Storm Alert

There appears to be some rather large and interesting storm activity around the Canberra region at the moment. The weather radar indicates that there is plenty of storm activity heading towards Canberra with some rather heavy rain to accompany it.

The storms also appear to have somewhat more powerful lightning strikes than usual, as they are completely disrupting AM radio signals rather than merely adding some crackle to them.

Update: Apparently the vast majority of the storm affected areas from Gungahlin through to Goulburn (and probably west towards Tumut). The Gungahlin Weather Centre has some interesting photos of the hail at http://www.gungahlinweather.com/photos/photography.htm [1]
End Update

It was quite a storm. I got alot of hail out at my house.

I went to sleep a short time after the storm activity seemingly disappeared at my place (around 3:30pm) and didn’t wake up until this morning so I either missed the storm activity, or it wasn’t loud enough to wake me.

Hi Samuel –

As they say in the industry ‘long time listener, first time caller (ok, I know that should be writer in this case, but why spoil a great saying with semantics).

I have read and listened to you for quite a while and really appreciate your hard work in maintaining this blog and I usually find your comments most interesting. Like you, I’m a talkback radio nut (maybe I’m leaning towards the nut part) and have 2CC almost permanently on.

Anyway, I thought today was as good a day as any to join ‘your mob’.

I run a weather station here in Gungahlin and we certainly did cop the tail end of yesterdays storm. The hills around here resembled a winter wonderland, looking more like snow than hail. The storms were mainly restricted to Canberra’s north, and in a line from Gungahlin to Goulburn. I heard the Federal highway was quite dangerous for a time.

I have posted a couple of pictures of the storm on my Gungahlin Weather Centre web site at [2]

Anyway Samuel, nice ‘chatting’ to you. All the best.

So I probably did miss most of it here in Reid (all I felt was a light sprinkle of rain around 2:40pm).

When I checked the weather radar yesterday afternoon there were quite a few storm cells moving between Tumut and Canberra, and more being generated west of Tumut. They all looked quite severe, so I hope everyone who was in the path of the storms is OK.

Thanks for the link to the pictures gungahlin.

We hardly get any storms up here anymore, looks like you southerners stole them all.
Come on, give em back.
Don’t let this turn into a weather war now.
These are fighting words.
Grrrrrrrr.

I would imitate the sound of thunder in text, but I don’t know how…
