Media Watch gets it right, and then gets it wrong

All in the space of two consecutive segments.

First up, their excellent report in to the media management and manipulation of the Rudd government, which press gallery journalists seem to agree is much worse than it was under the Howard government.

And then a peculiar beat up about questions which Alan Jones didn’t ask of Cronulla Sharks CEO Tony Zappia.

The point which Media Watch seem to have missed here is that the interview was about Cronulla’s financial issues, not about Mr. Zappia accidentally hitting an employee some time ago.

Perhaps Alan could have asked the question, but it wasn’t what the interview was about, and it’s entirely possible that Alan ran out of time…after all, the interview did go for five minutes, which is fairly standard for an interview during a breakfast show.

The analogy here is that if I was interviewing the manager of the local supermarket about their new checkouts, I wouldn’t ask him about the price of frozen peas…unless of course I needed to fill half a minute and wanted to buy frozen peas after work.

Anyway, go and check out the first link. The report in to the media management and manipulation of the Rudd government is quite excellent. I was watching ABC news on Sunday night and was wondering why they took a pot shot at Kevin Rudd asking himself questions…now I know.

Fire fighters not to be held responsible for 2003 bushfire: Fire Service president

This just arrived in my inbox at 2QN (not sure why, but I also just received a press release about a power failure in far-west New South Wales, so it must be one of those days).

RFSA PRESIDENT EXPRESSES OUTRAGE AT ‘ERRONEOUS’ SUGGESTIONS THAT VOLUNTEER FIRE FIGHTERS TO BE HELD LIABLE FOR CANBERRA FIRES

Brian McKinlay, president of the Rural Fire Service Association, the only recognised body that represents 70,000 rural fire fighters in NSW, said volunteer fire fighters are fully protected under the Rural Fires Act and expressed outrage at suggestions that volunteers were to be held personally liable for the deadly Canberra fires in 2003.

Mr McKinlay’s comments followed ACT Supreme Court legal proceedings last week in relation to the Canberra Fires in which it was suggested that volunteer fire fighters had been betrayed.

He said comments from “unauthorised fire fighting organisations and those with political agendas” caused undue stress and concern to members and indicated a complete lack of knowledge and expertise in fire fighting policy and management in NSW and other jurisdictions.

“At no time has it been suggested in or outside the ACT Supreme Court that our volunteers are not looked after in the event of being involved in legal proceedings. Rural fire fighters, particularly volunteers, are fully protected by the legislation which governs their activities.

“The misleading information is being promoted by people who have little if not any knowledge about the legal protection provided to our volunteers,” Mr McKinlay said.

He said Rural Fire Service Commissioner Shane Fitzsimmons also expressed his “unequivocal commitment to representing most vigorously the interests of all members against legal proceedings associated with the conduct of . . . fire fighting and related activities” in an open letter to all members.

Mr McKinlay said in addition to the protection provided to volunteer firefighters under the law, public liability protection is also available as well as a worker’s compensation scheme in the event of injury or death.

“The experience, dedication and commitment of volunteer fire fighters form a vital part in fire fighting in Australia and whose advice is crucial in terms of any ongoing fire management policy in this country.

“Our members do a wonderful job and, as President and a volunteer myself, I would be the first to react if I believed members were not being provided with the protection they so justly deserve,” Mr McKinlay said.

Press release ends

I’m feeling out of the loop on Canberra’s commotions and rumblings already.

It’s on the move

Another one from the media unit of the Australian Federal Police:

ACT Policing is seeking witnesses to an aggravated robbery that occurred at a Giralang service station May 25, 2009.

A man entered the Mobile service station on Canopus Street about 8.00pm

In a break from standard procedure, the mobile service station then fled the scene on foot instead of the offender. Anyone with information regarding the whereabouts of the missing mobile service station is asked to contact Crimestoppers.

On 1WAY FM this morning at 7:45 with James Scott

Rain in Deniliquin and surrounds seems to have everyone excited, and if time permits, you can’t escape crime by visiting a rural area.

That’s this morning on the 1WAY FM breakfast show with James Scott at about 7:45am, via telephone from the studios of 2QN Deniliquin.

Long day

Got in to work just after 4:30am. Spent most of the day babysitting Fairfax’s mess. Now babysitting (panelling) Sports Today off a webstream until 7pm when Fairfax reckon the sound quality on the satellite will go back to normal.

Back tomorrow at 4:30am to actually do some of my work…aka prepare some news. I’m glad it rained today…instant story and a grab from Weatherzone. I have some sport left over from the weekend and a few useful press releases to recycle. It won’t be the best news ever tomorrow, but it’s going to air which, under the circumstances, I think is pretty good.

Big W, a new coat, and voicetracking

I couldn’t get to sleep until 2am this morning which was most annoying, and made me wonder if perhaps I should just go to work early. Eventually I did get to sleep and had a dream which bordered on being a nightmare, which was probably a good thing as it woke me up at 4:30am, just in time to go to work.

