Looking at the weather report for the Canberra Retirement Expo [1], I am somewhat convinced that Capital Radio Network Outside Broadcasts (which in this case are defined as “any broadcast by a Capital Radio Network station which takes place from a location other than a Capital Radio Network building”) attract thunderstorms. Take a look at the current weather report (at time of posting) for the retirement expo.

As you can see, the two days on which 2CC are broadcasting from the expo, thunderstorms are predicted. Yesterday the weather report was for thunderstorms on only one of those days, but as it draws closer, more storms are expected.
This may seem like a coincidence, but I clearly recall a 2CA outside broadcast at Floriade a few years back where thunder was clearly audible over the airwaves. It was actually fun comparing the time that I hear the thunder at home and the time it came over the radio.
Mike Welsh, who will be at the Retirement Expo on Friday thinks I’m “drawing a long bow”, and he is probably right, but it is an interesting coincidence.
In other related news, whilst I was having lunch in Dickson, 2CC’s Mike Frame [2] (who heard me on the John Laws show the other morning [3] and will be at the Retirement Expo on Saturday) was walking past and stopped to say hello before going off to play lawn bowls. I remember playing lawn bowls as a school activity in year 8, it was good fun, and it truly is a sport which I would highly recommend.

Speaking of “drawing a long bow” , I saw an episode of the TV series “Robin Hood” (starring Richard Green ) recently.
The English “Long Bow” has earned itself a place in history as one of the most formidible bows ever produced.
You just have to watch the opening sequence to see how much effort Green (aka ‘Robin Hood’ ) puts into drawing back that bow !

That should be Richard Greene (not Green ). The TV series was called “The Adventures of Robin Hood” . Richard Greene started appearing in movies in the 1930’s. He was born in 1918 and died in 1985.

Richard Greene certainly appears to be very talented. [4] the TV series “The adventures of Robin Hood” ran from 1955-1960

Yeah, and the theme song from that TV show made it into the Top 20 here in Australia in 1956.

Hello there Samuel. I am a long time reader of your site, and like you I am quite excited about the Retirement Expo on the weekend. Will there be a chance to meet any of the 2CC personalities? I am particularly keen to get an autograph from Mike Frame. Will he be there and do you think he will have any time for that?

Mike Welsh will be there for the drive show tommorow from 3pm-6pm
David Young will be there from 7am-9am on Saturday for the gardening show
Mike Frame will be there from 9am-2pm on Saturday for weekend magazine and the trading post.
The ads do say that you can meet these people, so I would say they will probably hang around abit and should be able to give out autographs. I don’t work for them so I can’t confirm how long they will be there for outside of show times, but I would think it would be long enough to socialise with some of the listeners and passers-by.

I just curious Sam of your thoughts on the SEVEN UP series . It’s about a bunch of English children which get interviewed every 7 years. To see if there is any truth in the old saying SHOW ME THE CHILD AT SEVEN AND I’LL SHOW YOU THE MAN?

I am actually part of a similar study of children/young adults who are interviewed annually to check on their progress, what levels of education they are receiving, how their career is going, how they feel about life in general.
It is used to help educators better prepare future students and to see how different educational factors influence career choice etc.
It is called the Longitudinal Surveys Of Australian Youth and information can be found [7].

How do you feel about being selected for the study? And how do your parents feel about your involvement? Are they happy that they allowed you to be part of this study, or do they have any regrets?
I really enjoy watching the seven up series and wondered how the parents felt years after allowing their children to be part of a life documentry

They have no issues with it, all it really involves is a phone call each year. I enjoy it, sometimes it is hard to believe that is has been a year since I hear from them last.

I think it’s harder on the English chidren were they film the children. They lose there privacy and it could become an issue.

That is a very good question. There is one which does hearing tests, Helen King Hearing Centres at stand 116 and a rather interesting household & craft accessories for the elderly (scissors, cutting tools, magnifiers, lamps etc) stall at stand 187. There are also a bunch of stands with companion pets, financial advice, holidays, health issues, electric scooters and much more, plus there are a whole heap of short seminars on various topics which might be of interest. Denise Drysdale performs twice daily as well.
I would just recommend that you go along and take a look, you can collect booklet which lists everything which is happening and features an easy to read map of the venue.
Go and have some fun, there is a lot to see and do.
