Updated Aircheck

Some of you may recall that in September last year, I put my aircheck online [1], which was a news bulletin from August 27, 2005.

I was quite surprised to find that it was the third most downloaded file in April, and upon having a listen to it again (and having a bit of a chuckle at the same time) I have decided that it is time to update it.

I have now placed one of my news bulletins online from Saturday April 22, 2006, which can be heard by clicking here [2].

While you’re at it, have another listen to the one from August last year [3], compare them, and see just how far I’ve come since then. I’m sure you will agree that there has been quite a bit of improvement.

While I’m talking about this, I would like to thank Artie Stevens, owner, operator and news director of Australian Independent Radio News [4], who has not only given me the opportunity to improve, but given me plenty of help along the way. I couldn’t have done it without you Artie.

(I think it’s blatantly obvious to anybody who listens to either of those audio files…but once again…Disclosure Notice: Samuel has a commercial agreement with Australian Independent Radio News).

Samuel

I like the August one better because you’re not talking as FAST as you are in the other one . ( just MY opinion ) . John B1_B5.

#2 Comment By Samuel On May 3, 2006 @ 10:04 am

You would have to agree that the August one was almost monotone though, whilst the April one has a natural vocal range.

#3 Comment By John B1_B5 On May 3, 2006 @ 10:37 am

Yeah but ….. I prefer the slower speed . ( If you speak too fast you run the risk of outdoing our ‘mutual friend’ Rebecca Bowman .

#4 Comment By cunninglinguist On May 3, 2006 @ 12:15 pm

A little fast, Samuel. And there is a mild nasally tone to both airchecks, with occasionally too much emphasis on the last syllable of the last word of a sentence.

“Newcastle” is New-car-sul, not New-cass-ul.

Otherwise, not bad.

Have you dropped Stewart from Gordon-Stewart from your news bulletin online from Saturday April 22 2006?

I must say this caught me on the back foot. I am not sure if it has the same ring to it as SGS.

#6 Comment By wonko the sane On May 3, 2006 @ 9:20 pm

It threw me off too. ‘I’m Samuel Gordon… ‘

#7 Comment By Samuel On May 3, 2006 @ 10:44 pm

It’s been like that for a few months, some stations find the three word name a tad long. It works for me.

#8 Comment By wonko the sane On May 4, 2006 @ 12:20 am

So it was intentional then? Wow… what made you opt for Gordon instead of Stewart?

Or, for that matter, Gordon Gordon? ‘Good morning, I’m Gordon Gordon.’ I like it.

Or, ‘Good evening, listeners, this is Stewart Samuel coming to you live…’ Not bad.

Stewart Gordon also has potential. Samuel Samuel… nah. For mine, Gordon Gordon has the snappiest ring to it, a kind of debonair authority. Like at any moment you could sling a bag of clubs into the two-seater and join the chaps from the Club at St Andrews for a round or two.

#9 Comment By Chuck A. Spear On May 4, 2006 @ 12:22 am

Anyone would think that you are broadcasting in China.

This agression will not stand man!

#10 Comment By Chuck A. Spear On May 4, 2006 @ 12:28 am

As a fan of SGS. I would also like to know why Samuel opted for Gordon instead of Stewart.

I don’t think I can deal with the name change. I hope it does not extend to the next Persiflage.

It’s kind of like cats and dogs living together peacefully. Just to weird…

#11 Comment By Samuel On May 4, 2006 @ 12:30 am

Tony Martin and Mick Molloy did a humourous spoof of an AM talkback radio program with the fictional characters “Gordon Gordon” and “Neil O’Neil”. I think both names lost all credibility after that.

#12 Comment By wonko the sane On May 4, 2006 @ 12:32 am

That’s not the preferred nomencleture… Asian American, please.

#13 Comment By Samuel On May 4, 2006 @ 12:36 am

I think “Samuel Gordon” sounds better than “Samuel Stewart”, and no it will not extend to the next Persiflage…in fact it has been going for many months will the Persiflage quite blissfully oblivious to it all.

#14 Comment By Chuck A. Spear On May 4, 2006 @ 12:42 am

I think if Samuel ever moves to Venice he should go door to door stating his new name and occupation.

Did you take this up with Australian Independent Radio News management. I think you have a case for discrimination. $$$

#15 Comment By Chuck A. Spear On May 4, 2006 @ 12:43 am

Oh and when you get the twenty grand, make sure you get to keep the rug.

#16 Comment By Samuel On May 4, 2006 @ 12:44 am

I’m actually quite happy with the decision, which was in fact left up to me, no discrimination whatsoever.

#17 Comment By heatseeker On May 4, 2006 @ 12:48 am

I think you should call yourself “Gordon Samuel” next week … there are finite combinations – do you have a middle name?

#18 Comment By Chuck A. Spear On May 4, 2006 @ 12:49 am

Are there any other Samuel Gordons around the AM traps. I just think that you could be confused with someone else with lesser ability than you. Samuel Gordon-Stewart is unique and striking.

#19 Comment By heatseeker On May 4, 2006 @ 12:51 am

How about you just use the Favicon symbol … as in “the artist formerly known as”? That said, the visual would be hard to translate to the aural medium.

