Samuel’s Blog Weekly Poll: Minimum Driving Age
January 21st, 2007 at 12:03am
Now that I’ve had a bit of “public beta” time to adjust a couple settings on the polling system and fix a few minor issues, it’s time to kick off the series of weekly polls.
- 14
- 15
- 16
- 17
- 18
- 19
- 20
- 21 or higher
Total Votes: 35
Started: January 20, 2007
I’ll try not to create polls with this many options in the future, but for some polls it is necessary. I have included the common ages and some that surround them, and left the less common ages with blanket options, just vote for the one that fits your opinion.
Feel free to discuss the poll subject in the comments below. You need to be a registered member of Samuel’s Blog to comment, but anyone can vote. The system will attempt to prevent you from voting more than once, and whilst it might not always be able to do that, I request that you only vote once.
The results from the test poll are as follows:
- Yes
- No
Total Votes: 14
Started: January 19, 2007
For a list of all previous results, see the Weekly Poll Results page.

I voted for “18” as I believe that driving is an inherently adult activity, due to the amount of responsibility it entails.
As I have previously said, I would prefer it if these things were based on a person’s level of maturity, but as we can’t really measure maturity we have to set nominal ages, and seeing as we declare people to be adults at 18 years of age, I think that is when we should assign adult rights and responsibilities, and the ability to be granted them.
I would be interested to hear your thoughts.

I voted for age 18. We don’t let ppl put the potential future of the country or state in their hands until age 18, yet we let them put their lives and the lives of others in their hands.
Myself and a number of my friends did not get provisional licenses until early 20s, none of us have had major accidents, if any.
I’d like to know the reasoning of the ppl voting age 13 and under.

I would love to know why people are voting for “13 and under” as well. I can’t get my head around that one.

Hi Samuel,
I’ve had a chance to reflect on our conversation and I think we need to start from scratch, please re-add me to msn as there are a few things we need to discuss.
Cheers,
HoinK

It’s been a pain in the neck, but the duplicate joke votes from Ismail for “13 or under” have been identified and removed. Action has been taken to attempt to avoid a repeat of the incident (it looks like IP logging didn’t work properly…hopefully that has been fixed).

There’s a saying “ask a silly question, get a silly answer” or something to that effect…it appears to be equally true in regards to poll answers…propose a silly answer and people will vote for it.
“13 and below” has been removed after some bright spark decided that it would be funny to vote for it about 50 times…clearly the IP logging function of this poll plugin is broken. Either that or somebody got into the MySQL database…I suspect the former.
