It’s a funny old day on 2CC and 2CA

Today has been rather interesting on 2CC and 2CA.

Firstly I was awake briefly at 6am and noticed the news was not introduced with “I’m … with Capital Radio Network News”, instead being introduced with “I’m … with 2CC News”. At this time I thought this might just be 2CA not taking the 6am news, or perhaps 2CA taking Sydney news, and then I thought about their recent listener feedback survey which was designed to help them improve the station, and suddenly thought that they might have dumped the news altogether. I was tired though and decided to worry about that later and went back to bed…more on that later.

9am rolled around and I heard Lawsie make his triumphant return to the airwaves, where he instantly asked the audience if they still want him to start the show with his snippet of useless information. I sent him an email about this which follows:

Hi Lawsie,
Welcome back, it’s great to hear you on the wireless again. I sent you a Christmas card late last year (it probably arrived just after you left), I hope it got to you safely.

Please don’t take away my daily dose of useless information, you’d be amazed how much easier life is when I hear a piece of trivial information in the morning which reminds me that there is still plenty to laugh about in this world. Sure, I’ll probably forget what the useless information was by midday, but at least it makes me happy in the morning!

By the way Lawsie, it’s now the Chinese year of the dog, so Nattie, my lovely little Jack Russell Terrier, says “woof” to you.

Have a great day,

Samuel Gordon-Stewart
Canberra

Lawsie sounded a bit gruff this morning, but that is probably to be expected from someone who has just returned from eight weeks holidays.

Around 1pm I was walking down to civic with my radio to get some lunch, and had a bit of trouble with the 2CC signal, so I flicked across to 2CA who would be running the news, only to find that they were finishing the weather and running an ad (at least, I think they were finishing the weather), so I flicked back to 2CC and rotated the radio which made the signal clearer.

I decided to investigate this at 2pm, and started monitoring both stations sumultaneously at 1:55, 2CA were in the middle of an outside broadcast from (I think) The Hellenic Club with a DJ that I don’t recognise, possibly confirming last year’s rumors that Brian James was leaving 2CA. There were a couple promos from the new female voiceover person, which reminded me of the local commercial FM stations, which were followed by her introducing the news at 1:58. This was from the 2CC/2CA newsroom, but was branded 2CA news, had a different sport intro which included the newsreader reading the sponsor message, and concluded with the newsreader reading the weather (new ground for 2CA who used to have the DJ read the weather) and fading into the next song on “the new sound of 2CA” or something to that effect.

At this stage 2CC were half way through their news with the same newsreader, which leads me to believe that 2CA news is prerecorded, probably at 10 minutes to the hour. This would easily enable the 2CA panel operator to choose an appropriate point for the song to appear under the newsreader. I must say that the few minutes of 2CA that I heard sounded pretty good, I haven’t really spent long enough listening to decide whether I like the music lineup, and I really do dislike news which isn’t on the hour (it’s a pet peeve, it drives me up the wall as I am used to news on the hour and often work out the time based on it), however flexible news does make music programming much easier to manage as you don’t have to deal with precise timeouts and the difficulties associated with it.

In related news, Mike Welsh is on holidays for two weeks, with Mike Frame filling in this week, and a “Pete” being eluded to as the fill-in host next week. I suppose this could be occasional traffic reporter Pete Lusted, or perhaps Peter Cochrane who filled in for Welshy at one stage last year. Of course, it could be a Pete that I have completely forgotten or don’t know about, but I would be willing to put my money on Peter Cochrane.

I suspect Lawsie may have been gruff because his enemies at the Australian Broadcasting Authority have found ‘evidence’ that Lawslie’s gold microphone is actually made with gold extracted from the teeth of WW2 victims.

While I find such allegations unfounded and downright liable i think they ruffled Lawslies feathers somewhat.

With all the 2CCs , 2UEs and 2CA’s being bandied about, my wig has completely flipped and landed on a slight tilt. Now I understand why heatseekers mind was spinning with all the ‘Gibsons’

Does anyone know where Lawsie went for his eight week holiday?