#20 Comment By Chuck A. Spear On May 4, 2006 @ 12:52 am

What about a trifecta of Gordons. Gordon Gordon Gordon.
You could always shunt Thomas if necessary as I hear these announcers are a fickle lot.

#21 Comment By heatseeker On May 4, 2006 @ 12:53 am

How about Stewart Gordon-Samuel?

#22 Comment By Chuck A. Spear On May 4, 2006 @ 12:54 am

Yeah use the Favicon and become a Jehova’s Witness. You could easily distribute the Watchtower mag on your long walks with Nattie.

#23 Comment By heatseeker On May 4, 2006 @ 12:55 am

If you took up the symbol optio, you could adopt a momentary pause in your intro and then let the listener’s imaginations run wild.

You could be the high plains drifter of the airwaves – the man with no name …

#24 Comment By Chuck A. Spear On May 4, 2006 @ 12:56 am

Damn favicon keeps freaking me out.

#25 Comment By heatseeker On May 4, 2006 @ 12:59 am

Maybe just adopt a mysterious moniker .. something like the Pineapple Piece if you’re sydicated in Queensland, or perhaps “The Big Rock” if you’re taking up a more confrontational editorial stance.

Perhaps you could broadcast in a Favicon mask – WWF style.

#26 Comment By Chuck A. Spear On May 4, 2006 @ 1:00 am

Samuel could direct the listener to draw a circle punctuated with two eyes and a strange mouth. He could then direct the listener to colour it in with a green crayon.

Just like David Berkowitz (SOS), took directions from the dog next door, the listener could take directions from the spooky favicon.

#27 Comment By heatseeker On May 4, 2006 @ 1:01 am

How about “Leumas” … inspired by the phenomenon that is Dolgnwot, and the chicks would love the mysterious, generally swarthy, persona.

#28 Comment By Chuck A. Spear On May 4, 2006 @ 1:02 am

I think we may have stumbled onto another mystery that needs explaination. Summer of Sam (SOS), Samuel Gordon Stewart (SGS).

I do rather like heatseekers idea of a WWF mask.

#29 Comment By heatseeker On May 4, 2006 @ 1:03 am

Perhaps John B1-B5 could weave his magic to correct the acoustics …

#30 Comment By Chuck A. Spear On May 4, 2006 @ 1:05 am

‘Leumas’ smacks of some middle eastern satantic idol worship. I am getting quite freaked out by all of this. I am in witness protection but that won’t stop the evil darkness from finding me and snuffing me out because I know too much…

#31 Comment By Samuel On May 4, 2006 @ 1:06 am

Heatseeker, I do have a middle name, it is John.

And for the record, I am sticking with Samuel Gordon in the news bulletins. All of your advice is appreciated, even if some of it won’t be used.

#32 Comment By Chuck A. Spear On May 4, 2006 @ 1:06 am

There is no B&G foil in Moe only No-Frills. I do hope it has the same affect.

#33 Comment By heatseeker On May 4, 2006 @ 1:07 am

So, which parts are you going to use … the Favicon mask?

#34 Comment By Chuck A. Spear On May 4, 2006 @ 1:08 am

Samuel John Gordon-Stewart walked into a bar…

#35 Comment By heatseeker On May 4, 2006 @ 1:09 am

Damn it Chuck … you’re supposed to be in a SECRET location … or is this Moe thing just a clever ruse?

#36 Comment By heatseeker On May 4, 2006 @ 1:10 am

Spooky, Samuel, you and I share the same middle name …

#37 Comment By Chuck A. Spear On May 4, 2006 @ 1:12 am

It was Moe but because of my own stupidity I have been moved. My true location can’t be disclosed. The insurance mob who has insured my arms for a handsome figure has moved me to a more secretive location.

#38 Comment By Chuck A. Spear On May 4, 2006 @ 1:13 am

Damn it heatseeker, now you know your own middle name. You will be able to impersonate yourself at will from now on.

#39 Comment By Chuck A. Spear On May 4, 2006 @ 1:15 am

I think you should grab one of those Favicon WWF masks heatseeker. It may help stop the death threats.

#40 Comment By heatseeker On May 4, 2006 @ 1:17 am

I think that if Samuel adopted “The Pineapple Piece”, Alan Jones would respond to the inevitable ratings war by referring to himself simply as “The Fruit”.

#41 Comment By Chuck A. Spear On May 4, 2006 @ 1:18 am

I think that Alan is used to seeing the wrong end of a pineapple.

#42 Comment By Chuck A. Spear On May 4, 2006 @ 1:20 am

Now the defamation laws have changed it is ok to call Alan a fag now because I am just stating a fact. Also, I heard that he buys pineapple by the dozen, and they are not for eating…

He’s gonna cut off your johnson man.

This is some funny sh*t.

#44 Comment By Chuck A. Spear On May 4, 2006 @ 4:50 am

and stomp on it and squish it!

#45 Comment By wonko the sane On May 4, 2006 @ 7:24 pm

What do you need your Johnson for, dude?
