I’ve received and email from somebody going by the name of “Spacious Lossless” asking me about what podcasts I listen to.
You have a podcast but do you listen to other podcasts?
I’ve replied to “Spacious Lossless”, but I though I would share the answer will all of my readers.
Naturally, I listen to my own podcast (Samuel’s Persiflage [1]), often multiple times due to the fact that I have to do all the production work, and I must say I am very proud of turning a raw product into a fully fledged podcast episode.
I also listen to This Week In Tech [2] with Leo Laporte and a cast of many alternating others, as well as Security Now! [3] with Steve Gibson and Leo Laporte. I’ve grouped these two together as they are both really Leo Laporte productions.
Insatiable Banalities [4] with Jim Boots, Johnboy, Candy A, Gertrude and extras, another Canberra based podcast is also on my listening list, although I would have to admit I listen more for the talk than the music. (Warning, some people may find this podcast offensive).
You Are The Guest [5] with Bill Grady, containing one listener interview per episode, with the interviewees being from all corners of the globe.
I also watch the twice weekly video podcast, DL.TV [6], a tech podcast containing Patrick Norton, Robert Herron and occasional guests.
There is no RSS feed for The Best Of The John Laws Week [7], but it fits the criteria of a podcast in every other way, so it counts. I have class during the broadcast copy of this, so I listen to it online.
That pretty much sums it up!

Sam, I have a question… re 2CC, specifically the distribution of gender roles.
All of the presenters are male, the assistants seem to be young females, and many of the listeners who call in are females. What do you make of this, as a listener yourself?

That’s a very good question Pandora. I see a similar trend amongst other commercial talkback stations, and in some cases, even the ABC (although they do have more female presenters).
I suppose, if we look back at the 1960’s and to a lesser extent the 1970’s, the overwhelming majority of the music hosts were male, as they’ve aged they’ve often moved into talk and “classic hits” type stations.
If we take a look at the current radio stations catering to younger audiences, there are a large amount of female presenters. The hosts who cater for younger audiences today, will be catering for older audiences in twenty of thirty years.
As time goes by, I think we will see more female talk presenters.
I also think that, in commercial radio, people don’t just get thrown on air on their first day working in radio (newsreaders excluded), you work behind the scenes for a while first.
Stuart Bocking would be a good example, he joined 2UE as a newsreader in the mid 1990’s, became a producer, was Lawsie’s executive producer for quite a while, took over the saturday night show, left his producer role, became the weekend midnight-to-dawn host and is now the weekday midnight-to-dawn host.
