What do you think the accepted etiquette is for scratched horses in a Melbourne Cup sweep? Alter the winning pools and return the money to the people who had the scratched horses or not?
I should have seen the potential for this before I organised three different sweeps 🙁

Pen, no, but they will try to help you give up gambling.
Adam, good question. I’ve asked a couple people who have run a dozen or so sweeps between them in the last few years and they seem to think that the money should not be returned and the pools should not be altered, on the grounds that anyone who entered had an equal chance of being allocated a winning horse.
If it were up to me it would depend on when the horses were allocated in relation to the time they were scratched. I don’t think it is fair to allocate a horse after it has been scratched.
That being said, Sportingbet.com.au were running an automated Melbourne Cup Sweep service, and it looks like it was allocating all 24 horses regardless of whether they were scratched or not:

Luckily people weren’t tight enough to make an issue of it. We compromised by cutting the pool by a couple of dollars and giving the rest to charity.