Perhaps it was the Gold Coast where his alleged ill-gotten gold paled in comparison to the glitter of our illustrious northern hot spot.

Maybe it was to Dolgwot? Where he emailed Samuel everyday with a synopsis for ‘Samuels Adventures in Dolgwot’

I like jam tarts. Especially fresh ones reputable bakeries – not the kind of ones that sell out of shape donuts. I’m not saying that I want to eat you or anything I just think they taste nice with a coffee.

Sorry I left out in ‘n’ in Dolgnwot. It is an inredibly hard place to spell backwards.

#7 Comment By Chuck Berry On January 30, 2006 @ 9:41 pm

I hope that eating you comment does not get me in trouble Jam Tart. As I did get into quite a lot of trouble under similar circumstances when I was in cubs and was kicked out.

#8 Comment By jam tart On January 30, 2006 @ 9:47 pm

I don’t take issue with your comment, Chuck. In all honesty I feel the jam tart is the most underrated of all the baked goods, a sticky sweet delicacy that I fear is now only found on the tea tables of our grandmothers. It’s good to know you have discovered a bakery that still sells them.

Do they sell jam tarts in Dolgnwot?

#9 Comment By Chuck Berry On January 30, 2006 @ 9:55 pm

Thank you Jam Tart. Because I ate all the brownies while I was in cubs and got kicked out I thought I may get moderated and my eating you out comment taken the wrong way.

I am not sure If they sell them in Dolgnwot. We will have to wait and see. I wonder if Nattie likes jam tarts.

What do you think about John Kerr moving from nights?

#10 Comment By jam tart On January 30, 2006 @ 10:13 pm

I don’t really have an opinion on John Kerr’s movements but I wonder if you could perhaps write a song about it as you express yourself best through song. You never know, Samuel may include it on his Persiflage…

#11 Comment By Chuck Berry On January 30, 2006 @ 10:23 pm

Hmm… I suppose I could. My fingering is not as good as used to be though my wife says. I put it down to my arthritic joints. Maybe I could knock some music and lyrics up and run them by Samuel.

Perhaps a tribute song would be better than a float at the big parade. I don’t approve of parades as one has to watch them as opposed to listening to them on AM radio. Maybe heatseeker could help with some lyrics?

#12 Comment By Chuck Berry On January 30, 2006 @ 11:45 pm

Man there sure are a lot of Mics and Petes too. I would go with Samuels guess and put my money on Petes Coch…
I think I know them well enough by now to use their knicknames.

#13 Comment By Chuck Berry On January 30, 2006 @ 11:50 pm

Sorry I meant Pete Coch and nickname

Frankly, I don’t know if “Dolgnwot” could be pronounced on air, and a Wikpedia search reveals nothing as to its origins.

As to Lawsie’s golden micophone, I remember a few years back that Packer’s Park St Sydney office was raided and, among other things, a pistol and a cool $6 million in gold bars was snatched.

Now Lawsie told me he regularly carries a gun to protect himself from deranged fans and a certain talkback and e-mail stalker in particular, but I do wonder if he had his microphone dipped in Kerry’s molten gold to taunt the media magnate.

I’ve never been a media superstar but when you are the most powerful man in radio, or indeed an award-winning blogger with Satanic leanings, it must be a temptation to flaunt your power with some ostentatious mischief making.

I’m sure I saw a toilet block very similar to the one in which Alan Jones was accused of acting in a “colourful manner” referred to in one of Samuel’s earlier Dolgnwot art works … I wonder if he’s conducting a subtle Lawsie style golden microphone type campaign against his idol’s on-air nemesis.

There is much more to Samuel than meets the eye, which make anal-ysis of this blog all the more fascinating!

Hey Everyone. My name is T-bone.

Anyway, I am lucky enough to work at 2CC and 2CA, and I do hope you enjoy what your listening on 2CA with the New Sound of 1053 2CA.

