John Kerr Returning to Pirate Radio

2UE’s John Kerr is now on holidays for four weeks, which will include a week (or thereabouts) broadcasting from a boat off the coast of Harwich, as part of the 40th anniversary of the criminalisation of British subjects being involved in pirate radio.

During John’s absence Clive Robertson will be broadcasting on weekdays, with 2UE’s News Director Clinton Maynard running the weekend show.

I rang John this morning to wish him “bon voyage”:

BBC Pirate Essex will have a webstream and will apparently be accepting emails, so I’ll give you more details when the time comes.

Nothing says pirate more than BBC – the exact monopoly that the pirates were going to sea to get rid of in the first place.

Many people, John Kerr included, were surprised that the BBC would put on a special pirate broadcast.

It’s not the first time they have done it though, they seem to be making a bit of a habit of it.

I wish John well on this voyage and hope he plays good oldies from the 60’s like Tip Toe Thru The Tulips by Tiny Tim.
Ah just kidding, I think they would make him walk the plank if he did that.
Is there any pirate songs?
Only pirate thingy that comes to mind is that silly Captain Pugwash Show from the 60’s.
Gosh I’m showing my age think quick, it was a stupid show so my great, great uncle told me.
Have a good one JK, gee I hope August goes fast.

Samuel, can you do me a favour please and get in touch with John before he goes and ask him not to forget to play his favourite song of all time when he’s on air.
It’s been ages since I’ve heard the Richard Harris version of MacArthur Park.
Do you think he’ll play it?
I somehow think I’m pushing my luck.

How about “A walk in the Black Forest”?

No, The Goodies already did that.
How about a black forest cake and we can take a long walk after it.

I loved Clive Robertson’s analysis of Macarthur Park a few weeks back..ring him and ask him about it.

I think I heard that, although I’m sure Robertson would be disappointed to find out that I don’t remember what he said.

I also think Abe may be plotting against me at the moment…Considering the circumstances, I know I would be. I won’t go in to detail though.

Who’s Abe? And why is he plotting against you?

#10 Comment By Samuel On July 31, 2007 @ 6:37 pm

Abe is Clive Robterson’s producer…and why I suspect that he is plotting against me is something I can not reveal at this time.

I’d heard of someone by Abe’s name on 2RRR up here which is a community radio station..wonder if it’s the same guy?

Samuel, I suggest that you could interview Keith Ashton for one of your forthcoming Persiflages. I understand that Keith worked on Radio Caroline, which was one of the pirate stations. His email address is: nswamfm [at] yahoo.com

Apparently my comments have made their way through the grapevine to Abe. I would just like to point out that my comments about Abe plotting against me were not entirely serious.

Abe has every reason to do so, and that is entirely my fault, but I doubt he really is…the matter which has brought this up is incredibly trivial.

Abe has already contacted me for a clarification, and I would like to take this opportunity to ensure that the grapevine responsible for directing Abe to this page is also aware that I am not serious about Abe plotting against me.

A rather annoying shortcoming of text is that it struggles to convey a tone of voice, and is a terrible medium for sarcasm. Some people overcome this shortcoming by surrounding their sarcastic comments in little sarcasm markers, but that really defeats the purpose of sarcasm.

It is a good medium for timing how long it takes for the message to filter through to the subject though…

And to answer Frankster’s question. I can’t answer that.
