Back in the old country, there are numerous superstititions about magpies, and many people salute them or show extreme displays of courtesy towards them for fear of angering some invisilbe magpie spirit. Of course, these magpies are a completely different bird to the Australian magpies, who get their name purely because they look a lot like British magpies, which don't, I think, swoop on people, but are rather known for their procilivity for stealing shiny objects.