Anyway, I would just like to say I hope you are enjoying the changes to the stations, and sure I have only been at the station for 6 weeks now, but it’s a big change compared to what was said before. Ie: I’m James Cregan for Capital Radio Network News, to I’m James Cregan for 2CC news. I am sure i’ll get used to it, but it is really annoying, and a hell of a big change.

Anyway, when listening to Lawsie Tomorrow, along with Saturday and Sunday Morning’s Programs, you’ll be able to think “Thats T-bone”.

Welcome on board T-Bone – something for everyone here. I’m sure Samul will give you a more formal welcome as the blog owner in god time!

#17 Comment By Chuck Berry On January 31, 2006 @ 9:57 pm

You are definately onto something there heatseeker subliminal and satanic…

We will have to wait until Dolgnwot returns. The true origin of the gold mic may be revealed in the second ‘back by popular demand’ series.

It takes me about half an hour to type Dolgnwot as I keep having to refer to it being typed correctly elsewhere. I may have to put it on a post it note.

Hello T-bone. Hopefully you can help decipher all the 2CAs and 2CCs that keep appearing.

#18 Comment By jam tart On January 31, 2006 @ 9:59 pm

I’m wondering if there’s some hidden meaning in heatseeker’s last post: “Samul” and “god time” smack of some serious middle eastern false idol worship…

Thanks for the Welcome.

If you have any questions about anything (and aslong as it does not breach my working conditions) I will endevour to answer any questions.

Hi T-bone, I remember the confidentiality agreement from the week I did work experience at 2CC/2CA. That was a fun week, but just like you, I can’t divulge things that happened.

Thanks for correcting my spelling of James Cregan’s name!

I come back after few days off wow all the comments

#22 Comment By T-bone On January 31, 2006 @ 10:58 pm

I know exactly what you mean Samuel.

But yeah, if you have some general questions to ask, I can try my best, but if I think It is taking it too far, I will simply not answer it, as everyone needs their privacy.

#23 Comment By Chuck Berry On January 31, 2006 @ 11:21 pm

‘needs their privacy’ is an understatement on this site!

#24 Comment By T-bone On February 1, 2006 @ 12:11 am

Yeah I know what you mean, but you see. The station would have ways of finding out what I am saying on here.

And they know who T-bone is…

#25 Comment By Samuel On February 1, 2006 @ 12:20 am

I don’t want anyone to get in trouble for posting stuff here, so if you’re not comfortable answering a question, don’t answer. And if you’re asking a question, try to take the other person’s obligations into account.

Virtually every employer has some sort of confidentiality agreement, so asking for details about inside information is a big no-no.

If someone is annoyed with someone else asking questions, notify me and I’ll try and sort it out.

Hello everybody, I hope the weather is pleasant in canberra. I live in Japan! We don’t have very much talk-back radio in Japan, but since I have read Samuel’s site I really want to listen to some.

I have a question: has anybody ever seen John Laws and Samuel in the same room at the same time?

Samuel, are you really John Laws, and when the world is at peril from the evils of the internet, computer games, drugs and so forth, you find a phonebox and change into Captain Samuel and draw crayon drawings and do persiflages and such? And then put them on the internet so the cynical and drug-addicted and can see them and be charmed and changed?

Also, have you ever read a book called That About Wraps It Up For God?

Thank you very much for your site, Samuel (if that is your real name). It brings a light into my day, every day. My favourite sections are the step meter, the coffee meter and the bits about your day.

Love,

Wonko.

Obviously T-bone is another operative checking in for more coded instructions … it is indeed perturbing that we get this flurry of activity on this site with Samuel and T-bone communicating in their “confidentiality agreement” code, and then all of a sudden it’s announced that Australia is withdrawing troops from Iraq and sending them all to Afghanistan.

The parallels are eerie, and almost certainly not coincidence!

Oh, I thought John Laws was really Dr Who. Curiouser and curiouser!
