesday, whilst it would be interesting to be in Melbourne and spot John Stanley and his wife (I don’t know her name…and I doubt it’s Kubrick…but I may suggest it in a congratulatory letter) as well as Stuart Bocking who seems to be on a working holiday in Melbourne, reporting for 2UE and other Southern Cross owned radio stations, but alas I shall be at work, and will most likely scan the radio dial just before the Cup to see what each station is doing…I will then settle on 2CC or 2CA for Southern Cross’ excellent coverage.

As for Mr. Jones, I hope he is feeling well and is able to be on-air tomorrow morning…it might be worth a listen to see if he tries to blame someone for it.

Good to hear you are not involved in any way Samuel, but there were some very odd parallels dating back some months.

No doubt there will be reports of a shadowy figure resembling Mike Carleton lurking around a grassy knolll brandishing a big rock …

Moving right along, if John Stanley married Tess Livingston of The Courier Mail in Brisbane the headline would be “Stanley meets Livingston”.

Perhaps, if this was the case, they could honeymoon in deepest darkest Africa!
