Samuel’s Blog Weekly Poll: Vote 1 Samuel?

Originally posted Monday, September 17, 2007
Update: This poll has received a fair bit of attention from regular readers of this blog, the Canberra media (2CC in particular), and the people of Canberra, and as such I have decided to bump this back up to the top of the page. I will do so again on Friday. End Update

I thought I might have a bit of fun with the poll this week. Last night I was reading various documents on the Australian Electoral Commision’s website [1], and discovered something which surprised me…candidates for elections can only be nominated after the writs have been issued. It’s logical when I think about it, as the nominees can only be confirmed as eligible to vote after the rolls have closed (which occurs at 8pm on the day the writs are issued), however it did correct my belief that candidates had to nominate prior to the writs being issued.

This got me thinking about whether or not I would have something to offer the electorate of Fraser as an independent candidate at the upcoming federal election. Admittedly, the chances of me actually unseating the current Labor member for Fraser aren’t great, but it is fairly obvious that I have a lot of views on a lot of subjects, and I think I could make a useful and interesting contribution to parliament.

So, the question this week is:

Would you like to see Samuel stand as an independent candidate at the upcoming federal election?

Total Votes: 101
Started: September 17, 2007

At this stage it is purely speculative. I’m not asking if you would vote for me, and I haven’t even decided if I want to stand for election. That being said, I think I could make a useful contribution, so I would like to know whether or not you would like to see me stand for election.

Now, last week’s poll:

Was APEC beneficial to Australia?

Total Votes: 34
Started: September 10, 2007

No surprises there!

For a list of all previous results, see the Weekly Poll Results page [3].

How do I vote, Samuel? I can’t see the vote buttons, only the results.

If you can’t see the buttons it probably means someone from your IP address has already voted.

Unfortunately the democracy plugin masks the IP addresses in the database in a way which isn’t immediately obvious to me, so I’ll investigate and see what I can do.

I’ll be in touch by email.

Great idea, Sambo. I’d love to be on your campaign committee. It is a great way to get your ideas out there.

My advice, however, would be to run as an independent for the Senate – the HoR is a foregone conclusion but there will be attention paid to the Senate given that Tucker is running again. You would not have a hope in hell of winning – but you will be participating in candidates debates that gain more attention due to the importance of the contest.

An independent called (I think) Dave Matthews, ran at the 2004 Senate election – he was/is a squeegie man at a Canberra intersection, but gained a fair bit of attention – he was the only independent to run in that particular race.

Correction, it was Dave Edwards, not Matthews. I think Dave Matthews is a singer.

Samuel, I hope you are seriously considering running in the future. I’d move to your electorate just to say I’ve voted for Samuel Gordon-Stewart. In fact, I’d be applying to join your committee!

Gosh Samuel with Clayton backing you how could you lose?
Why don’t you go into the political arena Clayton, I’m sure Australia could use another Sir Joh to mind numb the masses.

I’m glad to see that Tony has changed his tune and sees how overwhelmingly great I am.

I, for one Tony, don’t want to go into politics for the sole reason of not wanting to represent half-wits like your fine self.

Consider me a swinging voter, Sam. What are some of your key policies?

#9 Comment By Samuel On September 20, 2007 @ 7:14 pm

I’m planning on making my decision on whether or not to stand tomorrow. If I decide to stand, I’ll be happy to talk about policies then.

Right now I don’t want to get your hopes up (or down as the case may be) by making policy announcements and then deciding not to stand.

Clayton was probably looking into a mirror when he was typing which is understandable when you are obviously 6 foot up thy good self.
I for one wouldn’t want you representing me in any shape or form as I wouldn’t vote for anyone from the planet Stupiter.
But you keep typing anyway Clayton, you have to have some life.

Tony and Clayton, I understand that you don’t like each other, and I’m more than happy for you to both trade insults for a little while longer, but I would just like to take this opportunity to request that you play nice or ignore each other.

You’re both more than welcome here, and I enjoy it when people get stuck in to each other constructively, but you are both bordering on pointless insults now, which is something this site can do without. By all means feel free to argue with each other…just give some thought to your comments before posting them.

Thank you.