The dream started with me talking to a friend from whom I once borrowed a car. I was talking to him about how I had a job interview at Big W coming up which I wasn’t really looking forward to…he had the opposite view and thought it would be an absolutely wonderful job (in hindsight, I should have told him that if it was so great, he should go to the interview), and that I needed a new dark coat for the interview.

I reluctantly agreed that a new coat would be a good idea, and he offered to take me to a store selling dark coats later in the day. I then went to the top of a section of the Canberra Centre (which no longer exists) where my laptop was floating…although I ignored the laptop and decided that I really didn’t want to get a coat today, so I rang the aforementioned friend to inform them of this decision, which they begrudgingly accepted. We instead decided to get the coat tomorrow.

After this I went home and noticed that my parents were sitting in the spare room playing cards and listening to 1WAY FM (it was the afternoon according to the dream), which for one reason or another was playing my Sunday afternoon 2QN/3NE voicetracking.

I went in to my room to go to bed and sleep, but noticed that my bed was missing. It had been replaced by a curtain.

The dream then ended abruptly.

Fixed? Leon Byner is not what I call “fixed”

Fairfax syndication’s website says:

Most services are now restored. However, live news on w’end aft, nghts, and M-F Drive will have faults. Repairs should be completed by 2/6/2009. Prefed and Rural News are also on DC.

Uh huh, so fixed means that you were feeding Neil Mitchell on the Auxillary channel earlier, and Leon Byner from Adelaide now? Yep, having to manually download news from Digital Courier because you send the wrong program on the auxillary channel is what I call fixed!

*sigh*

Oh, and tell Neil Mitchell that he is a break behind will you…

Update 2:48pm: Apparently having Leon Byner on the aux channel is intentional due to a lack of circuits until a part arrives from Israel. It would have been nice to have been told in advance. End Update

My phone is complaining

There are two laws of mobile phones:
1. If you take it in the shower, it will ring
2. If you have run out of space for text messages, one will be sent to you when you are nowhere near your phone, you will notice half an hour later, delete some old messages and have to wait three weeks for the new message to arrive.

Right now I’m three quarters of the way through law number two…I dealt with law number one last week, and the week before, and the week before that. I should just stop taking the phone in to the bathroom.

On 1WAY FM this morning

At about 7:45am I’ll be chatting with James Scott about a couple artists visiting Deniliquin.

I was tempted to talk about the local sport scores, but it’d sound like I was reading an irrelevant shopping list for an hour.

Why you shouldn’t leave your dog alone with the phone

From ananova:

Police feared the worse [sic] when they received a 999 call which sounded as if a serious attack was underway.

Operatives heard whining noises and a man shouting: “Come out or else – I’m warning you”, reports Sky News.

Then the line went dead. Fearing the worst, police rang back – but it turned out to be a shaggy dog story.

A very apologetic woman confirmed that all was well and that the culprit was her pet dog Bailey.

The 14-month-old golden retriever had grabbed the house phone in his mouth and ran off into the garden.

The emergency call operator had heard the woman’s husband trying to get the dog to come out from his hiding place behind the garden shed.

Bailey had inadvertently dialled 999 while attempting to keep his grip on the phone.

UK sitcom The IT Crowd solved this problem a few years back by making the emergency number just a tad harder to dial.

Sadly the government didn’t implement the idea, although there might be a good reason for that:

Samuel’s Musicians Of The Week: Soft Cell

The award for the week goes to Soft Cell, and the feature song is Tainted Love.

Sometimes I feel I’ve got to
Run away I’ve got to
Get away
From the pain that you drive into the heart of me
The love we share
Seems to go nowhere
And I’ve lost my light
For I toss and turn I can’t sleep at night

(chorus)
Once I ran to you (I ran)
Now I’ll run from you
This tainted love you’ve given
I give you all a boy could give you
Take my tears and that’s not nearly all
Tainted love
Oh…tainted love

Now I know I’ve got to
Run away I’ve got to
Get away
You don’t really want any more from me
To make things right
You need someone to hold you tight
And you think love is to pray
But I’m sorry I don’t pray that way

Once I ran to you (I ran)
Now I’ll run from you
This tainted love you’ve given
I give you all a boy could give you
Take my tears and that’s not nearly all
Tainted love
Oh…tainted love

Don’t touch me please
I cannot stand the way you tease
I love you though you hurt me so
Now I’m gonna to pack my things and go

Tainted love (ooh) tainted love
Tainted love (ooh) tainted love
Tainted love (ooh) tainted love
Tainted love (ooh) tainted love
Touch me baby, tainted love
Touch me baby, tainted love
Tainted love (ooh)
Tainted love (ooh)
Tainted love
Tainted love

There is an interesting early demo of the song on YouTube at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qsMz9vIaLwQ&fmt=18 which sounds a fair bit different to the released version of the song.
