Samuel’s Santa Photo

December 20th, 2005 at 05:34pm

In what has become an annual tradition, I had my photo taken with Santa today at the David Jones Canberra City store. Unfortunately it is too late in the year for the photo to come back before Christmas, but as soon as it does return I will be posting it here.

I used to have my Santa photo taken at Myer (Grace Bros at the time), but since 2000 (the year when Myer/Grace Bros in Civic didn’t have Santa) I have been getting the photo at David Jones, and to be perfectly honest with you, I think they do a better job of it. Myer do have Santa again, but I find the staff to be a bit impersonal, and much prefer the service and photo quality at David Jones.

Samuel, you have left high school now. The time has come to put away childish things and become a man. And don’t think that combining childish behaviour with that of a retiree evens out in the middle as adult – it is just doubly inappropriate.

Mark, I don’t see anything childish in having a photo with Santa, in fact I see it as a valuable momento of each passing year.

What (other than visiting a retirement expo) do you see in my actions as retiree behaviour?

For the record, the retirement expo is aimed at retirees and soon-to-be-retirees, however it still contained plenty of useful information for those of us who are not even close to retiring.

Why does anyone need to conform to what society thinks is “appropriate behaviour”? Samuel is happy doing what he is doing and that is the most important thing. It’s his life and he is free to live it how he chooses. It’s not anyone’s place to judge him for his interests and I think it is admirable for a young man to be diverse and open to all that life has to offer. Telling someone to grow up just because they are having fun is a sign of immaturity in itself. Stay true to yourself, Samuel, you’re an inspiration!

while it may be true that people should legally be allowed to do whatever they like as long as they don’t impinge upon anyone else, this does not mean that their behaviour is healthy. Now, it is admittedly impossible for me to jump to judgements about the appropriateness of Samuel’s behaviour with so little knowledge of him, and directing such commentary to him is likely to do as much harm as good, so I’ll just shut up.

The retirement expo is what I was thinking of Samuel, yes. I feel fairly certain that you are pretty unique in wanting both to get you photo taken with Santa and attend the retirement expo.

I hope Santa didn’t go the grope when you were sitting on his knee … did you take Nattie along?

Actually I was sitting next to him, and last time I checked the shopping centres and department stores aren’t all that keen on pets (excluding pet shops).

Oh my god mark, what is wrong with samuel having a photo taken with Santa?

If he wants to its his business, personally I think good on Sam for being the unique person that he is.

I’d totally get my photo taken with Santa if I wasn’t so paranoid about sitting on some old guys lap. But if you can sit beside him… hmm… I’m so getting my photo taken with Santa.

    Hi Samuel,
I really like your blog & read it regularly.
It’s a shame your photo with Santa hasn’t arrived yet… Maybe you could do like a mini album of your old ones or something? That would be cool. I haven’t has my photo with Santa for a while now, but I do still enjoy advent calenders! Any excuse to eat choccie in the morning!
    Have a great Christmas x
