Looks like the ABC are climbing the ladder.

  • 2. One Wire Less  |  September 20th, 2006 at 6:55 pm

So Spear, on what basis does it look as though the ABC is climbing the ladder ?

  • 3. Chuck A. Spear  |  September 20th, 2006 at 9:48 pm

By virtue of this abstract summary One Wire Less.

From what I can deduce, after running these stats through a simple dlognwot algorhythm via the mainframe in Reid, is the ABC has climbed the ladder and is now clearing the guttering of dead leaves.

It’s possible it might also mend the downpipe and later enjoy a bowl of pine chunks, but this is pure conjecture.

My favourite station is Other FM. It broadcasts from a 34kW B1+B2 satellite which is coupled to a c3po modulator from just across the river styx. It mainly plays light persiflage and songs by the seekers.

I hope it manages to climb the ladder next ratings period.

    Ratings schmatings. Who cares !

  • 7. John B1_B5  |  September 21st, 2006 at 8:15 am

2CC would have been near the top of the heap if the presenter of the Drive Show had joined in the spirit of “Talk Like a Pirate Day” .

Keelhaul the decks you landlubbers ! Man the bilgepumps !

  • 8. Loki  |  September 21st, 2006 at 4:35 pm

You certainly have some very odd people loitering around here

  • 9. Chuck A. Spear  |  September 24th, 2006 at 10:34 pm

You are right Loki. How Odd!

  • 10. Loki  |  September 25th, 2006 at 12:44 am

Yes Chuck, my comment was “moderated”, but I was asking about the odd call to talk like a pirate for a day. I say it again – odd!

  • 11. Chuck A. Spear  |  September 25th, 2006 at 8:30 am

Yes the pirate talk is odd. A long walk off a short plank.

  • 12. John B1_B5  |  September 25th, 2006 at 9:16 am

    I suggest a “Talk Like A Pilot” day –

This is your captain speaking ladies and gentlemen. There will be a slight delay before we land at Canberra airport. We are going into a holding pattern for the time being, so take full advantage of this delay and have a gander at some of the interesting Canberra landmarks as we circle overhead . Thare’s Parliament House, the Aboriginal Tent Embassy, Black Mountain Tower, Lake Burley Griffin, The Erindale Centre, Wanniassa Shopping Centre, the ACT Assembly Building, a statue of Bob Hawke, and much much more.
Six-two and even, over and out !

  • 13. Samuel  |  September 25th, 2006 at 10:39 am

A bloke I never did get along with in the UK has an addition to the list of “talk like a…” days. His suggestion is “talk like Yoda day“.

What if we combine all of them together…”talk like Yoda the pirate aeroship captain day”:

“Arrr me hearties, your captain, this be speaking, soon be landing on the shore, drop off the landlubbers we will”.

Surely we will drive Mike Welsh mad!

  • 14. John B1_B5  |  September 25th, 2006 at 3:01 pm

Yes, I don’t think Mike takes too kindly to those “Talk like a …. days”.

Here’s another example of “Talk like a Pilot ” —

CX4 to Control, CX4 to Control.
Standby, this is Hop Harrigan coming in !

  • 15. John B1_B5  |  September 25th, 2006 at 6:59 pm

    CRASHHH ! ! ! !
You halfwit Harrigan ! You landed right on top of the control tower !

  • 16. Loki  |  September 27th, 2006 at 1:19 am

Yes, a lot of very odd banter!

  • 17. John B1_B5  |  September 27th, 2006 at 2:00 pm

There’s an interesting “bollocks” advert being played on 2CC at the moment .

    Think I’ll give it a try –

Canberra Festival of One Act Plays ……. BOLLOCKS !
2007 Canberra International Film Festival .. BOLLOCKS !
Pacific Islands Showcase ……………………. BOLLOCKS !
    Conflux – a science fiction conference. …. BOLLOCKS !
The Lake Tuggeranong Celtic Moon Festival … BOLLOCKS !
    John Stanhope ……………………………………….. BOLLOCKS !

  • 18. Loki  |  September 27th, 2006 at 5:27 pm

Is that what the “Bs” in “B1-B5” stand for?

  • 19. John B1_B5  |  September 27th, 2006 at 9:21 pm

No, the B is for Barnes, but I usually don’t use my full name . — John Barnes.

  • 20. Samuel  |  September 27th, 2006 at 9:35 pm

I thought that was an alias…

  • 21. John B1_B5  |  September 27th, 2006 at 10:49 pm

That was one name in a list of possible ‘nicknames’ , which may or may not contain my real name.
The fact is, I told Mike Welsh my name is John Barnes, after he incorrectly referred to me as “John Brock” on The Drive Show this afternoon.

  • 22. Samuel  |  September 27th, 2006 at 11:13 pm

Ahhh, now it makes sense Mr. Barnes…and I missed you call to Mike Welsh, but that happens when I’m at work.

  • 23. John B1_B5  |  September 27th, 2006 at 11:33 pm

    No problem.
I actually called Welshy to tell him about the retread flying off my tyre along Athllon Drive, and how I could have easily ended up like Peter Brock after I lost control of the vehicle for a short period and ran off the road . Luckily there were no trees planted on the nature strip.
The outcome of the conversation was that nobody was sure whether retreads were illegal, but based on today’s events, I think they should be.
Pictures of the ‘remains’ of the retread can be seen here –

  • 24. Samuel  |  September 27th, 2006 at 11:57 pm

To the best of my knowledge retreads are legal…in fact I believe that ACTION Busses use them for some of their tyres…from memory they have a careful balance between new tyres and retreads.

I suppose you were a bit shaken by the experience John, I hope you’re OK now.

  • 25. John B1_B5  |  September 28th, 2006 at 4:09 am

More annoyed than shaken Samuel. I had no idea that the car I purchased had 2 retread tyres on the back.
I rang one of the Bridgestone tyre outlets, and was told that Bridgestone had nothing to do with retreads, and would not supply them. In fact, the man I spoke to, said that he had once helped remove a woman’s body from the wreck of a car that had crashed as the result of a retread ‘ throwing’ its tread.

Australian standard AS 1973 – 1993, states that a retread tyre must carry some form of marking on the side of the casing to indicate that the tyre has been retreaded, so I’ll be checking out all the markings on the side of the tyre to see whether it complies with the standard, even if it involves sending the tyre off to a laboratory for analysis !

Also, while developments in passenger car tyre manufacturing technology have resulted in improvements in the life of tyres, the life of the casing appears to have followed the opposite trend, with evidence suggesting casing life is decreasing.
Industry representatives have suggested that ‘cheap’ imported tyres are not generally suitable for retreading. It should also be noted that, increasingly, some locally produced tyres have also been identified as totally unsuitable for retreading.

  • 26. Samuel  |  September 28th, 2006 at 10:44 am

I think it’s fairly safe to say that if a major, respected, tyre outlet such as Bridgestone refuse to have anything to do with retreads, despite the obvious financial incentive for them to do so, there must be something seriously wrong with retreads.

Perhaps one of the commenters on your blog is right John, perhaps we should ban them.

  • 27. Loki  |  September 28th, 2006 at 12:51 pm

John, have you ever thought of adding “John Bollocks” to your extensive list of on-air nom de plumes? I think it would come in handy for any tongue in cheek calls!
