An email to 2GB’s Continuous Call Team

G’day Andrew and Joel,

It’s good to know that you’re there covering both matches live, even if Channel Nine think that A Current Affair and Two And A Half Men are more important. I will cut nine a small break for allowing you to cover both matches rather than just one though.

Go the doggies!

Best wishes,
Samuel Gordon-Stewart

And what’s this that Andrew mentioned two seconds after I hit “send”, that he is going to be doing the 3:30am-5am shift? At least he’s used to the early start seeing as he already presents sport during the breakfast news on 2GB.

Hi Sam,

I heard a reference in Alan Jones’s show this morning with which an intro was played, voiced by the usual bloke (lofty fulton) with an alarm sound and a welcome to some show starting at 3.30am. It’s probably linked to what Andrew’s said. Does that mean 2GB are cutting the 5 hour shifts out overnight and are now splitting them up? I have no idea if it’s just a one-off though.

I assume that it does, which is a much better idea than the one floated in the Sydney Morning Herald a few weeks back about replacing overnights with recorded bits of earlier shows.

I doubt it’s a one-off though. Except for a special news event, a single time 3:30am show makes no sense.

I doubt whether people will be waiting up to listen to Andrew’s show. And 3:30? This means there will be a three and a half hour shift from 12 midnight followed by a two hour shift from 3:30AM. Where’s the sense in this?

Actually I think it’s a three and a half hour shift followed by a one and a half hour shift, unless 2GB are dropping the Alan Jones Highlights half hour at 5am.

I agree that the concept is strange. I can only assume that they’re trying to make the overnight shows tighter, and possibly having a more news-oriented show (perhaps with grabs from the newsroom) from 3:30am. At least, that’s what springs to mind based on Frankster’s description of the promo.

Whether it will last or work will be interesting to see. In the long run I think this may have more to do with getting Andrew Moore settled in to a newstalk format, than establishing a new overnight show. Andrew has showed some promise while filling in for Jason Morrison and Ray Hadley this year on the weekday programs…I suspect that this show is his launching pad for a regular spot once the post Alan Jones reshuffle takes place.
