Canberra Radio Ratings #2, 2009

Nielsen will release the 2nd and last Canberra radio ratings for 2009 later today and, as usual, I’ll post the results here when they come in.

The figures were sent to radio stations yesterday and some details have leaked. According to Jock’s Journal, 104.7 leads the pack on 18.3% and Mix 106.3 is in 2nd place on 18%. This means that 104.7 have retained first place, but lost audience share, dropping from 20.5%. 666 ABC Canberra have been bumped from 2nd place and have lost audience share, they were on 19%. Mix have climbed from 3rd to 2nd and gained audience, jumping from 16% to 18%.

Unlike the ratings for “metropolitan markets”, the publicly released ratings for Canberra are only overall figures and not shift-by-shift and age group figures, which means those figures get selectively released in the press releases from the stations…and in leaks. So far all that I have heard is a figure which relates to 2CC…apparently the Mark Parton breakfast show, the Steve Price morning show and weekends all increased their audience share, while the Mike Welsh drive show lost audience share. I’m awaiting confirmation of this. (Update: Breakfast audience share didn’t move but the number of listeners went up, and evenings went up as well)

Update 3:23pm: OK, back again, and time to go in to detail about the ratings, and as I’m in the unusual position of having a metro-market style report in my possession, I might as well cover the shift-by-shift and demographic figures, albeit without graphs as I’m not going to drastically alter my spreadsheet for what is probably a once off occurrence. This will take a little while so I’ll update the page every few minutes as I go.

    Thanks for the results Samuel.
    The ratings dont lie, but I find it hard to believe that 2CC is positioned at 6th on a weekend considering the fact they broadcast the continous call.
    It is good to see that people are getting tired of 104.7 and its music library consisting of a single CD of a few mixed songs.

    Samuel, how exactly are the polls taken? Do a few researchers ask selected people what they listen to as they enter Belconnen mall???

    That was a marathon…the stuff I can graph is quick and easy to do because the spreadsheet is there, ready to go, just waiting for me to type a few numbers. The extra stuff that I had to work with this time, whilst great to have, was an utter pain.

    Dave, the Canberra ratings do bounce around a fair bit which can be partly attributed to the relatively small sample size, and partly attributed to the irregularity of surveys. If we ignored all of the metro surveys except the 2nd and 5th of each year, we may see similar “bouncing”.

    Nielsen distribute ratings survey books to households over the course of a few weeks, attempting to distribute them evenly amongst different age groups. From this year in the metro markets, one person in each household receives and book, unlike the previous system whereby everyone in the household received one. I’m not sure if the new approach is being used in regional markets.

    Incidentally, you’ll find plenty of people who would argue that asking people entering a shopping mall what station they listen to would be more accurate, however given the complexity of the surveys (you have to nominate a station, be it listed, unlisted or none, for each fifteen minute block of the day), I think the survey system, despite its flaws, is the best system we have.

    It could do with a larger sample group, but that costs more money, and I doubt that the station would be willing to fork out enough money to Nielsen to cover the cost.
