Why do visitors to Canberra go around in circles?

I often hear people who visit Canberra saying that Canberra is too hard to get around because they keep getting lost and going around in circles.
The last person I heard saying that was 2UE’s Paul Makin, shortly after 12:30 this morning. Rather than getting in to a debate with him about how much easier it is to get around Canberra than Sydney, I decided to offer him a bit of wisdom…just after 2am.
“You do realise that this is the home of bureaucracy!”
Now if that doesn’t explain why people in Canberra go around in circles, I don’t know what does!

Sam,
I think you covered Canberra’s confusing topography of circles very nicely in your piece about Corranderk St dated 30th May 2006.
However, I love the subtle truth that you have pointed out. Only you would notice that the circliest of all the circular circles in Canberra is the seat of Federal Parliament.

Ah yes, the article that did the rounds inside the ACT Planning and Land Authority.
They stopped talking to me after that (no great loss).
And yes, feel free to reuse the joke…I doubt I could stop you anyway!
