The things people say

Here’s a conversation I had with someone on the phone yesterday:

Them: (name of business).
Me: Good afternoon, I was just wondering what your dress code is?
Them: Anything from casual to formal.
Me: OK then, thank you for your time.
Them: Is that OK?
Me: Yes, that’s fine, thank you.
Them: OK, good bye.
(They hang up)

The stand out quote from them in that conversation is: “Is that OK?”

What a strange question…it’s their dress code. What were they going to do if I said “no”? Change the dress code because a random person rings them and tells them to? I doubt it.

Update: Clayton Northcutt has pointed out a deficiency in my logic which I can only attribute to being quite tired at the time. See the comments for details. End Update

Are you sure that the question wasn’t meant to be interpretted as “Is my answer sufficient for you?” Or “Is that your only question, or do you have another?” The former, rather than the latter, is the first interpretation I had of that conversation.

Was it a gentlemen’s club?

It was the tone of her voice which made me think she meant “is that dress code acceptable”…you’re probably right Clayton, and I’ll admit to being rather tired at the time.

No Adam, it wasn’t.

Is that okay, then?

Yep fine, and please don’t change your answer…that should cover all the possibilities.

Just seemed like the sort of conversation you’d have at a gentlemen’s club.

I’ll quote the first part of the Vision Statement from sgs.com

We aim to be the most competitive and the most productive service organization in the world.

Looks like you might be on to something Baron.
