The 2CC Bunnings Broadcast (and most of my afternoon) Dream of Electrocution

Samuel’s Musician Of The Week

February 12th, 2006 at 10:26pm

This week’s award goes to Burl Ives, well known for singing songs such as “On Top Of Old Smokey”, “The Little White Duck”, “Mule Train” and a stirring rendition of Bob Dylan’s “The Times They Are A-Changin'”, however I have chosen his rendition of “By The Time I Get To Phoenix” as the feature song.

By the time I get to Phoenix she’ll be rising
She’ll find the note I left hangin’ on her door
She’ll laugh when she reads the part that says I’m leavin’
‘Cause I’ve left that girl so many times before

By the time I make Albuquerque she’ll be working
She’ll prob’ly stop at lunch and give me a call
But she’ll just hear that phone keep on ringin’
Off the wall…that’s all

By the time I make Oklahoma she’ll be sleepin’
She’ll turn softly and call my name out loud
And she’ll cry just to think that I’d really leave her
Tho’ time and time I’ve tried to tell her so
She just didn’t know…I would really go.

Have you seen ‘No Direction Home’. The Dylan doco? Scorsese is a knob.

I like Scorsese, and I’ve seen most of No Direction Home, although I was tired at the time and don’t remember much.

‘No Direction Home’ is really good. They all quite knobbish though. It gives you a good insight into Dylan and his relationship with the moronic media and gratuitous groupies.

Have you seen ‘The Aviator’? I quite liked that film. Intersting story and I thought Donatello’s acting was good too.

Correction. The ? should be after ‘Have you seen ‘No Direction Home’?

You should hear Isaac Hayes cover of By The Time I get To Phoenix, it goes just over 19 mins and Isaac really berings it down to soulsville.

What are you going on about Chuck?

  • 8. Chuck Berry  |  February 13th, 2006 at 9:32 pm

Isaac Hayes sings a song called ‘Chocolate Salty Balls’.

19 minutes is a long time Tony. I enjoy long songs.

‘Echoes’ by Pink Floyd goes for 23 mins and 31 seconds. It takes up the whole second side of their 1971 album ‘Meddle’.

Here are the lyrics. There is a really long musical interlude between verses.

    ‘Echoes’ Pink Floyd

Overhead the albatross hangs motionless upon the air
And deep beneath the rolling waves
    In labyrinths of coral caves
The echo of a distant time
    Comes willowing across the sand
And everything is green and submarine

And no-one showed us to the land
And no-one knows the where or whys
But something stirs and something tries
And starts to climb towards the light

    Strangers passing in the street
By chance two separate glances meet
And I am you and what I see is me
And do I take you by the hand
And lead you through the land
And help me understand the best I can

And no-one calls us to move on
And no-one forces down our eyes
And no-one speaks and no-one tries
And no-one flies around the sun

Cloudless everyday you fall upon my waking eyes
Inviting and inciting me to rise
And through the window in the wall
Come streaming in on sunlight wings
A million bright ambassadors of morning

    And no-one sings me lullabies
And no-one makes me close my eyes
And so I throw the windows wide
And call to you across the sky

Because I’ve been away. I’ve read most of the comments in my email and then been distracted by something else which I had to do.

I was going to approve them a few hours ago and got called away. Yes, I posted something earlier, I was going to approve all of the comments as soon as I finished with that, it didn’t happen, and I apoligise.

    Sorry about the delay.
