Samuel’s Musicians Of The Week Another remix of the original Samuel’s Persiflage intro

Samuel’s Persiflage #3

February 19th, 2006 at 11:17pm

Samuel's Persiflage
Samuel’s Persiflage episode number three, the February 2006 edition is online. There is also a low quality version for the bandwidth impaired here.

This episode kicks off with Samuel somehow managing to call it “episode number two” and make very little sense in the process. This is followed by an interview with Danny O’Brien from the Electronic Frontier Foundation talking about the privacy issues in the new version of Google Desktop, Internet companies in China, as well as various other things about your rights online.

We take a look at the listener feedback, which for one reason or another seems to be somewhat of a multimedia explosion this month. As promised during the feedback, here is the link to the old intro of Samuel’s Persiflage.

If you have any feedback don’t hesitate to send it to podcast@samuelgordonstewart.com, or leave a comment below.

The person who was going to be up next on the show got lost in a timezone conversion and hasn’t been seen since or heard from since, thankfully John Kerr’s birthday saved the day, my conversation with John can be heard here in lieu of the missing interviewee.

We have four unusual news stories, including something about fluorescent pigs.

That concludes Samuel’s Persiflage #3, there will be another episode in March.

I did make mention near the end of the podcast that there will be a “Best of 2005/2006” episode after the December edition. What I have planned is that, once the December edition is online there will be a webpoll where everyone can vote for their favourite interview of the year (I’m including 2005 because it only has one episode) and the top two (or possibly three if I’m feeling generous) voted interviews will form the “Best Of” episode.

The Samuel’s Persiflage #3 file itself is available here, and is 41:15 in length (37.7MB) at 128kbps stereo. The 128kbps format was decided upon because it produces a very good sound quality, and doesn’t “flatten” any music used in the podcast. I do, however, acknowledge that this is just unreasonable for dial-up, so a 16kbps mono file is also available here. The sound quality is pretty dreadful, but it is understandable for the most part. The low quality version is 4.72MB

For those of you who are using podcast software to receive your podcasts, the feed can be found here and if you are using iTunes you can subscribe to Samuel’s Persiflage by clicking here.

Sam, have you attached pop-ups to your page?
Something popped up when I came here.

That was a third party, the issue has been resolved but some caches are still retaining an old copy of the affected pages. A “hard refresh” may help, CTRL-F5 in most browsers.

When I play the intro backwards it says: Die you high flying surrender monkies”.

What is the significance of this statement?

Best Persiflage yet Samuel! Nice work! I eagerly await episode 4…

Very good Samuel — I listened to the “low quality” version, and found even that to be of reasonable quality.
The interview with Danny from EFF.org regarding Google, the “Great Firewall of China”, and other privacy issues was particularly interesting.
Also, the sending of “Error Reports” — whether to or not . —( I don’t send Error Reports to Microsoft whenever Internet Explorer crashes ).

The rest of the podcast was quite interesting – much more professional than the previous two — I listened to the whole 28 minutes . I might send you a voice report for ‘feedback’ section in the next Persiflage. John B1_B5.

Glad you liked it, although I have to ask what you meant by 28 minutes? If you only got 28 minutes of the podcast then something went wrong in the download.

A voice report would be most appreciated John.

    Hi there

I just listened to the old intro and am wondering how you made it. Is that you singing or someone else? And did you add the music yourself? Love to know where you got the idea from and why you aren’t using it anymore.

I got the number of minutes wrong obviously ….. anyway I have sent you an Audio report, AND I have posted a brief report and a link to the Persiflage on “Australia – The Land Down Under ” . John B1_B5.

Lucylou, yes, it is me singing (as scary as that may be). To answer the rest of your questions I will quote my comment from this post

it was a childs metallophone (metal xylophone) with 8 notes and a childs marimba with 4 notes (I was always told that it was a bongo, whilst that is incorrect, I still refer to it affectionately as that).

The music was recorded in three parts. The first part was the marimba, which I recorded whilst thinking about the lyrics, I then recorded the metallophone whilst listening to the marimba through headphones and thinking about the lyrics. The last recorded section was the vocals, which occured whilst listening to the marimba in headphones. The computer used for the recording is a bit long in the tooth and can’t handle playing multiple audio tracks AND recording one at the same time.

I did perform a bit of post production which involved altering volume and noise filtering, it also involved carefully looping the middle section (the part between first and second set of vocals) so that it would be long enough for the intro.

I had a lot of fun with it, but I think the new intro sounds better (it also doesn’t seem to scare people away).

I guess I’m interested in what gave you the idea to put those instruments together and what made you decide to sing persiflage like that- it’s just so unusuall that it will be interesting to see how your mind works by the answer you give 🙂

Well, the “Samuel’s Per-si-flaaaage” section just came to me while I was thinking about things in the shower, and the rest developed around it. The basic idea for the instumental section developed around the lyrics, and the exact details of it all were improvised during the performance.

Unfortunately, the download statistics showed that about 10-15% of people were cancelling the download very early, especially those using media players to download it. I also received a fair bit of feedback about it, and decided to drop it in favour of a minor remix of the end music, which seems to be working well, and has resulted in many more full downloads.

There was a large enough response to warrant the publication of the original intro.

Thanks for replying. It sure is an interesting piece of music. I must admit to preferring the new one, but at least the old one had character and a point of difference. Are you enjoying having a Pod Cast?

  • 14. Samuel  |  February 20th, 2006 at 11:01 pm

Yes, the old intro was unique, and I can assure you that I did not take the decision lightly. The new one (which is also used as the closing music) is some music I’ve had access to for a while and always wanted to use as closing music. I decided that it would make a good intro as well. I think having it at the beginning and end of the podcast works quite well, and establishes “the brand” of Samuel’s Persiflage.

I’m enjoying the podcast immensely, it’s fun to put together and write the descriptions (there are a few different descriptions with varying degrees of detail for the various pages and RSS feeds…I hope that doesn’t isn’t submitted to the plain english campaign as gobledegook), and there is a certain sense of achievement once it is all done.

I’m having fun, developing my skills, and hopefully entertaining all of you. I suppose the succinct answer to your question is “yes”.
