Silly Cyclist
March 3rd, 2007 at 02:30pm
And good afternoon yet again Glenn,
Please tell me this cyclist being hit in the Airport Tunnel is just a really really bad early April Fools Day joke…why the hell would anybody ride a bicycle on that road…I dare say that most people try to avoid driving on that road if they can, and they've got a mass of plastic and metal to crumple and protect them.
I've avoided making any quips about the cyclist not being in his or her right mind because, quite clearly, they lack one.
On the plus side, that IQ will be no loss.
Regards,
Samuel Gordon-Stewart

Hi Samuel (and Glenn),
Sorry to ask a silly question, but I’m only a very new reader of Samuel’s Blog.
Whom is Glenn? Is Glenn a radio personality in your area that I am not able to pick up? Or a regular contributor? Or a friend? Or am I able to pick up Glenn?
Regarding the airport tunnel Samuel, are you talking about the one in Hong Kong? I believe that it is closed down one morning each year for a foot/bicycle race.
Either way, I again feel like I have no contact with the real “finger on the pulse” of the media other than you. In my experience you seem to be two steps ahead of other local news sources.
If, however, this cyclist thing or the Glenn personality are private – I’m sorry. Sometimes I’m a bit too inquisitive for my own good.
Thanks Samuel.
Ham.

Glenn is Glenn Wheeler, weekend afternoon presenter on 2UE and 2CC. He was referring to some breaking news that a cyclist had been hit in Sydney’s airport tunnel.
I’m considering adding something to the template which briefly explains these cryptic messages to Glenn/John/Stuart/etc so that people know that they are contributions to talkback radio.
In the meantime, for further information on the Talkback Emails category, see here.

For the record, I got an email back from Glenn saying “yes, yes, and …….YES !!!!!!!”
I think we have it almost right here in Canberra with our combination of bicycle lanes, and bicycle paths…I do, however, think that during peak hour (especially on Northbourne Avenue), cyclists should be allowed to use the footpath, I think it should be converted to a part-time bike path.

Your sympathy for this cyclist and his family amazes me, Sam.
Next time I bet he will go back to using his enviromentally unfriendly car to get around!

Riding a bicycle through Sydney’s airport tunnel is stupidity at its best!

So, should you get hit by a car the next time you are on the road taking storm pictures, instead of giving you sympathy and well wishes, we should dismiss you as being stupid?
Got it.

Ongoing pest Ismail has sent me another one of his emails requesting that I ban all and sundry from this website, including myself. Somewhere in the email he made a comment which I can’t reprint as it may become a clear contempt of court, but the gist of it was that the cyclist was in the right, the motorist was wrong, and “How dare you judge some as of low IQ just because they ride a bike!”.
Ismail, the airport tunnel is barely wide enough for the motorised vehicles that travel through it, any sane cyclist wouldn’t go near it. I would imagine that the motorist in question is quite upset at having hit the cyclist, but I will leave it up to the police and, if needed, the courts to determine the guilt or innocence of the motorist and cyclist.
I have no problem with cyclists in general, but I think that the cyclist in question, as well as most who use Northbourne Avenue’s peculiar excuse for bicycle lanes in peak hour are nuts.
