Bigpond block emails from Gmail

February 22nd, 2006 at 01:39am

Well, this is just fantastic, Telstra Bigpond are now blocking emails from Gmail, which means that a lot of the people I regularly communicate with are now out of reach by email. I tried contacting Bigpond via their online question form, but you have to be a bigpond member to do that, so I’m just going to have to make up some information and send it that way. They claim to try and respond to emails in one working day, so they can have 24 hours to answer my question, and if they don’t, they can get a phone call instead.

I would really love to know why they have blocked emails from Gmail, I wonder if they’ve done the same to Hotmail and Yahoo Mail…maybe to Yahoo Mail, but Telstra love Microsoft so they would be unlikely to block Hotmail.

Anyway, the email I have sent to Bigpond via their online form

Hi,
I’m not a Bigpond customer, but I can only send you feedback with this form if I tell it that I am.

I use Gmail for my email, and have recently started having issues sending emails to people using Bigpond. It would appear that your email servers are setup to block email originating from the Gmail servers. All the emails are bouncing with the following error:

TEMP_FAILURE: SMTP Error (state 8): 451 Mail from this IP address blocked due to DNS block list.

Is there any reason why Gmail’s servers are not allowed to send email to bigpond users? This has really stifled communications with a number of my regular contacts.

Regards,
Samuel Gordon-Stewart

Will they reply? Only time will tell, but I suspect that they won’t.

For those of you who use Bigpond and have been expecting emails from me, sorry but I just can’t send them at the moment, the Gmail servers will keep attempting to send them on my behalf for a couple days. As far as I can tell this does not affect email coming directly from samuelgordonstewart.com, so registration emails shouldn’t be a problem, but all of my email forwards to Gmail as I prefer Gmail over other webmail services, so don’t expect a reply if you’re using Bigpond and you send me an email.

Samuel

Yeah thanks Sol Trujillo. I think Tel$tra is going down the toilet.

Hmmmm ….. I wonder why they have done that ? Maybe they have a reason for it .
As far as Hotmail goes, I still receive normal Hotmail emails in my Outlook Express ( which is basically a ‘shuttle service’ between my computer and my on-line provider who happen to be Big Pond ) .

However… “having said that ” ….. I AM having trouble getting Messages off the MSN Message Boards via Outlook Express. Only about 5% of messages are now coming through to my Outlook Express, whereas a year ago, ALL messages used to come through, and they’re usually days late !
It’s much easier to go to the site and read the messages on the Board, rather than depend on email messages . There appears to be some sort of “cross connection” problem between MSN ( which is basically Hotmail ) and Bigpond .

I just can’t rely on messages from Message Boards arriving in my Outlook Express anymore.

Oh, by the way …. that “ilead.itrack” popup is back again !

Seems somebody else is having a similar problem —–

    Webstat (Netstat) Basic Tracker, http://ilead.itrack.it
I have just recently discovered an occasional pop-up associated with my blogpages, after googling the pop-up URL, ilead.itrack.it, and reading several forums, it turned out to be my long-used website counter. Since I have used their service for quite a long time and I have been so far satisfied, I will not remove the Javascript code from my template now, but if gets more frequent and annoying I will have to say goodbye to Webstats4u basic.

I found that posted on a Blogsite .

I can’t explain any reoccurence of the popups, as they are happening to me, and the offending code has been removed. I did stumble upon it on the National Library’s archive as they’ve also archived the offending code.

By the way, the blog entry John is referring to can be found at http://dentin.blogspot.com/2005/12/webstat-netstat-basic-tracker.html

Anyway, back on topic, and I can’t figure out why Bigpond would block Gmail, it’s ruined my chances of arranging a lunch meeting with my bus driver friend, killed my reply to John B1_B5’s email with the audio feedback for Samuel’s Persiflage, and is likely to cause more trouble down the line. I will continue to receive “status updates” on those emails for the next 24-48 hours until Gmail finally stops trying to send them, and I will be very annoyed if I finally receive “message failed, we aren’t trying again” on any of the pending emails.

If Bigpond have done it due to spam, then they are morons, Gmail has it’s own limits on how many emails anyone can send in the space of 24 hours, and most spam “from” a gmail address is really from an SMTP server on the computer of someone infected with malware, blocking Gmail’s servers achieves nothing other than annoying people.

Mind you, it is the kind of thing I would expect from Sol Trujillo and “The Burrito Brothers”.

So did you get my audio recording Samuel ?

  • 7. Samuel  |  February 22nd, 2006 at 11:13 am

Yep, I got it John, just can’t reply!

Anyway, what I wanted to ask you in the email is, what did you use to record it?

A very basic 8 bit mono Windows Sound Recorder Samuel .. I know it’s a bit noisy, but it sounds ok over the air, because Mike Welch played something I sent him once, recorded on the same device, and there was no sign of noise in the background .

I haven’t tried emailing bigpond accounts from my gmail account lately, but I had this same problem about six months or so ago when I did. Bigpond users get what they deserve though, IMO.

Could it possibly be that cloning cult the Raelians up to their old tricks.? Or have they finally succeeded in cloning the first ‘perfect’ human?

I did not know that Samuel has one a beauty contest. Fascinating.
