Christmas Card from John Kerr
December 21st, 2005 at 05:02pm
I was surprised to recieve an envelope in the mail this morning bearing the old 2UE logo. Upon opening the envelope I was greeted by a rather nice Christmas Card.
The first thing I noticed was that it was from “John”, thankfully it did say “Lovely to meet you”, which instantly told me that it was from John Kerr.
The back of the card is blank, except for a small Southern Cross Broadcasting logo.
Anyway, thankyou John, the card was lovely, and I will ring you before the end of the week.

Sorry to continue my relentlessly negative commenting on your blog, Sam, but it seems to me that if someone says ‘talk to you on the weekend in 2006’ in a card, they don’t want you to phone them before the last weekend of 2005. This is not a logical implication of what’s said in the card, note – it’s just a ‘hint’.

Mark, thankyou, you have now confirmed beyond all reasonable doubt that John wrote “talk to you on the weekend in 2006”. This is a rather odd thing to say considering that we NEVER speak on the weekend, as John only works on weekdays. Is John cryptically informing me of yet another 2UE schedule change?
For the record, at the end of my conversation with John on Tuesday morning he invited me to ring again before Christmas.

Well, an explicit oral invitation like that would seem to supersede this written one.
Moreover, I’m starting to doubt my reading of your card. It is possible that it read “Talking with you on the week and in 2006.” Except I’m not really sure “on the week” is good english. In fact, I’m don’t even like “on the weekend” – surely the preposition should be ‘at’ (and ‘in’ in the case of the week)?

I suppose that depends on whether “weekend” and “week” are used as nouns or not. I will try and confirm what John wrote by asking him or his producer, the lovely Anastasia.

Thats a lovely card and must have been a nice surprise for you this morning. Mark should spend some time reading his own xmas cards, if he has any, rather than nitpicking about other peoples cards. Its a nice card with lovely xmas wishes for you to enjoy Samuel.
Merry Xmas to you and Nattie
